I still have my copies of Memories magazine. It had a much too short run. One of the last issues in 1990 had an article about Al Jolson. He died in 1950. It claimed that he'd wanted to play himself. He'd also mentioned James Cagney. Larry Parks got an Oscar nomination for the first movie. He said that Jolson sang at full volume throughout the movie remakes. Understandably that would make lip synching a challenge.

Parks' lip-synch seems relatively poor. Maybe that's an artifact of the Youtube compression. Also, from your description of the story line, the writer must have taken great liberties, because in reality Al Jolson's mother died when he was 10. Regardless, I consider Parks to be a great actor, and Jolson to be the best stage presence in history.
It's Youtube at fault for the poor lip synch. Parks did a good job. He actually practiced singing the songs himself. Also his dad died before the Jolson Story premiered, though he's seen sitting in a theater. But the scene where Jolson could not bear to sit in the theatre and watch, lying in the manager's office was TRUE!

Larry Parks did an outstanding job in 'The Jolson Story' & 'Jolson Sings Again'. I think that it's on of the best examples of an impersonation.
I also liked seeing Tamara Shayne playing his mother. I remember her scenes in 'Ninotchka'.
