I m not sure of al of the subs, but if you look atlas on Amtraks website, It is th eroute which the Metor travels. I know that NS interchanges in Savannah, You might see it there. The Auto train makes a midnight stop in Florence,SC to service and refuel. Dont know if it still stops there. Nontheless, the autotrain exclusivele runs on CSX line formerly the Atlantic Coast Line. The only two places to see it in daylight is Jacksonville and Richmond.
The max speed for the Autotrain is 72 MPH. They travel at 70. Usually, they reach that speed in areas between city. I rode it a few years ago. We we're 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Folkston has a speed restriction of 50 MPH. Once it leaves North , its full throttle.
whats the 50 mph speed restriction through folkston Ga for anyway? and what subs do most of the amtrak's run on through town? and how far is the NS from there?
You know whats really deceptive, is the fact that you see both the star and the meteor with 2 engines all the time. Makes you think that the second engine is needed because 1 engine isnt powerful enough. but yet you see the autotrain always with two engines pullin in excess of 50 cars half being autocarriers at 70MPH. It's just that I always see the Meteor and Star all the time. Sometimes they come in with 3 engines with one on fire in the smokestack.
They did this before only thing is it wasn't owned by Amtrak it was the Orginal Auto Train company. They ran a service from Sanford to Kentucky, but they ran into sever derailments and finanicial problem, which left the Auto Train bankrupt and Amtrak stepped in and took over the entire service 18 months later.
coast starlight11 the auto train does not have a luggage car. You leave your luggage in your car. You only take your OVER NIGHT luggage in a small carry on. :) DON'T FORGET YOUR TOOTH BRUSH! LOL (No I did not do that.) :b :o :) :( ha ha ha

Superb video of a great train. Really long! Almost twice as many autoracks as Superliners, probably coz of capacity. I went on the Autotrain 10 years ago in May 1998! Awesome K5LA too!
That thing I said about the autoracks was just a guess of mine, but do notice that the number of Superliners seems to stay the same. But I hope more people take interest in riding trains.
