There are no boundaries when it comes to humour but that was totally tasteless. Professional comedians know when not to cross the line. I guess Groupon got their publicity though.
People's negativity towards China's Tibetan policy lasts about as it takes to get to Wal*Mart.
But lets not be pretend that Tibet was a wonderful place before China turned up. The greater populous was treated as slaves by a ruling elite. The Dalai Lama was the ruler of a monotheistic dictatorship.
You know, if you seek an audience with the Dalai Lama, you have to make a donation of $2,000- $3,000. Not to charity... to HIM. There's faith and charity in action.... stick that in your prayer pipe!
@ascolti that "monastic dictatiorship" lie about HH the Dalai Lama was created by the Chinese to get more people on their side. Might i tell you that HH the Dalai Lama was only a CHILD when the Chinese came.

I just can't get over how stupid people are. THIS WAS SATIRE! It was meant to draw attention to our consumerism. Also, the company gives hundreds of thousands of dollars to Tibet's cause. The ad was intended to serve the dual purpose of drawing our attention to important social issues while also giving us an incentive that personally motivates. Did everyone think Dr. Strangelove was serious, too? Is everyone going crazy for The Producers on Broadway because they're in favor of the Nazis?

We all know what is Snow Lion and Panda. We all know China was called a sleeping Lion.

Either way, the snow lion is is a celestial animal of Tibet. Pandas live in eastern Tibet region. Tibet and China have been fully integrated, you can't separate them no matter how hard you try.
Tibetans didn't pay tax to Chinese emperors, such as Kublai, Zhu Yuanzhang, or Kang xi. Instead, Chinese sent tons of gold, silver to Tibet and built Lama temples. Dalai Lama is the legacy of China. No more emperor, but Dalai Lama and Marixsm will continue...
They could have made a better ad without being so controversial, but I personally think they didn't intentionally try to insult Tibetans, it was just a joke. I mean, look at all the ads that portray black people being criminals.
On thing I can guarantee to all of you who think this was a funny add...if you were a Tibetan you would think otherwise. None of you McDonalds eating, Jersey Shore watching brats could even understand the suffering those people have been through. Your opinions are irrelevant, you could at least have the decency to TRY and understand what other people in this world go through before making light of it. As I said earlier, if it were YOUR family,I bet you would have a completely different reaction.
for those who liked this line of advertisement here is a thought: imagine that instead of Tibet situation or brazilian rainforest problem, etc, Groupon makes fun of WTC tragedy. Would be like this: oh jeez... families of WTC disater are in such a bad shape, but you know what? They can still get 50% off in the great afghan restaurants in town! JUST THINK ABOUT IT!! Joke about other people´s problem is not funny at all!
@rodrigombr Exactly...and there were a LOT less people killed on 9/11 than have been murdered and tortured in Tibet. But really, the type of responses I am reading here are nothing knew, I can guarantee 99% of them come from Americans(of which I am one), because our educational funding has been reduced to such abysmal levels, while we endorse the idea of stupefying our own people with such inane forms of entertainment, that many of us just don't have any compassion or understanding anymore.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This would be no different than if the Chrysler Super Bowl Commercial had started off by saying, "Detroit, a crumbling mess of crimes and poverty..." and ending with, "but they make great cars!" If anyone would be offended by that then it would go to show how sheltered of a life he or she lived because in truth, Detroit is not a perfect city. No one should be offended by the truth. Sure, the ad could have been handled more delicately, but then it would have lost its intentional shock value.
@tentative0630 Your analogy is ridiculous. It would be more like the U.S. government taking control of Michigan; harshly limiting Detroit citizens' religious practices & whom they associate with (e.g., no listening to Eminem – a rapper expelled from the entire state); censoring Detroit Free Press (ironic?); arbitrarily ARRESTING, TORTURING, even EXECUTING some of our peaceful Detroit friends (there are some); instituting forced birth control incl. abortions and sterilizations. . . list goes on.
@MaxAck Get your facts straigh The 1-child policy does not apply to the Tibetans or any minorities in China. Chinese rights are limited but the Tibetans-Chinese have more rights than most other Chinese.
"The people of Tibet are in trouble. Their very culture is in jeopardy" juxtaposed with Tibetans' ability to "whip up an amazing fish curry" to satisfy Timothy Hutton's gastronomical conceits.
The only people whose intelligence and sensibilities are NOT offended by this crap are the ad's copywriters, Groupon IPO investors, and idiots. I see all three well represented in these comments.
What's next year? Kebabs & laughing at U.S. complicity in the Palestinians’ plight? Andrew Mason is an IDIOT.
It's hardly worth a reply here other than to say we Americans are a smug, arrogant, materialistic people...I mean as long as they make a good fish curry and we can save a few bucks, who really gives a shit about what's going in Tibet, right?
Ana is just a dumb chick - she needs to just flash the cleavage and shut her mouth. If she found the Groupon ads offensive then she really must be living a cushy life where it is free of any real problems. Comfortable people are desperately looking for things to be upset and offended by.
this is the beautiful country of afghanistan, but its people are in trouble, occupation, poverty, violence, death... but hehey their kids still make cheapest tube socks, and me and my friends got a dozen a dollar at walmart, empire for the win!!!
totally agree with ana, this is desastrous, dont give me your pc-anti-pc bullshit
I've got nothing against making jokes about serious thigs, but what I find to be in poor taste is that they did it in a commercial. Essentially using the hardship of helpless people to sell a product. However, it's their ad, they can do what they want, and in return the viewer can choose whether or not to buy the product.
who cares, who is it going to offend? The people of Tibet... dont think they will ever see this. people just try to find anything to bit*h about and they can get over it.
I don't find this offensive at all... regardless of what you publish, if more than a million people are going to see it, someone is bound to be offended.
When I saw this ad I rolf'd my carpet bare! Little did I know the REAL punchline of the joke wasn't even in it... Sure enough, a small army of active citizens was personally offended by it, thus making them the butt-end of an ingenious publicity act! I really shouldn't jest though; what mind could possibly comprehend the number of tedious hours each of these surely valiant crusaders have spent distributing iodized salt packs to the nutrient-deficient natives, or resettling the Tibetan refugees?
I find this ad mildly confusing because even if you take out it's alleged offensiveness it's not funny. I guess Christopher Guest is loosing it. The good thing is it has sparked interest into the massive human rights abuse taking place in Tibet by China. Write to your Congress representatives or local MPs and tell them that you oppose the human rights abuse taking place in Tibet and wish them to take a peaceful political stand against it.
You people , like, say right and like, like way too much, like you know what I mean...right? Like cmon, ok? right? I mean can you imagine, like, if I actually listened to everything you were saying ...right?...like......ok?
The commercial has no similarity with blood diamonds, Tibetan people are not dying because of fish curry. I honestly think it was a funny commercial. How many of the people that were offended by this video are even from Tibet??? Stop trying to seem like you really care. If someone were to truly care they would help out the people from Tibet.
@jcglezt2k The idea that a person need go to extraordinary means just to prove that they think something is terribly wrong is ridiculous. The atrocities committed against the Tibetan people are equal to any in other areas the US has "intervened" ... the only reason we don't get involved is there is no $ in it for us. This commercial clearly makes light of the suffering of millions of people, and while I don't expect any capitalist interest to know any better, I DO expect more of Timothy Hutton.
@jcglezt2k I respect your opinion and you made a very good point but in my opinion, even though they did not mean to be mean in any way, they still should not make light of something like that, and doing so does not make the commercial funny. I am not saying that they should not put that ad up, but I can see how it can be considered offensive . And about helping the Tibetans, your right we should take action, but there is very little we can do and making an ad like that does not help the cause
Fuck off you astroturfing arsehole. Don't you understand? They are being repressed and slaughtered? This sort of thing trivialises their suffering and makes light of the fact that they are being killed and in fact exploits it for commercial gains, do you think there isn't an ethical question here or does trying to gloss over that pay too well?
the beginning of the video served to catch the attention of viewers, a method that every person making a commercial would use. there is no reason for anyone to get offended.. south park makes more 'offensive' jokes then this. there are more important things to worry about.
end of story, this commercial is funny. just like south park.
@ohhellotherek Your right, but south park informs you that the jokes you will encounter are offensive from the get-go. Here theres no such disclaimers to inform the audience or even to tell that it was a joke. I mean the guy doesn't go on or off character like you would see on similar joke ads. All in all I think it should take heat more for being a bad commercial more than being offensive. I mean the actor was just plain LOUSY!
@ohhellotherek First off, while it may be acceptable in our society, which has incredibly low moral standards, to find it clever or enterprising to purposefully practice deceit on members of the same society for profit, that doesn't make it right.South Park's humor, while at times offensive, almost always pokes fun at the ignorance and greed in the world, rather than adding to it. And I bet you wouldn't think there were more important things to worry about if your family were the ones suffering.
I can't see how anyone can mistake this for anything but incredibly insulting. The ad starts out by stating that the people of Tibet are in trouble...their CULTURE is in jeopardy...and then goes on to mock the situation by basically saying "who cares, as long as Groupon enables us to get Tibetan cuisine for cheap har har!" Well, you think their food is good, but who cares if Tibetan families are being murdered right? Let's see how long we can exploit everything around us until it's gone.
@Cancrizans but Tibetan families are not being murdered. In a country where most people have limited civil right, the Tibetan minorities have more rights than everyone else.
@supersport396 except it didn't really work. I heard today that a bunch of people were boycotting the company and they were forced to end the ad campaign. all 3 of the commercials are being taken off the air. the company considers it a failure
I loved this commercial. It's too bad they're pulling it now because all of you LAME MOFOS can't take a joke. However, y'all made it ten times funnier by reacting the way that you did. It's kind of like when people get bent out of shape over a South Park episode. It always makes it that much funnier that someone was actually peeved by it. XD
Oh my god, boo-bloody-hoo. People are so sensitive! You people don't really care about the people of Tibet, you're just looking for something to gasp at and pretend you're taking offense over. For goodness sake, get a grip. It's a commercial and it was funny. Take a joke for once in your sad life. Jeez, South Park has been on the air for years, you'd think you'd be used to that kind of "let's take this too far" humor.
i found it funny because i'm a bad person but it was offensive because it's a current conflict (also inaccurate with the food :/). It's like making fun of the riots in Egypt currently. Just in bad taste. o well. wont stop people from using grouppon. Good concept by execution.
People don't know anything about Tibet. That's why it's okay to laugh at. They were making fun of those Christian donation commercials you see to feed the hungry. But if they used Ethiopians or something, people would say it's too much. No one knows shit about Tibet so it was safer. In a commercial humor kind of way. It was still a stupid commercial though.

They could have made a better ad without being so controversial, but I personally think they didn't intentionally try to insult Tibetans, it was just a joke. I mean, look at all the ads that portray black people being criminals.

ohhellotherek 1 year ago

Joke about other people´s problem is not funny at all!
rodrigombr 1 year ago 10
@rodrigombr Exactly...and there were a LOT less people killed on 9/11 than have been murdered and tortured in Tibet. But really, the type of responses I am reading here are nothing knew, I can guarantee 99% of them come from Americans(of which I am one), because our educational funding has been reduced to such abysmal levels, while we endorse the idea of stupefying our own people with such inane forms of entertainment, that many of us just don't have any compassion or understanding anymore.

Sure, the ad could have been handled more delicately, but then it would have lost its intentional shock value.
tentative0630 1 year ago
@tentative0630 Your analogy is ridiculous. It would be more like the U.S. government taking control of Michigan; harshly limiting Detroit citizens' religious practices & whom they associate with (e.g., no listening to Eminem – a rapper expelled from the entire state); censoring Detroit Free Press (ironic?); arbitrarily ARRESTING, TORTURING, even EXECUTING some of our peaceful Detroit friends (there are some); instituting forced birth control incl. abortions and sterilizations. . . list goes on.

I've got nothing against making jokes about serious thigs, but what I find to be in poor taste is that they did it in a commercial. Essentially using the hardship of helpless people to sell a product. However, it's their ad, they can do what they want, and in return the viewer can choose whether or not to buy the product.

The commercial has no similarity with blood diamonds, Tibetan people are not dying because of fish curry. I honestly think it was a funny commercial. How many of the people that were offended by this video are even from Tibet??? Stop trying to seem like you really care. If someone were to truly care they would help out the people from Tibet.
jcglezt2k 1 year ago 32
@jcglezt2k The idea that a person need go to extraordinary means just to prove that they think something is terribly wrong is ridiculous. The atrocities committed against the Tibetan people are equal to any in other areas the US has "intervened" ... the only reason we don't get involved is there is no $ in it for us. This commercial clearly makes light of the suffering of millions of people, and while I don't expect any capitalist interest to know any better, I DO expect more of Timothy Hutton.
Cancrizans 1 year ago
@jcglezt2k so in your opinion we are not allowed to have empathy?
JesseQuick23 1 year ago
@jcglezt2k I respect your opinion and you made a very good point but in my opinion, even though they did not mean to be mean in any way, they still should not make light of something like that, and doing so does not make the commercial funny. I am not saying that they should not put that ad up, but I can see how it can be considered offensive . And about helping the Tibetans, your right we should take action, but there is very little we can do and making an ad like that does not help the cause
HKISfreak1 1 year ago 4
@jcglezt2k
THRIPS101 1 year ago 2
the beginning of the video served to catch the attention of viewers, a method that every person making a commercial would use. there is no reason for anyone to get offended.. south park makes more 'offensive' jokes then this. there are more important things to worry about.
end of story, this commercial is funny. just like south park.
ohhellotherek 1 year ago 33

Cancrizans 1 year ago
I can't see how anyone can mistake this for anything but incredibly insulting. The ad starts out by stating that the people of Tibet are in trouble...their CULTURE is in jeopardy...and then goes on to mock the situation by basically saying "who cares, as long as Groupon enables us to get Tibetan cuisine for cheap har har!" Well, you think their food is good, but who cares if Tibetan families are being murdered right? Let's see how long we can exploit everything around us until it's gone.
Cancrizans 1 year ago 4
@Cancrizans but Tibetan families are not being murdered. In a country where most people have limited civil right, the Tibetan minorities have more rights than everyone else.
