I has this same amp, that I ran two different Sunn cabinets with. One was a 18" JBL and a horn, the other was a 6x10" in a "V" cab. HUGE sound. Yeah, I had the ol' Big Muff, Morely, etc. And yeah, that thing would shock the shit out me, now and again.
Pretty much ANY tube amp can get really nice saturation. You wanna hear it wail, turn the volume on your guitar all of the way up. An attenuator is a device that goes between the amp head and the speaker. They let you drive the amp as hard as you want without having to worry about volume, it turns down the volume of the speaker.
They all look different, mine is a Weber. Check out my video of my Solarus, I play stoner metal through it with no effects besides compression.
You did a real puss job of demoing this amp. Why they hell did you put a distortion pedal on an amp that has immaculate distortion if you just TURN IT UP. No, 2 is not loud enough to drive it hard. If your position is that you want to be able to have distortion at bedroom levels... Get an attenuator!!!
@briel What is an attenuator and what does it look like? Is it basically the same as installing a master volume control?
I have this same amp and I put it on the full all out 10 (!!!!!!!!) and it shook my bedroom walls and my windows.....but I heard no crazy distortion like everybody rants and raves about for Sunn amps, it stayed relatively clean. I meen I definitely don't HATE that it stays clean but I mean how do you get it to distort?
@MrMuddyBleach Oh and to anyone who read that I put it on 10, to give you an idea of how loud it was, the strings on my acoustic sitting across from it all started to vibrate from the pure wall of sound that was coming out.
Love this amp and it gets LOUD as hell, but sorry to say it stays clean (clean enough for me atleast)
I HAVE 3 SUNN AMPS. TWO SOLARUS AND A 190L. HAVE $490.00 IN ALL THREE. THEY SOUND GREAT, THE 190L HAS HAD A MASTER VOLUME PUT ON IT. PLAY THEM THROUGH LANEY CABS. 2X12, AND 4X12. HARD TO BEAT.
lol, no joke, i have the EXACT same guitar strap as the one on your gibson...not trying to be creepy haha, just wanted to point it out cuz its pretty weird :P
I gotta one up ya. I met this guy at a party that wanted to jam, my lucky number is 23. His address was 2323. Which was nuts. I walk into his place, he's got this same strap on his guitar which I had on mine at the time and... the ultimate kicker.. on his favorite guitar, he put the same goddam obscure Glassjaw sticker I have on my favorite guitar I never take out. We've been close friends for years now. Whats with this strap?? Ty...
@tydogg woah, that's pretty surreal haha, the two of you could have been seperated at birth. i bought mine off of my friend while we were jamming, but i didn't really encounter anything eery like you did :O
hah.. according to the laws of physics, no, I can't... but dammit if I haven't tried... ;) (im all torso, no reach at all... what can I say?) .... thanks for watching... Ty...
Is the solarus made mainly for bass or guitar, because I know of one for sale and it comes with a 2x15 cab and I'm wondering if it will sound good on guitar.
@tydogg Yes, and I guess it sounds like a stupid question, but I know a lot of sunn amps can be played on both instrument and I was just wondering which one the solarus was mainly built for.
@yrureadingthisname Solarus is a guitar amp. It's 60W RMS. The Solarus is an off shoot from the older Sentura II. The Sentura came with KT88 power tubes. I'm not sure about the Solarus, but I believe that they switched to 6550's. Also, the Solarus had a mid-boost switch where as the Sentura didn't.
Finally got around to making a video of whats going on there a bit... I'll make another video getting into the octaves... but... this should get you started... its the newest video on the page... Ty...
how much did you pay for the big muff?I hope you didn't pay alot i can tell by the knobs on that big muff its not original.I own a lot of vintage eh pedals an.And the original knobs are circular with a point with a white line on it.On all the vintage eh pedals. And that one is way to mint to be an original.looks like it was just built yesterday.
Dude! GREAT demo! I understand what your saying about loud.. I have owned a sceptre and now have a 2000s. Its pretty cool to see the family history living on through time! cheerz / B. Sundholm
I wish mine had the reverb. i have a 1969 200s bass head that i have converted to el34s. Great sound. Put it on concert and crank it until you are concerned about ur cab. With mine it doesnt get any louder past6 just more beautiful distortion.
My cousin's band (Frown Pow'r, check them out) plays Sunn amps exclusively. He has a stack that's as tall as he is, and the Sceptre head. I think he said the cab has like 6 12" speakers in it. That thing is crazy loud!
@EnslavedInrot No shit - i was sitting center row "g' when Mountain opened with Never in my Life back in 1970- my thorax is still reverberating from those beautiful Sunn stacks.
50 w TUBE amps are loud fucking amps, sometimes I cant imagine why someone would get a 100w, but be turned up too loud for amp to warm up and get full, 50w are all you need, chunky, thick, warm, good purchase!
I bought a '68 Solarus combo back in about '73 that had been equipped with EV SRO 12" speakers. It was the first quality amp I ever owned. When I moved in '79 I shipped the amp, but when I got it the SROs were stolen. I was so distraught that I stupidly cut the bottom off and made a head out of it. I still have it and will never sell it. After owning Marshall, Fender, Mesa, Reeves, Laney, Genz-Benz, etc. it's my favorite amp. Great clean. Very pedal friendly.
Nice! your head is probably 1969 or lower because I learned this type of fabric was use until 1969. they use a thinner one after 69. I just got a 1969 60 watt Solarus head with JJ KT88 and his original cab 2x12'' and a Sorano(Bass) 60watt head with it's original 1x15'' cab. I feed them both with a Epiphone LesPaul Baritone and a Big Muff!...I'll do a youtube of it and let you know. there's not enough video of it. thanks for your video!
Check out my video of my Sunn O))) Sceptre. I also play my Sunn amp thru a Big Muff, a re-issue one tho, made in NYC. Thanks for posting this demo of the Solarus.
Hey man, thanks so much for responding. I just got like ten of the nicest emails ever and im having an awesome day because of it. Someday I'd like to have a Sunn cab to go with it, but honestly, the Engl sounds so good to me anyway. And I guess I should mention. My neighbors took off for the day so I decided to open this guy up all the way... Without the Muff, the Solarus really caps out at a lower volume than I thought it would. Just wanted to mention.. Thank you, thank you!... Ty...
