Thanks for the review, How are you connecting them to the iMAC? I also have an Imac wanted to get more space on my desk. Would the AV40 setup be better than what I have : Tannoy Reveal near field speakers and Samson Servo 260 Power Amplifier ?
@supersonic566 Fuck you dude. If you don't like my comment then read on. You must not have a life if you respond to a post a month after I made a comment. For the record I'm going with the bx5d2's. So Piss off!
Please answer this question: my dilemma is this, should i buy Studiophile AV 40 or Studiophile BX5a (not deluxe, the older version). Studiophile AV 40 is cheaper for like 80$ but is it better to buy bx5a. TNX alot, and nice puppy :)
I have a tendency to blow out all my computer speakers, laptop speakers, stereo speakers so I'm trying to upgrade to something that sounds awesome and can handle serious bump. Can I blast these??
it would be nice if you could include multiple styles of sounds, like sound affects, a spoken-word track, a techno song, a rock song, and maybe a rap or country song so we can observe its lower, mid, and higher range. Great review though. Have you seen the Logitech S715i? I just bought one off of Amazon and am curious as how it compares.
Thank you for this review. I've got 2 questions. 1. Do these speakers produce enough bass? Because i'm an upcoming producer of Dubstep. 2. Do you recommend to buy an external soundcard, or can you just directly hook them up to your pc/mac? Greets!
Thanks for the review...and we forgive you for the Bon Jovi.. maybe do a review with two or three different styles of music back to back for people to get an idea...like you said..depending on our speakers or earphones will impact the review. But have a quick Bon Jovi..some metal and some hip hop people will have an idea of the over all sound...again thanks! Oh...what is the best price that you have found? Saw some on ebay for 120 brand new.
Hehe, this is like watching an ad for high definition digital TV signal over an analog channel on an old CRT television. Anyway, I'm sure these speakers are excellent, a friend of mine has a pair and I just ordered one as well.

@radiodejaylee How is this a good review when it contains numerous stops and starts for no good reason! Quite simply - start again. You obviously have no standards
just so people know ...they are active speakers....on side has the amp...the other one does not....you have to connect the using a wire that is provided with them.
@BIGDADDYF50 its very easy just make sure you put + to + and - to - ...if you get this wrong you'll not damage them but they will sound bad.....other than that you cant really screw this up ....
I got these speakers and they do sound great!. Do you have the 'popping' problem when switching them off?? or have you got around this? I wanna protect them from breaking as much as possible!!
hi man good video!!! i have a question about the monitors in this vid !!! there are the AV 40 !!! but what do you think about the AV 30 it's the same familly of monitors but every body told me they have a bass problem ??? so what do you think ? thanks
@boushidow I haven't had the opportunity to listen to a set of AV30s, but if the bass has any less presence than the AV40s I can definitely see that being a concern. My best suggestion is just find a local music store, guitar center, best buy music center, etc, and see if you can compare the two.
@dtz1000 Well they are not meant for general computer use. They are meant to be used as beginner studio monitors. I use them for computer speakers because I prefer the sound they give my music. I also have set of the Logitech Z-2300 I'll use if watching movies as it gives the better bass presence.
@saxomojarf A better alternative to the AV40 are the discontinued Yamaha MS50. They are far more accurate than the fake studio monitor AV40 and cost about half as much from ebay. They also have fuller bass which does not distort speech as happens with the Av40. They also don't hum as the AV40s do. However, the AV40 does produce more detail in the sound, but overall i prefer the MS50. I've owned both. They also kick the butt of the Logitech Z-2300 if you are looking for something with a sub.
@saxomojarf Just tried the discontinued Monitor Audio i-deck and have been quite impressed. For music listening and general computer use it has been very good. The sound is very detailed as with the AV40 but it doesn't have the annoying problems the AV40 has, at least not to the same degree. The i-deck is an ipod speaker so a lot of people ignore it for computer use, but that is rather foolish i think. I would take the i-deck over the AV40 any day.
@Barnabas45 They come with an RCA to 1/8" adapter, If you're looking to use these in a studio though you'll get much better sound from running them through a USB audio interface first and just using 2x 1/4" TRS cables.
@slaving300 I'd get the M-audio's, because bose is overpriced for what you get, and i've heard the klipsch have some problems, but klipsch is still a great company. I personally just ordered some m-audio's :D
I currently have a pair of logitech z4 with the subwoofer. Should i get these av40's or use the z4? Im planning to use it for my korg microstation and general computer purposes.
@vince12345 If you're serious about your music I'd go with these, they are a good introduction pair of monitors. Once you start actually producing stuff and selling it constantly, i'd step up to the BX5a set.
I got the same ones....looking back..BX5a or 8a would have been the better choice..These are no good for external gaming speaker use. Music sound quality is pretty good...Really though, BX5a.
I have a pair of the M-Audio Studiophile AV-40. I can not tell you how much I love them. They sound better in person then on this review. The sound is flat and balanced, so we don't have overwhelming bass, mids, or highs. They get considerably loud to the pain of my neighbors.
Have fun with your purchase of speakers. Keep in mind that it only matters if it sounds good to YOU.
I looking to buy a set of speakers for pc and general use as i use my pc and ipod for everything i do entertainment wise but can't decide on what's best....the z2300 or the AV40's. I love music and into sound quality but also like bass
@navutokaboy I have both of them, If you're looking for watch movies and general music listening I'd go with the Z-2300. The additional of the subwoofer is amazing for movies and gaming.
If you're looking for the best quality for music go with the AV40s they give better clarity.
@dannypp1 I use them for when i record voiceover work on protools, and I have used them to mix a few bands recordings, but overall I use them for home music listening.
The reason I wanted to know about its brightness is because I have had many cheap 20 to 40'ish dollar pc speakers from companies like Insignia, Logitech, HP, Dell, etc... and all of their speaker lights were very sharp, circle type form, bright, glowing and kinda distracting
These AV40 speakers I have researched for quite a while since there seems to be something surrounded that makes the light more dimmer and cooler and not annoying
I know those you are talking about, i swear i could read a book by those bright lights alone. but the AV40 is nothing like that, the light is quite dim. cant find a single thing on my table in the dark now.
and yes, i have them. loving every moment of music now.
that's great to know. thx for your help. I will definitely consider picking these up sometime during the beginning of October ; )
regarding music. How well does it handle bass? It's not too distorted or sloppy tho, right? I like good impact/quality and want to play at slightly high volume without it sounding bad. I also wondering if these speakers would be good for all rounder as well; for rock, metal, electronica, hip-hop, drum and bass, vocals, etc...
they don't bloat, or distort or do anything of that sort. The crossover does a wonderful job of cutting down the unwanted frequencies and everything from 85 Hz to 20 kHz is rendered quite nicely. It takes a bit of getting used to at first though, because all the deep low rambles i heard through a headphone have gone missing. But everything else is there. I'm not much of a hip hopper though, but right now the scene of yellow submarine came alive in front of me with all its drama.
It does all kind of rock material wonderfully, as well as metal, electronica, drum and bass, jazz, classical et al. dont know hip hop. Lil Wayne sounded quite sharp.. But Drake sounded nice.
It really does thump the walls just to warn you. Even without the bass boost the bass is insanely high. I personally have an EQ which cuts the bass quite a lot. Although these speakers sound really great for casual listening, I wouldn't recommend it for studio work just because of the bass
Hey man, you bought this speakers today ( also based on reviews ), but I have a major problem, for some reason those bastards won't power up. Did you have any problem with that ?
@ilcool90 no i did not have any issues with them powering on. I'd say if you know your outlet is working and they still won't power on return them and get a working set.
ok someone please help me out, m audio av40's or should i get the harmon kardon soundsticks ii? i dont really care about the design im just more intrested in sound quality or should i go for something else?
@thorfoxxx If you want to use them strictly for music, AV40s. For anything with heavy bass, gaming, movies, you'll benefit from the sub with the soundsticks, although i'd suggest the Logitech Z-2300 over the soundsticks.
I own these speakers. They are absolutely fantastic for the price. Placement and environment do factor into how they will sound, so keep that in mind. They sound especially nice in a small room or office. Buy them!!!
i am considering either these or the prodipe pro5 or the Behringer B1030A... i do some studio work but i mostly use em for music or movies... what should i choose i am confused reallyOo'
@intoxLongboarding he said that he would have gladly paid 250 for them, meaning that its a good deal for 150 and that they sound like speakers in the 250 range
Get these speakers nd a USB audio interface and you're pretty set for personal listening in a high-quality format. I got the speakers for $110 and the audio interface for $90. For around $200 you'll be hard pressed to fine a cleaner sound. And not in the "cool" way, literally cleaner. Getting monitors without a USB interface is just a waste of money regardless of their price. And in the future you always have that increased ability in relation to TRS, XCR, and the normal RCA plugs.
the only problem i have with these is that the left speaker with the amp gets so hot it can burn your fingers.and thats only after thirty min. of use. and is it me or does the bass seem more dominant in the right speaker?
I switched from computer speakers to M-Audio BX5A with a KRK10S sub. I also bypassed my macs internal soundcard in favor for an M-Audio Firewire DAC. It sounds great.
You should check out the BX5A's or even the BX8A's and look at a studio sub. Studio monitors sound so much better when there's a sub to complement the low end freq.
hey when the speakers are turned down to a very low level, does yours sounds unbalanced (left speaker with knob has very little sound compare to the right one)?
@NanzooMusic The Power wattage difference. Take the AV-30 for example, it seperates into 15 watts per channel (speaker). The Av-40s obviously have more power, so basically one speaker is louder than the other. Hope this helps!
@SmokestackLightnin79 for games I'd definitely suggest a 2.1 system. For music they are fantastic, but anything that you really want overpowering bass on, get something that has the dedicated subwoofer.
For my gaming and movie watching I have a set of the Logitech Z2300 hooked up to my xbox 360 and I couldn't be happier with them. Nice thing is they are about in the same price range.
stick with your logitech z10's mate .. monitors are more for production .. they play flat sounds where as your z10's wont .... if your litsning to music your better usin two speakers and a sub
@SmokestackLightnin79 wow dude Definetly better to listen music in monitor speakers. Logitech is hifi. THese days we say LoFi! Buy maudioBX5a or something. You can hear the whole music clear. but if you want ot play games only and dont want to listen music mutch better then "LoFi" .... you decide.. Hifi's arebad respond Monitors are Perfect music respond.
I actually posted one of those a few months back, but a LOT has changed since then. I am thinking about doing room tour v2 in a month or so once my set up is complete.
the bass is actually pretty limited if you're really wanting to crank up the bass. If you're looking for something with really strong bass presence I will be doing a review in a few weeks over the Logitech Z-2300 2.1 system. The bass on that system is fantastic.
the volume button began to make dust in the faders type noise and the headphone jack became fussy and would not disengage to speaker mode properly after the headphones were disconnected with only one speaker working, I get the speaker to work by inserting headphone jack in half way and moving about until the speaker works, seems like very bad quality parts used but I guess it reflects in the price. But they do sound really good.
do you use these monitors for studio work or as computer speakers for your itunes?
Review is okay but its hard to judge the sound on a video, does anybody know if there are any other reviews for these studio monitors where they are being reviewed for studio use, i.e. mixing etc?
these are great for gaming on your pc or listening to music, they can be used for mixing but I wouldn't recommend them for just mixing, you might want to look into some krk's or above instead.
Sorry for late reply, really late. but i've never listened to the AE A2's, but it really depends on what you're doing is this for studio work or just a set of desktop speakers?
i dont wanna drop $150 is they end up sounding just like my philips commercial stereo system...
mistergenechoe 14 minutes ago
I see a lot of people just using these to listen to music... but i need to know if these are worthwhile for actual mixing and using with a daw.

If I am limited on desk space, would you suggest the AV 40s or the BX5As?

Witch one is better the M- Audio or the Sony SRS-DB500?
bigdogsin805 1 year ago
how bright in the blue circle light on the left speaker if you're going to use them for desktop speakers?
I don't want something too bright and distracting, these seems a bit cool, neon and not so brightish, but the camera does have a way to play tricks.
so i wanna know is that light distracting?
BIGDADDYF50 1 year ago
@BIGDADDYF50
not very bright at all, and it's matted with white plastic around it.
it handles music really nicely. i'm saying it even after using aego m's.
bawkshish 1 year ago
@bawkshish
so you have these AV40 speakers, right bawkish?
The reason I wanted to know about its brightness is because I have had many cheap 20 to 40'ish dollar pc speakers from companies like Insignia, Logitech, HP, Dell, etc... and all of their speaker lights were very sharp, circle type form, bright, glowing and kinda distracting
These AV40 speakers I have researched for quite a while since there seems to be something surrounded that makes the light more dimmer and cooler and not annoying
BIGDADDYF50 1 year ago
@BIGDADDYF50
I know those you are talking about, i swear i could read a book by those bright lights alone. but the AV40 is nothing like that, the light is quite dim. cant find a single thing on my table in the dark now.
and yes, i have them. loving every moment of music now.
bawkshish 1 year ago
@bawkshish
that's great to know. thx for your help. I will definitely consider picking these up sometime during the beginning of October ; )
regarding music. How well does it handle bass? It's not too distorted or sloppy tho, right? I like good impact/quality and want to play at slightly high volume without it sounding bad. I also wondering if these speakers would be good for all rounder as well; for rock, metal, electronica, hip-hop, drum and bass, vocals, etc...
thx for your help man :P
BIGDADDYF50 1 year ago
@BIGDADDYF50
they don't bloat, or distort or do anything of that sort. The crossover does a wonderful job of cutting down the unwanted frequencies and everything from 85 Hz to 20 kHz is rendered quite nicely. It takes a bit of getting used to at first though, because all the deep low rambles i heard through a headphone have gone missing. But everything else is there. I'm not much of a hip hopper though, but right now the scene of yellow submarine came alive in front of me with all its drama.
bawkshish 1 year ago
@bawkshish
It does all kind of rock material wonderfully, as well as metal, electronica, drum and bass, jazz, classical et al. dont know hip hop. Lil Wayne sounded quite sharp.. But Drake sounded nice.

how is the bass is it like you can hear it in the hole house ? :D
sykkeloli 1 year ago
@sykkeloli no the bass on these won't rattle walls, it's a clean warm bass, not thumping.
LastStopReviews 1 year ago
@sykkeloli
It really does thump the walls just to warn you. Even without the bass boost the bass is insanely high. I personally have an EQ which cuts the bass quite a lot. Although these speakers sound really great for casual listening, I wouldn't recommend it for studio work just because of the bass
rodderz57 1 year ago
Hey man, you bought this speakers today ( also based on reviews ), but I have a major problem, for some reason those bastards won't power up. Did you have any problem with that ?
ilcool90 1 year ago
@ilcool90 no i did not have any issues with them powering on. I'd say if you know your outlet is working and they still won't power on return them and get a working set.

@ilcool90 i bought them today and i have the same exact problem

ok someone please help me out, m audio av40's or should i get the harmon kardon soundsticks ii? i dont really care about the design im just more intrested in sound quality or should i go for something else?
thorfoxxx 1 year ago
@thorfoxxx If you want to use them strictly for music, AV40s. For anything with heavy bass, gaming, movies, you'll benefit from the sub with the soundsticks, although i'd suggest the Logitech Z-2300 over the soundsticks.

@thorfoxxx i don't know if have got anything yet, but i was recently looking into the sound sticks, and i saw a lot of cases of the sub breaking.
TheTechFish 1 year ago
I own these speakers. They are absolutely fantastic for the price. Placement and environment do factor into how they will sound, so keep that in mind. They sound especially nice in a small room or office. Buy them!!!

@intoxLongboarding he said that he would have gladly paid 250 for them, meaning that its a good deal for 150 and that they sound like speakers in the 250 range

I suggest Klipsch ProMedia 2.1.

MacMike1000 1 year ago

@dragonstyle79 well i have them to...and i think the same more bass in the right speekers....other than that there fine.

I switched from computer speakers to M-Audio BX5A with a KRK10S sub. I also bypassed my macs internal soundcard in favor for an M-Audio Firewire DAC. It sounds great.
You should check out the BX5A's or even the BX8A's and look at a studio sub. Studio monitors sound so much better when there's a sub to complement the low end freq.

whats the different between the m-audio studiophile av-40 and m-audio studiophile av-30 ?
NanzooMusic 1 year ago
@NanzooMusic the 40 r just wayy better dont waste money on the 30
DrakeakaDrizzyfan123 1 year ago
@NanzooMusic The Power wattage difference. Take the AV-30 for example, it seperates into 15 watts per channel (speaker). The Av-40s obviously have more power, so basically one speaker is louder than the other. Hope this helps!

I know these are monitor speakers but are they good enough for general music listening, games, movies etc ?
I have a pair of Logitech Z10s at the moment but im considering either these or the Yamaha HS50s
help!!!
SmokestackLightnin79 1 year ago
@SmokestackLightnin79 for games I'd definitely suggest a 2.1 system. For music they are fantastic, but anything that you really want overpowering bass on, get something that has the dedicated subwoofer.
For my gaming and movie watching I have a set of the Logitech Z2300 hooked up to my xbox 360 and I couldn't be happier with them. Nice thing is they are about in the same price range.

stick with your logitech z10's mate .. monitors are more for production .. they play flat sounds where as your z10's wont .... if your litsning to music your better usin two speakers and a sub
nebstahh 1 year ago
@SmokestackLightnin79 wow dude Definetly better to listen music in monitor speakers. Logitech is hifi. THese days we say LoFi! Buy maudioBX5a or something. You can hear the whole music clear. but if you want ot play games only and dont want to listen music mutch better then "LoFi" .... you decide.. Hifi's arebad respond Monitors are Perfect music respond.

I think these (and all active speakers) have one amplifier for each speaker!
As I see on specs av40 have 2x20W amplifiers.
I'm thinking on buying them soon!

@Kapsidis As I recall, only one of the speakers has a built in amplifier, while the second one is just a slave.

how does the bass carry on those? like the low subs frequencies
cripoutloc 2 years ago
the bass is actually pretty limited if you're really wanting to crank up the bass. If you're looking for something with really strong bass presence I will be doing a review in a few weeks over the Logitech Z-2300 2.1 system. The bass on that system is fantastic.
LastStopReviews 2 years ago
I have these and after about 12 months
the volume button began to make dust in the faders type noise and the headphone jack became fussy and would not disengage to speaker mode properly after the headphones were disconnected with only one speaker working, I get the speaker to work by inserting headphone jack in half way and moving about until the speaker works, seems like very bad quality parts used but I guess it reflects in the price. But they do sound really good.

do you use these monitors for studio work or as computer speakers for your itunes?
Review is okay but its hard to judge the sound on a video, does anybody know if there are any other reviews for these studio monitors where they are being reviewed for studio use, i.e. mixing etc?
Thanks
jamieb234 2 years ago
these are great for gaming on your pc or listening to music, they can be used for mixing but I wouldn't recommend them for just mixing, you might want to look into some krk's or above instead.
