At the time of the accident, they are in a fight. Drew dies in the accident and Nikki sees his ghost outside of her window, without realizing he's dead. She reaches out to him before the impact. Drew sees this, in his parallel-post life, and realizes how he was careless: he dropped the camera in the ocean and he didn't see the red light.

I love this, it's beautiful and sad and excellently filmed.

Here's what I think: I think Drew dies. When they pull up to the stoplight, the girlfriend looks anxious, concerned. Then, Drew is by himself, which symbolizes his death. He's the only one on the street and he is wondering why he's alone. He sees the handprint, an outstretched palm. Nikki does this motion in an earlier moment, when she outstretches her palm towards his camera.
