Our federal needs to take a hands off approach to energy. Stop subsidizing. Stop adding barriers to new players. Once oil became big it started adding laws to protect it against other forms of energy development. Right Newt - 3% of the world's oil reserves exist in the US, yet we consume 25% of the oil-let's open up all three percent, so we can reduce the price of gas by $.05 IN TEN YEARS when the 'drill here' oil comes on line (ask the oil industry themselves-the debate in Congress is about reserves that wouldn't actually produce for TEN YEARS). Energy independence means getting off oil period. Middle east oil will always be cheaper to produce than ours. We've got to make theirs (& ours) worthless.

We consume 25% I agree we reduce oil consumption by 50% through new technology. (the dream that we will soon be oil free is a green dream but will not happen). We increase our production with the 3%. Drilling here and bringing gas prices down is NOT a solution. We need to STOP using oil for transportation and use something else. If gas comes back down in price, there will be NO incentive to get off of oil. Let's start using CNG, Liquid Hydrogen, Electric, Ethanol, Methanol, ANYTHING but oil. It's been 100 years with oil, let's try something new and do it now. No more R&D excuses. Just do it.

Conversely, Somalia is considered Arab yet possesses little oil. A more appropriate term to make your point would be simply: Middle East. Moreover, most Ethopians would take exception to your insult.
