Having worked in a cardboard box factory, making pizza boxes, they are 'definitely' recyclable after being used. Cardboard is mashed then washed when recycled. It's the whole food chunks that cause a problem, not grease. It was a 'once only' but did see speck of food remnant in one pizza box, that was made from re-formed cardboard.

It can be re-used, if not recycled. Wouldn't it be great if - like soda bottles - it had a deposit and could be sanitized and re-used?

Of course that would mean pizza boxes might become more....rare.

So I've got good news and bad news.

First, the bad. Your Rosso Pomodoro box is what is called a "hybrid material". The layer of metal foil and polyester is fused together onto the paper layer. It cannot be recycled as the layers cannot be easily separated. This is a problem with all such products.

@ScottsPizzaTours: Here in Norway we usually put a semi-nonsticky layer underneath the pizza. So the box can be recycled, the cost can be low, and the pizza doesn't stick to the cardboard. It also "ventilates" the pizza so it stays crisp!

Could somebody explain to me why a greasy pizza box would not be recyclable? Just throw it in the recycle bin and the processing company would turn it in to toilet paper or whatever. I think the process involves cleaning the paper pulp, so I am pretty sure they are familiar to removing (greasy) contamination from the paper and cardboard.

Most paper/cardboard recycling involves the media being pulped, washed, and bleached, so oils stains aren't actually a big problem. In fact, the foil-coated box is probably harder to recycle than the oily one.

I'm in Europe, Romania - here we're barely starting to separate plastic and glass, pizza boxes are plain white cardboard.

Still, what I can buy here for about 8$ looks way better than that oven pizza & tastier- I can actually pick bacon or mushroom slices off the pizza if I want to...

That italian box would cost about 60 us cents here... when pizza is ~8$ and you get a free soda and don't pay tips for delivery, that box can be a bit much

In the city of Seattle you can throw your pizza boxes into the yard waste bin and it'll be composted. You can also throw meat in there too. This is a kind of recent development. I think our municipal yard waste compost vendor has had the ability to process these items for a while now but one of the delays was concern about pest problems. Our yard waste gets picked up every other week so some food scraps could get pretty rancid while sitting on the cub.
