  • I know people are going to slam me for this, but I think Beyonce should do a remake of this song lol. It's sassy, fun, and funky.

Flo was so underrated, her voice is just soulful and raw kind of like Etta James

  • Betty Martin ( the 4th Primette-Supreme on this too ).

  • I LOVE Flo's voice; great range, strong, soulful, just as beautiful. I understand why Berry chose Diana to sing lead, but I also despise the constant need & desire for black artists to "cross over" (like Leon said in The Five Heartbeats "How come they never try to cross over to us?!") I'm all for expanding horizons but to push such a strong, beautiful voice into the background is. Ugh. Too heartbreaking & annoying to even think about.

  • Actually, Mary had the most prominent voice. Florence would normally sing soprano and Mary would use her contralto for the alto parts. (Listen to "Stop!.." what you hear is Mary's contralto and Flo on the high parts)

  • flo's pretty good but i like diana's voice better. it's so unique and angelic

  • Your an IDIOT & Your Parents are Ashamed cobrieni, You have No Clue what your talking about

  • what a wonderul voice flo has!!what the world lost by the ruthless miss diana ross she should be very ashamed!!!!!

  • I remember when I bought that album Meet the Supremes. This song immediately caught my ear, I loved it the first time I heard it and still do.I've heard it referred to as a "mild" hit, I don't know if thats true or not,but if it had been promoted, it probably would have taken off and been their first big hit. we can only imagine if that had happened, how different things would have been for the Supremes and Flo. I wish she had rolled with the punches like Mary did and stayed with the group.

  • isn't this suposed to be about popcorn so why are there potato chips, pizza, hotdogs, burgers and icecream aswell?

  • @MissPeaches901 True so true!

  • I also happen to like this song. The song is a little silly, but The Beatles thrived on making silly songs back in the same era.

  • I understand people love to take shots at diana; but people are jealous of the success of others; especially when they make it in show business. But Diana Ross was the biggest selling female artist in the world not just America so are you saying the whole world were fools. Diana Ross gave birth to the modern day female pop voice. a voice that is not too black and not too white. sweet, yet inocent. naughty yet nice. qualities Flo didn't posses. I don't think her voice is that spectacular.

  • @kennyfame what is a black voice and what is a white voice? o___O

  • @Mattluvzunot If you havent figured that question out, I cant answer that question for you. Its like asking whats the difference btw black hair and white hair or a black body shape and white shape. There is an inherent difference between the tone of a white voice and the tone of a white persons. A person with any kind of savy can detect the difference by listening to another person over the fone. If your one of those individuals who will like to believe we are all just the same; more power to u

  • @kennyfame No, you can not tell the race of a person via telephone without preconceived prejudices and generalizations. Furthermore colors don't have sound. Alto, tenor, soprano, etc. keys of voice tones that anyone of any race can possess regardless of geographical region. Soul is not synonymous to black people and pop is not synonymous to white people, even though it's obvious where their sound originated if you aren't a hermit.

  • @Mattluvzunot ok basically I am not going to continue going back and forth about something you feel verses something I feel. If there wasnt a diastinction there wouldnt be a long history of category's of music such as: race music, soul music, jungle music; if you cant gather that that is your issue not mine. I CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE OF A BLACK VOICE, if you cant thats your business. and so could Berry gordy read any Motown biography which is why the focus was on Diana.

  • @Mattluvzunot and furthermore I never said a thing about Pop being synomous with white's you got me twisted. Pop music is indicative of whats currently popular. maybe you should focus on studying the music business and how it functions rather creating a riduiculous argument with me. Anybody that cant see difference between White and Black rhythym is stuck in a everybody is equal box. To imply that I am prejudice, is prejudgement in itself; I am a realist. and realize that blacks & whites differ

  • @ MiamiPush2theLimit I take offence at the Americans comment due to the fact that i am a proud american (im not assuming you aren't/ im just saying.) I to call diana mediocrity is absurd!!!!! Those inocent Supreme lyrics in songs such as "Baby Love, Where did our love go, Stop in the name of love, would have sounded disingenuine with the self assuring tone of Florence Ballard voice. Diana high picthed inocent sounding, almost ambiguous voice resonated in a way the other girls could never have.

  • this song is the worse. flo is not that serious. i see in diana voice what bery saw cross over appeal; it wasnt a typical black voice that came out of the black churches back then. but boy was it and still is unique. which meshed perfectly with HDH productions. Nobody elses voice would have worked!!!!!

  • @kennyfame This is just not a good song. But Flo's voice is gorgeous. Great tone to it. Diana's success just proves that Americans like mediocrity.

  • with Flo singing they could easily been mistaken for the Marvelettes. as for the double entendre my book of lists has it categorized as a "song about maturbation" I don't see that connection i would guess about a blowjob.

  • my baby likes chips

  • Berry Gordy and the other person must of been hungry when they wrote this song LOL

  • Flo had the best voice then Mary and Diana. Diana had such a different voice she just stood out more.

  • @skipper8257 you forgot to say 'in my opinion' for what you said was indeed an opinion. this song is ok, florence is ok on it and it sank because it was shit. i would say that even if diana was on lead.IMO of course.

  • silly song

  • All four are on this great song... Flo, D, M & Barbara Martin. This is one of those risque, double-entendre songs that flew under the radar of white America. R&B had a rich history of them (rocket 88, big, long slidin' thang, more, many more) Flo could belt soul, feminity and strength just as well as an Etta or Aretha or anyone at Motown. The girls were being groomed for an audience with the Queen, and becoming royalty themselves. Motown made the Suprems then the Supremes made Motown.

  • @SMWhitePapers I grew up in Detroit during Motown's heydey and I assure you that they weren't being groomed to meet the Queen in 1961. The Miracles, Stevie Wonder ("The 12 Year Old Genius"), Martha and the Vandellas, Marvin Gaye, and others were already stars and while The Supremes certainly contributed heavily to Motown's success when the started to chart, the did NOT "make Motown."

  • I've just read from Wiki that the reason the song didn't get much promotion because the producer were afraid of the song's possible "double meaning"... Heck, I love the song exactly because of the "double meaning", and I'm pretty sure, from the way Flo sung it, she knew that Buttered Popcorn isn't just some ol' buttered popcorn....

  • @leomaruli What is the "double entendre" here? What else can "buttered popcorn" mean?

  • Florence Ballard you are the best singer wonderful voice I'm found of you !!! Rondiscscinema you are good great video !!! ?' -)

  • Flo can flow!

And they put Diana in front 4 more cross-over audiences

  • @Sensitivite1they did ok, but Flow had the talent and Diana had the look. Very unfortunate

  • I'll be right back ya'll,........i gotta get the hot popcorn outta the microwave.

  • Comment removed

  • popcorn,pizza,hot dogs,potato chips ? lol

  • This song puts a smile on my face every time. There’s so much mischievous fun in Ballard's voice that it just grabs you makes you happy. Has been a #1 smash in my household for many years.

  • I wish she had some one with the biz sense to get her money, credit and owenership of the supremes since techincally she created the group. If no Flo, no Diana. Don't get me wrong I do like Diana. Love Diana. Just don't like what they did to Flo. I hate that.

  • hahahahhahhahahhahhahahhahahhahahhahhahahhahhahahhaha

  • This is such a charming recording.! Flo's top!

  • Great video. Love the song too! :-)

  • More Butter, More Butter, More Butter, More!!

  • actually she was 17 when she recorded

  • This Great woman needs to get the respect she deserve....If it wasnt for her there wouldnt be a diana ...her voice is amazing!

  • Haha... so what exactly is this song about?

  • jajajaja not only popcorn, we're talking about hamburgers, hot dogs, fried potatoes and pizza jeje it's been a long time since I don't eat popcorn

  • The Supreme's tour guide said that Diane and one of the four tops went out on a date. When Berry Gordy found out, he told Diane to end it, but she denied that there was no romance at all. When Berry confronted the tour guide, she quit and demanded to be assigned to a new group. She also had a fling with Kendricks according to Otis, it's in the tempations movie.

  • The Supremes delivery on material was remarkable when you consider Florence was 17 years old singing this song.Mary maybe 15 singing pretty baby and Diana 17 singing those Dj songs.Imagine if narry had worked on all three voices. wow

  • This early Supremes song's style reminds me of the Vandellas.

  • what movie maker do you use?

  • This was a completely different sound which could have been capitalized on in concerts and on the albums. The Baby Loves were definetly tailored for Dianes Style but can you imagine those early hits without Flo and Mary?? Well I cant. Actually in my opinion the background vocals contributed a lot to the groove of the Supremes hits. Motown should have featured the talents of the other girls on stage and on album cuts and we all would be happy/ ie, envouge/xscape/marvelettes/etc

  • I love this! her voice is the greatest!

  • When I get in my Supremes mood I play the mess out of this song, Run, Run, Run, Ain't That Good News & Discover Me. My favorite group of all time.

  • the time where Americans got fat!

  • lol

  • I think Mary was the prettiest.

  • You know who else? Michael Jackson, ( head over hills for diana) and of course Berry Gordy, Ryan O neal, Gene Simmons, Eddie Kendricks, forget their names, but one republican politician and one of the four tops. Apparently lots of men liked petite women!

  • That's not true regarding the Four Tops. It went like this......Mary Wilson and Duke Fakir were a couple for a long while and Florence dated Obie Benson for a short time in the mid-sixties. None of the Four Tops ever dated Diane. Eddie Kendricks and Mary Wilson had a brief fling once.

  • okay. i'm hungry.

  • Florence had such a beautiful voice :D

  • They all had great voices but Flo's voice was and still is what SOUL is all about. She was the most beautiful out of all 3, then Mary and then Diane.

  • Totally agree. Wish there were more....

  • @flavarz

Miss Ballard was the prettiest, although Miss Wilson was the one I most wanted to bang.

  • @brianallancobb You are something else!

  • @MissAblue676792

Well, check out Miss Wilson's smile on the vid of The Supremes doing Stop In The Name Of Love on The Hollywood Palace and tell me any red-blooded American male wouldn't want to bang her.

  • I'll tell you something. This is the released version with the final arrangements. I've got an alternate take and it's slightly different. In it, you can hear Diane's shrill voice singing in on the harmonies. She almost overrides the others. To be honest, I'm glad they chose this version to release, because the alternate is not that good. The vocals, except for Florence, are pretty harsh.

  • Diana is VERY clear on this - Diana is singing the soprano (high) part (what Flo would normally sing when on backing).

Yes the screechy high voice is Diana LOL

  • great song. thanks for posting!

  • Um Yum, I had buttered popcorn at the flicks last night!! GREAT video!

  • wat she talking bout?

  • This is one of the best records The Supremes ever recorded. I was hooked from the first time I heard it. Flo had a marvelous voice and she could really jam!

I wish they recorded more in the same style....

  • Comment removed

  • i dont give a fuck who dont like my comments i did reasearch bitch

  • she was depresed.

    she got raped!

  • WOW!!! I was expecting Flo to have a Faith Evans kind of voice or maybe it's because they look alike but its deep and rich like Etta James and she was probably around 20 recording this WOW!!!

  • this is nice! could have been a hit. sounds very smokey influenced florence sounds great. you can hear her personality here.

  • I really love this song..this would've been a hit...

If she wasn't talking about butter popcorn..then what was she talking about?

  • she's talking about her boyfriend is paying more attention to eating buttered popcorn than her... get it?? LOL

  • No it is NOT Diana's fault. Diana set up TRUST FUNDS for Flo's kids when Flo died so that when they came of age they would have a few thousand dollars or so each to do what they wanted to do. However, when they did come of age all the money was gone...they say all that themselves in an interview that is posted on YouTube in which they thank Diana not bash her

  • i've always wondered wht happened to the trust fund money diana set up for flo's children.

  • @CDBtv12 Flo's husband got his grubby mitts on it and spent the lot.

  • He sure is =D

  • This song never even made it to WABC in NY. The lyrics were considered too suggestive for airplay. This was 1962 (or late '61) were talking about. It didn't take too long for DJ's to figure out that Flo was not singing about something you buy in a theatre! However it is a great song!

  • what is she talking about lol

  • This would have been A MAJOR hit, if berry had promoted it right, instead of the B-side "who's Loving you", if it recieved alot of plays on radio stations with hardly any promotion, no telling what it would have been, if it was pushed into bigtime!!!

  • Hey,Let some hot producers Remix all Flo's lead songs and release them!!!!!!!!Quincy Jones Baby Face and a shit load of guy's from Europ!!!!!1

  • OMG Mark Ronson as well!! - he produced most of Amy Winehouse's masterpiece second album "Back To Black"

    Flo saaaang this!

  • Flo sang this one, after hearing this, I'm convinced that had she had better material, arrangements and a little coaching, she could've been really good.

  • ah ha ha. oh ho hoo. oh yeah ho!) 2:06

  • I hate popcorn lol...But i Love the song!

I love the sound Flo makes during the chorus (ah ha ha. oh ho hoo. oh yeah ho!)

  • how can THIS be a BACKGROUND to DIANA'S NAISALY ASS?!!?

  • LOL. Ask Berry Gordy.

    Flo could SAAANG!

  • and to belive she was so young recording this!

  • Exactly!

  • this song was the first time i have actually heard flo sing. the cute little face does not match the tunes she is belting out

  • Comment removed

  • Me to, ive never heard her sing, she's amazing!! How could Gordy put her on background!!

  • More butter! More butter! More butter! Long live the memory of Florence "Flo" Ballard. Nothing could touch the harmonies of the original Supremes.........

  • splendid...cute vid...love Flo

  • Diana who?

  • Nothing bad!

  • diana ross ugly big eyed ass needs to be paying flos children some money.. itz partly dianas fault that my flo baby is dead. and if i recall..flo and mary originated the group! they let diana join. so while dianas ugly ass is popping out rich actor babies, floz kidz are on welfare! dam diana ross to hell!

  • my goodness all this animosity as someone you dont know...i agree that Flo should have been lead and that her death and story are a tragedy but thats about it...if anyone is going to hell its Gordy for misusing his artists

  • Comment removed

  • That's what I was thinking!

I am a MASSIVE fan of Flo and know that she did not want to be on welfare - and as soon as she got money she got off it!

No disrespect to her kids or her, but they need to get themselves together like their mother did!

  • Well looking at the stats,Berry destroyed her career....She had looks and talent...Read Mary's book. Offers{movie] were coming Flo's way,but Motown turned them down b/c of what they were trying to build with Diana. Could you imangine a group were the lead singer is not the only star? That's like Kelly being a big of a star as Beyonce.

  • GO, FLO!!!!! Diana and Mary are great....and it worries me so I don't know what to do!

  • Barbara is also on the backing - as this was recorded before she left. Flo TEARS UP the lead haha! yes yes Flo could saaang

  • That's it FLO YOU BETTER SAAAAANG THAT NOW HAHA!

    Flippin classic THE R E A L EFFIE WHITE!

  • whatever

  • Reminds me of Peanut Butter by the marathons!

A wonder this never made it!Thanks for the post!

  • Flo was the lead...and this was one of their more popular songs...I guess b/c she wasn't willing to sleep with the married guy and have his kid...that it was promotoed as heavily as the song Diana sang lead on...

  • The radios actually loved this song but Berry wouldn't promote it. He should have just promoted it - they would have charted then he could return to the sound he loved so much - Diana's.

  • emily flo is lead!

  • flo had to stand 17 feet away from the microphone thats how loud she was!

  • flo should of been the lead. rip flo.

  • was there 4 supremes when this was recorded, but not when the girls were introduced to the public? I'm asking for a real Supremes historian to let me know. I know they started out with 4 members...

  • I believe this was their second single with Motown so Barbara Martin is on it. I have a pic of the single and it says Supremes on it and I believe they changed their name when there was still 4 of them as they changed the name as Berry asked them to when they signed. Barbara Martin left after the recording of YOUR HEART BELONGS TO ME

  • I'm not sure if anyone mentioned in earlier posts, there should be one small correction. The girls were not known as The Supremes yet, they were called The Primettes when they recorded this song. No matter the name, ya just gotta luv 'em.

  • Actually the single has the name Supremes on it LOL. I have a pic of one of the singles and there is also one in the video that clearly shows Supremes. The only songs they released as The Primettes were the ones with Lupine.

Flo killed the lead though didn't she, ooo she had PIPES. Apparently it recieved major airplay around Detroit but sadly Berry didn't promote it

  • flo is my boo she killed that lead. she should have been in diana's place as lead singer of the surpremes.

  • what a great voice!

  • This is a very cute song. I don't know about anyone else but, it sure did male me want some buttered popcorn.

  • Great song and I loved it. Florence was the best and she sang great. Beautiful.

  • I couldn't watch it for half a minute cause I got to hungry for popcorn from it O_O

is that how you say it in English? right

  • to=too (ya it isn't really important but still)

  • karma. Diane will get hers and flos kids will get theirs. My next screenplay was going to be about Terrorist but I think I will do a Supremes film instead. Anyone want to brain storm and write with me? send me a message.

  • Have Faith Evans play Flo LOOL.

You should use original recordings in it =D

  • Comment removed

  • I agree. Faith Evans should be Flo. She favors her. That would be great!

  • While I agree that Faith favors Flo, Her voice is too high to cover Flo's voice. Flo was a contralto (a beautiful one), and Faith is a full soprano, so it would be weird for her to cover her songs. Just my thoughts.

  • I agree, Faith probably shouldn't actually cover Flo's songs, but I was saying she could play her in a film b/c they favor physically. In a film, they can always use Flo's voice instead of Faith's for the singing parts.

  • Actually Flo was a Soprano:) listen tu her on people, silent night, & heavenly father, not to mention others.

  • Are you still writing a screenplay about The Supremes?

  • Wow, Florence sounds AMAZING.

Her voice sooo rich and soulful, could you imagine her working with Norman Whitfield? Or even Berry Gordy himself as he actually penned/produced this track I believe.

    SAAANG FLO! 5*

  • im in the mood for popcorn

  • nice

  • I'm sorry to say diana does sound awful on this!!!!!! But Flo is excelent!!!!!!!

  • i love this song

  • with a voice like that i cant believe Berry let Flo sing back up to Diana....and Diana is a straight up bitch. in my opinion she killed Flo and i dont think she regrets anythng she did...

  • that really is a shame what diana did, but she will get what is coming to her.

  • to bad flo died at only thrity something...the manager just loved diane, even though she was great she couldn't really compare to the strength of flo's voice....ontop of that

  • Florence Ballard had such a sexy voice.

  • Apparently when Flo passed Diana Ross set up a trust fund for her daughters. No clue what happened to it.

  • Well, Berry picked the sexy skinny one to hook up with, and he made a ton of money off of it. Personally, I think it was a very wise business decision, as the Supremes songs I know best, which all have Diana on lead, are much better than this song. Flo had a good voice too, but the style of songs they got famous with is much wider appealing, and IMO the harmony in the background, which was Flo, was a VERY large part of that great sound.

  • I agree with most of your points - except the one about Diana being "the sexy one." ...Really? Because I, and I think a lot of people, think she looks kind of like a bug or something.

  • I think you're one of very brave few who'd try to argue that Diana had a nicer body than Flo or Mary. By definition doesn't having a nice body require T-&-A? Haha...

  • Diana wasn't just "skinny," she was SKIN AND BONES. No boobs, no butt. Naturally you're allowed to find whatever features attractive that you do, but I think you're in the minority about Diana, haha. Excluding maybe Smokey or Brian Holland (and who knows who else, haha...)

  • Haha. You have questionable tastes, sir.

  • Or so I've been told lol. It's all good.

  • AMEN! Dis guy Flo's singin' bout was crazy to pick buttered popcorn over kissin' her haha. But i like my babeh's anything but skinneh honeh. You right bout one ting.

  • This was a hit maybe when they got big in the mid sixties they should have a released this again bc its grrreat!!!

  • It would have been a hit when it was originally released but Berry didn;t want this sound to be associated with the group so didn't promote it avidly - the radio stations LOVED it though. It's an AWESOME track featuring cute backing and a POWERHOUSE lead from Florence Ballard, definately a fav of mine - a supreme classic.

Berry would NEVER think of releasing a single with Flo taking all or most of the lead while Diana was in the group after they were having hits

  • Flo rarely got a leads on the alums either.

For the Meet The Supremes album - that this is featured on. Mary has one lead and Flo has one lead but there were at least 2 other leads from Flo that could have been including, one being the GREAT, Hey Baby that would have been a follow-up to this had Berry decided on promoting this properly

  • Yes, Diana sounds screechy and youthful on this recording, but it works within the style.

With this layout, the group sound has an entirely different feel.

Anyone read "The Lost Supreme" yet? I'm looking forward to getting a copy.

  • This is a great song. Flo was amazing and full of soul. I almost wished they'd kept some of this sound.

Diana sounds better on the high backing vocals on both this and "Can't take my eyes off of you" with Mary Wilson.

Looking forward to reading the new book about Flo. I hope her family is being counted in on the profits as they deserve something.

  • I think Flo's daughters are getting some of the profits from the book. Diana sounds so screechy in the back LOL but it's cute. Flo was AWESOME on backing though but this song shows she could be just as good on lead - it would have been so nice if they at least gave her some leads on their later albums. They even took her BRILLIANT lead of People off the planned original release of the "There's A Place For Us" but it's great the Hip-O release featured it =D

  • I was just reading that the author will be conducting a tour in Detroit to promote Flo's book. Her daughter Michelle Chapman will be joining him.

They will also be visiting Flo's grave for a Birthday Memorial. Then the Author will be publicly presenting the first royalty check to Flo's family made out to Florence Ballard.

I think this is quite great of the author. I can't wait to get hold of the book, and hopefully the entire 8 hours of audio he's planned to release.

  • Yes it really is great, thanks for the info. I have posted some of the interview - with the permission of Peter Benjaminson. I have about 4 vids - you should check them out if you haven't =D

    Have a S U P R E M E day.
