i work in the motor trade actually and fully understand the pros and cons before deciding which clio to buy, i did test drive the 197 and it definatly lacks punch (evo magazine agree) yes its built better than a 182 and yes it has better interior space but i found it lost a lot of its character and the big engine small car feel is non exsistant.

apart from the 182 trophy, the clio 172 cup is the quickest of the bunch. yeah its slightly cheaper, which isnt really a bad thing, but its cheaper because it doesnt have heavy extras like leather seats abs etc. when i used to work at renault the feelings were mutual... the 197 doesnt cut it compared to the mk2s. am thinking maybe its you who needs to get a life, or maybe get laid, as youre response to johnjackson12s comment seems unnecessarily aggressive. youre obviously a twat

For straight line speed the old clio 172 (old shape) has been proven to be faster than a 197 clio. One thing i will agree with is the handling is twice as good in the newer clios compared to the old ones

i have a type r and a friend of mine has a 197 clio. i have raced him 6 times and beaten him all 6
i thought it might have been the fact that i was a better driver then him so we switched cars and he beat me in my own car
