Nope - it was primarily the protection of the union from the emergence of a theocratic system such as that in the UK where the monarch is the head of the countries official religion, the Church of England.

Read up on Thomas Jefferson and the first amendment, it's very clear

ok, I am prepared to admit where I am wrong. I did the reading you suggested and jefferson is clear that government must not interfere with religion and the first ammendment enshrines that.

But i still stand by my claim that the united states is secular and not a christian nation - no where does it specify christianity in the constitution.

it is mostly secular and it was the founding fathers to make nation secular as they know from history how the state can make its own religious sect (e.g. English church) then abuse & kill citizens in the name of religion. so they thought it's best to keep politics away from religion but then most of them are raised as Christians so there is much influence in writing of the constitution voluntarily or involuntarily,
