Rather arrogant of Ray Scott to say the Packers were going to be world champions when they hadn't yet played the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl II yet.
Your right about the Ray Scott comment.Back then the AFL was looked upon as such a joke that the Superbowl was considered an after thought.I guess Scott saw it as a given that by winning the NFL Championship the Packers where already world champions......after all what possible threat could the AFL Raiders pose.
That's not Ray Scott. It's the Packers' radio announcer (I think his name was Tom Moore). Scott was doing the game for CBS-TV. He most likely forgot for a moment that there was another game to play after the NFL Championship. Don't forget; the Super Bowl was in its infancy in 1967 and many people still considered it an afterthought or an anticlimax. People didn't begin to take the Super Bowl or the AFL seriously until SB3. The NFL Championship Game was considered "the big one" back then.
The Packers didn't even have a QB sneak play in the playbook. Starr told Lombardi he thought he could take it in himself and Lombardi told him to run it. Starr didn't tell any of the other players what he was planning to do. Had it failed, they wouldn't have had time to run another play. It was the greatest game in NFL history.
It was suppose to be a hand off to Jim Taylor, but Starr takes it himself with Jerry Kramer making one of the best blocks in history. This was during the infamous "Ice Bowl."
Actually, the handoff was to Chuck Mercein (?!?). Taylor and Paul Hornung had been grabbed by New Orleans in that year's expansion draft. That season for the Saints was Taylor's last (Hornung never played for N.O.)
Yah you are right, and didn't the Packers grab Chuck Mercen from the New York Giants? And Pual Hornung had torn his ACL when he played for the Saints right? I must have got my packers history all messed up.
Are you sure Mercen didn't play for the Giants? I remember it on America's game and the Giants didn't want him no more so he had to go play for a Semi Pro team.
I remembered reading somewhere that Lombardi grabbed him from the Redskin waiver wire, but he may have been with the Giants before winding up at said semi-pro team.
You would never think that a QB sneak would win one of the greatest games in NFL History, there were many brave men dealing with that kind of cold on that day.
Only U.S. teams compete because they are already the top teams in the world. Sure, put a French teams together and all they would do is retreat and rely on the U.S.
Bob Lilly looked like a fag trying to kick the ice away? What a moronic statement! What did you want him to do, get a snow blower? No, that would be New England in 1982.
The Super existed back then....they played in Super Bowl II two weeks later not the following week. The Ice Bowl was on December 31, 1967; Super Bowl II was on January 14, 1968.
The reason Mercein put his hands up was'nt to signal touchdown , as it appears. He himself said, he did it to show the officials that he wasn't pushing, or aiding, Starr into the enzone.
I know it's illegal (even today ), but I've never seen it flagged.
I don't really remember as I don't watch football all that much, but I do trust in what your saying.
As I understand it that rule is still in effect, but you see people pushing and pulling their teamates with the ball, into the endzone or for extra yardage. Flagarantly done, but never do i see a flag thrown.
This was the end of the greatest drive I ever saw. It was -15 at the start of the game. Yeah, it was one yard and I'm sure you do it all the time sitting on your coach drinking a beer.
Replay overturned Roethlisberger TD last year. Get your facts straight man.

The Packers were way better than Oakland anyways, and proved it by beating them 33-14.

He corrected himself by saying, "world champions, NFL champions for the third straight year." That was edited out of this recording.
He jumped the gun by stating the Packers beat the Cowboys when there were 13 seconds or so left.

Greatest drive in NFL history, with all due respect to John Elway and Eli Manning.

More pressure was on that play than any other time in the NFL.
The whole Packer/Lombardi legend was riding on it.

Without a doubt, the greatest final drive I ever saw. Remember in those days the QB called the plays. That was all Bart Starr.

I get a kick out of saying "World Champions" when you play a city in your own country.
Packer went on played the "Super Bowl" the next week.
It will truly be world champs when the German League put there champs in the playoffs.
