Could I post as a response to your wonderful treasure the transcription for piano played by the legendary brazilian-french pianist Anna Stella Schic, who was the greatest interpreter of VL works for piano. He gave her very important advices and teached her the best way to play ALL his works and she was the first pianist who recorded the entire work of him. Also she recorded all works by Gershwin and Mendelssohn either. She studied with Marguerite Long, Lazare-Levy and Villa-Lobos. Thanks!
Segovia only played 2 of all the 12 studies Villa-Lobos wrote for him. Even though, he wrote the preface for the Max-Eschid Edition, praising the quality and value of the studies. The 12 studies are considered the pioneer work for the modern guitar and are widely played in concerts and recorded by several top guitarists. Segovia, as a guitarist, was more inclined to neoclassical repertoire, as he did not play the 4 pieces by Franck Martin also dedicated to him.
claro q esse cara eh o heitor villa-lobos e ele era mto mais do q um violista virtuose era um compositor genial alem de ter uma tequinica impecavel em varios instrumentos inclusive no violao .... qm ja ouviu os estudos pra violão sabe disso!
Villa-Lobos died in 1959 at 72 years old. The pictures were taken in the 30s or 40s. And in fact is Villa himself. But we cannot see who is playing although people down there already said that the guy is probably Yepes.
This was incredibly dissapointing, I've heard rumours of recordings of villa lobos playing his own preludes and studies and I got all excited but found this!
there are other videos with audio of him playing his own works in more than one instrument. search for villa-lobos interpreta villa-lobos. the choro is the best version of the piece i have ever heard, and i heard them all. it's not mystifying talk, i really think so.
Images are of villa lobos, but anyone can see he's not actually playin the prelude in the video... the guitarist playin is yepes and u see him in the last few seconds where he's actually playin the prelude.
You completely rigth, the sound is an old recorded track from the second prelude made by Narciso Yepes, Villa Lobos was a genius of course but never such virtuose clear and speedy scale.
The person playing the music is Narcisso Yepes. It's from an old D.G. record os villa Lobos Etudes releasedin the late seventies. The images are all of Villa Lobos himself playing guitar. Nice editing job by the way.
I am agree that there is few versions, and I think this is not a very dificult song, it flows very well at the time you performance it, remember that Villa-Lobos used to compose on the guitar not in the paper! I used to play it even I am amateur, Best Regards.
They're up there. And besides, they're some of the greatest etudes regardless of difficulty, there's just so much music there. You can do a lot with them.
Interesting. I play piano as well, but I find it difficult with nails. I have a strange right-hand position. I'd like to know more about what you've done with it. PM if you can.
Sorry but it's not Villa-Lobos who's playing his Prelude No.2. There's no real link betwen the sounds we listen and the fingering that we see in the film. Villa-Lobos was certainely a guitar virtuoso but the performance presented here is that of the Spanish guitarist Narciso Yepes.
Heightor (villa lobos) wrote some great stuff. He was good friends with Segovia and Villa Lobos wrote special pieice sust for him. As good as Segovia was, there were some estudios (studies)that Lobos wrote that Segovia gould not play. he also wrote some insane piano stuff.
Questo è Narciso Yepes che suona....This is Narciso Yepes performing...

what567 5 years ago
Actually yes he was :((
what567 5 years ago
yes, he was....and he played the cello, and the piano with much virtuosity!
Listen to his Etudes for Guitar...He could play them all...and that's some of the most difficult music in the Repertory.
dougfreshinite 5 years ago
I corrected myself.
His etudes aren't easy, but they are nowhere near being the most difficult pieces in guitar rep.
what567 5 years ago
Etude #2 is up there. There are very few versions out there and you can bet they required several takes in the studio to get right.

Question... He had his nails grown out for the guitar? How was he able to play piano with proper hand position? This is interesting.

I have long nails and I can still play piano properly.

I have long nails and I can still play piano properly.
what567 5 years ago
But how long are your nails? And surely you cannot play with a curved-finger style. You must use similar hand positions to Horowitz?
sab3156 5 years ago
My nails generally do not go more than a millimeter over my fingertips, and yes, I do use a curved finger style.
