Hey JSYK he plays in Bensusan tuning, DADGAD. Gotta drop the B string to a A. Not quite there. makes it easier to play the intervals in the song. also for the solo. Good video and collection tho:)
thanks Dude! Very helpful! The other half of the puzzle (my opinion) is learning the right hand finger picking. Stills dos this syncopated thumb back and forth on 6th and 4th strings - very tough to master! but knowing the chords is half the game!
Well, I think I will revise my previous post. Years ago (1981 or 82) a pilot told me the 7 dial referred to instruments on a plane. But now knowing that Mr. Stills hangs out in England a lot, The 7 Dials is well known (but small) area in London's West End. Also It was still a byword for urban poverty in the early-twentieth century. I know believe this is the reference. But, hey I was could be wrong again. :) Check out Wikipedia "7 dials"
Just to set the record straight. The seven dials are the 7 analog instrument dials on pre-digital aircraft.
I think it was Stephen's influence on Jeff (not vice-versa) as I have a 1976 recording of Stills doing this song. Jeff Pevar wrote the music to "Little Blind Fish" in 1998 (David Crosby wrote the lyrics).
@micropirate I'm a private pilot and I wondered what the hell he was talking about in the song. Thought it was a place at first. Somewhere down in Louisiana or something. Always thought he said "southern dials". But thanks for setting the record straight. Now it makes sense.
Please make a more broke down tutorial if you get a chance. This is such a good jam but it's so hard to learn being a beginner. I realize you want people to improv but note for note is where it's at for this song
Excellent playing and lesson! I just wish some of you guys who give lessons would video it from the players point of view..like mount a web cam onto a goose neck mic stand and stand it over your shoulder so the camera acts as your eye and gives YOUR perspective ..putting the camera in front of you offers essentially an 'upside down' perspective. and its sometimes hard to see your fingerings.
This would make the lesson ALOT easier for everyone, especially beginners. Thanks for the lessson!
Steve, You have outdone yourself again. I have struggling to learn this song (I had the right tuning, and leads were pretty good, but was way off on the cords.). Thanks again.
Why didn't you just post a cover video? The instruction was not the best or explained very well.

This melody was possibly influenced by Neil's For the Turnstiles, from On the Beach around '74.

The Seven Dials refers to a place in England I believe......
azcharlie2009 2 years ago
Got it. somebody mistranscribed it. Its seven dials as in gauges on an instrument panel of a plane, and "chasin' NVA's" not MBA's.
Rainman270 2 years ago
Hey Steve, what does the seven isles refer to ? and what does "chasin' MBA's in Vietnam" mean ?
