I watched this movie with my mom when I was a teenager. I so loved it that I never forgot it. Nelson was so handsome and what a baritone. She was a beautiful singer. They looked at each other as though they were really in love.. I hope they are somewhere together singing through eternity.
Thank you for reducing me to tears. MacDonald was one of the most beautiful woman ever with a lovely voice, fine technique and truthful acting ability . Call me an old sentimentalist but I simply find this so genuinely moving and it is incredibly sad that this 'spirit' has almost entirely vanished from our world. At least these silver-screen ghosts, prove that there were once giants around.
Ah....nothing like spending the sunday going through old movie songs for your mum on the you tube. My mum can remember every singer/actor's name and the lyrics to all the songs!! amazing. Great music ! My mum didn't sing lullabies, she sang these songs! so they really remind me of my childhood.
They are (were?) available on tape. I knew an old woman who had the entire collection on the old Sony Beta Max, and had them converted to VHS. Tragically, after she died, no one was interested in them and they probably hit the trash.
Those were the days where true Romance was still alive and believed in . I was not born yet but it took me by storm in the 60s when I was a child and still now they put tears in my eyes. I wish they would spend the energy to remake them in color with better sound DVD versions.
My mom loved these two. She would go to see them in the movies with her own mom. During her last years in the nursing home, I got my hands on as many of their films as I could to play them for her. This is my favorite and I would sing it to her, much to her delight.. Thanks.
Jeanette Macdonald was one of the most beautiful and talented actresses of all time. She had a superb soprano voice and was quite emotive in her acting style.
Love it love it love it...They are amazing I just wish I could get all their movies.....Think I will start up a crusade and try and get some company to put them on DVD....Thanks for letting us share your movie.
I sang this for my beloved girlfriend over the telephone one afternoon and she was in tears halfway through, but little did I know she had a recording feature on her cellphone...
When her darling Mother and Grandmother listened to this private concert of mine, they instantly approved of me :)

Nobody could sing like Jeanette and Nelson. This is my favorite of all their movies together. Beautiful music and so romantic. They just don't make them like
Alas, Jeanette Mc Donald and Nelson Eddy alive and well on the silver Screen of Youtube. A site that was probably started for kids, but us old farts have made our prenence known with gems like this. Romance, beauty, great songs and spectacular voices. This is what the world was all about back in the day. How sweet it was. Too bad our kids will never know it. Enjoy everybody.
I think it very important to pass these things on to our kids so they do not forget them. I have three teenage daughters and I have made sure they know who Nelson Eddy and Jeanette Mc Donald are. It would be a shame for such beauty to be lost. :)
I wholeheartedly endorse your viewpoint. There are so many fine actors whose films are rarely shown to a mass audience. I'm so appreciative of YouTube and other video Web sites where we can see them (at least in part) for the first time or a revisit.
from a time when dialogue, eye contact, and music meant so much than now. Though, today's talents are gifted. There will never be another Nelson Eddy and Jeanette Mac Donald.
I have concerts and films of Nelson Eddy, Jeanette MacDonald, , Mario Del Monaco, Franco Corelli, Caruso, Alfredo Kraus, tagliavinni, Gigli, Luis Mariano, and many others, interested write to me
Eddy Nelson and Jeanette McDonald were in their souls actually literal TWIN FLAMES in love; that's why their singing of love rang SO true and deep with their fans. We all have a twin flame or other half; when God created us as balls of living fire, He split us into both male & female halves; since then, we have tragically, as the Famed Love Birds' movies goes, in the matter universe, we lost touch with our other self. In this New Age, we are meant to reunite once again as ONE and find TRUE love.
This wpmderful duet introduced me for the first time -- I think -- to the word 'sweetheart'. Needless to say, at a Roy Rogers and Hoppalong Cassidy-age, such words were for only for sissies. That's why, unlike Autry and Rogers, Hoppy was the best! He never kissed any mushy girls... Viva Hoppy!
Setting the record straight-Jeanette MacDonald International Fan club was NOT started in 1937 by Clara Rhoades. The club was started in the Fall of 1938 by Canadian Mary Miller.Clara became a member in the Fall of 1949 and the 5th President in 1962.The club is in Limbo the past 8 yrs.Just wish someone would take over and get it going,to keep lovely Jeanette's name alive.
I'm just beginning to get into Jeanette and Nelson. It's so sad reading about their real life story. I think this is the film where in real life they had split up and jeanette got really emotional during this scene. their love for each other really comes through. You can't beat the classics! ^_^
enlightenment depicts that we cherish all for their individual pertinent roles and as such deem it unnecessary to demean the role of another. Im 20 and I watched this whole movie on TCM last night for the first time in a long time and I remembered (no pun intended) how wonderful it is. It's incredibly sad that gems like this and other classic films will probably never be made again because today's audience likes gorry horror films and Will Ferrill stupidity. I also talk to film majors who have no idea who Mac and Eddy are. It's very sad and even scary that we have no sence of history, taste, or tradition in this country.
I totaly agree with you. I am a major classic film fan myself. I like nothing better than to sit and talk about the actors of days gone by. Each film had a story to tell.
I first watched this amazing mystical couple when a wee lad in Ireland and fell in love with the harmony they depicted and now I am falling in love all over again each time I hear their voices. It is wicked being a romantic, a hopeless one at that lol. ah well long live romance and the magic of voices like Jeanette and Nelson. Tears flow every time I hear her sing indian love call in Rose Marie....... ahhhhhhhhhh oh sweet mystery
Well, I have never seen this movie, but again, adding it to my queue, as now I don't know if I've seen the end, or if something works out for the sweethearts. SIGH. I'm refusing to read comments, too. No spoilers!
I won't spoil your enjoyment when you finally are able to see Jeanette and Nelson in MAYTIME (MGM 1937). My favorite film, bar none. Its a glorious film with gorgeous sets, costumes and heavenly music. Was originally to be made in color but footage was scrapped and story changed to what is shown in the 1937 film.
I have loved Nelson & Jeannette almost as long as I've loved Fred and Ginger (almost 50 years!) Thank you so much for making these greats part of today's technology; I do my email while listening to these "sweethearts".

Awesome! That is my favorite scene THANKS! John Barrymore was outstanding and showed why he was such a great actor. I've got 6 of their movies on VHS. Maytime I bought off Amazon as well as their CD. Greatest duo ever - in my humble opinion.
lucky to have their movies, they really should re-issue them on dvd. I became a fan when I was 14, and later found out my grandmother had liked them :P guess its in the genes lol
Thank you for this delightful surprise. It is my favorite film of theirs. I am also glad to see I am not the only one of my age group to be a fan of theirs. (I'm 56)
I like your vid clip and I've rated it as awesome. I've done another video clip on some old cigarette cards of 1930's movie stars, including: Jeanette MacDonald, Bing Crosby, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Clark Gable, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo,Johnny Weismuller, Gary Cooper and Carole Lombard.
I have always loved this film and every one they made together have them all on old vhs only hope they will make them on dvd one day so I can get them again.breaks my heart to watch every time even at my age 53 it gets to me.wish I had met them both.
I agree, I first caught them when they were showing a sunday matinee on the bbc, i was 14 at the time, years later my mother told me that my grandmother had been a big fan of them (as they were about in her day) I was pleased to know something good had been passed down in the genes :P lol
Utterly magnificent ! Loved this film for many years.
I had it on tape once. It was made years before I was born but I saw it with my Mother at the local cinema in the late 1950's and remember asking her what was wrong with the lady at the end in the last scene of the film. I will not spoil it for those who do not know.
I can only suggest see or buy the film for pure Hollywood magic. They really cannot make them like this anymore !
I HAVE THEIR MOVIES ON DVDS.......I TRANSFERRED THEM FROM TAPES

I like your vid clip and I've rated it as awesome. I've done another video clip on some old cigarette cards of 1930's movie stars, including: Jeanette MacDonald, Bing Crosby, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Clark Gable, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo,Johnny Weismuller, Gary Cooper and Carole Lombard.

Not that I've noticed (believe me I've looked).
Can someone get Ted Turner to release them? He's released loads of other stuff from the MGM archives.
What I wouldn't give to hear those voices in remastered sound.

TMC shows all the MacEddy films frequently.

I'm in the UK so not so lucky here.
I've got some films from TV but they're no where near not up to DVD quality. Look what a bit of tlc has done to other films of this era.
Surely the demand, at least in the US is sufficient? I don't mind importing if I have to.

Yes it is Maytime. It is one of those films you just have to watch all the way through. Sounds daft I know !
Apparently part of it was originally shot in Technicolor in 1936 with some different members of cast
and with the death of the producer Irving Thalberg it was abandoned and then re-shot in monchrome as it was cheaper to make.
The part of Archipenko was originally played by Frank Morgan and then by Herman Bing - who committed suicide some years later by shooting himself.

Thank you.
