I am certainly no expert...but this plane looks severely underpowered. It's laboring on take-off, and could barely do a barrel roll without losing half it's altitude.
I honestly thought I was looking at a full-scale aircraft. You'll usually see details like flying-wires, UHF antennas and rivets, but rarely do you see trim-tabs on the control surfaces!!!! :O Absolutely Astounding!
The pilot of this aircraft was non other than Andreus Luthi, 5 time F4C world champion. Andreus was also Swiss Acrobatic champion before turning his many talents to scale building. His 4 point roll was certainly nothing to fear, I have never ever seen him do anything risky while doing a maiden with another pilots aircraft...under control at all times.
This is a shame and I empathize with the builder. That was one beautiful model! Is there a post-mortem yet? Lots of models crash (some say they all do!,) but not many burn
That narrator sounds as though he is as high as a kite. What a dickhead. Maybe you should listen to yourself!! Pilot almost got it way wrong at 1:41 with his slow roll, almost belly panned it. Not enough nose up pitch prior to commencing roll and/or. Lucky, but what a pity, a real beautiful plane. At least no one was hurt or killed as fire in mid flight could have caused full control failure ............. not a nice thought.
@davidsdickinson Wow-I knew there was something very familiar about the aircraft, and if you ever flew in a Beech , the instrument panel and the seats are very similar. Great observation David!
Thank you RCFLYER, I love the hobby,as we all do, but remember there is a "date" stamped in the fuselage of every aircraft you build, and when the date comes due.....you know the rest. Appreciate your comment.
Truly remarkable build! Looked like it was powered to be very scale as far as the power to weight but oh man, what a shame it had to end like that! I almost cried when I lost my GP Lancair a year ago to wing failure, I can't imagine what it would feel like to lose something so painstakingly built and expensive as this! Well, I'm sure the guy isn't hurting as far as money is concerned...what do you think?
That's pretty sad...i'd have to give up the hobby if that were my plane. I hope he had insurance, if you can even get it for an RC plane. I'll bet that thing costs as much a s a used single engine real plane like a cessna 150/152.
Well, THAT does it... From now on, I'm taking a small fire extinguisher to the air field... (of course, that won't help much if it catches flames in flight and falls to the earth like a meteor). It would be a great night-time show, though.
The Beech Model 17 has to be one of the all-time classic designs in aviation. I love what the builder did with this model & the skill with which it was flown. Very scale-like. "Shame" concerning its demise is a real understatement.
(I must say that even though this is one of the better video clips out there, the narrator makes me feel like I'm in kindergarten class at story-time. Most of us are adults, Sir. Speaking to us as such would greatly enhance the enjoyability of your posting).
And well worth it. Thanks again. My comments were strictly for the narrator & now I know you & he are different people. I've played this several times & now know just where to turn the volume up or off. That engine does sound sweet.

I couldn't think of anything more cool than my rc plane catching on fire in flight, as long as only the plane was ruined.

another example of not knowing proper techniques. landing again porpoising and then not going positive pressure on the gear.

I used to restore these, and when you do a barrel roll in one of these at 2.5 G's, you never forget it.
This is and will alway be my favorite ship design.
Beautiful to scale paint as I did as well restoring them.
Truly unreal, when every field has extinguishers.
Maybe fuel leak getting to hot exhaust.
What a shame.
You must make another one.

Nice vid and nice airplane. Not to nitpick but the opening title slide should read Staggerwing Beech (not beach). Otherwise very nice post.

You are correct Sir--It's spelled like the Gum--not where you go to swim--sorry about that!

@HabuBeemer its a beachcraft staggerwing they just shortened beachcraft (manufacturer) to beach for the title the model is staggerwing

Yes-I agree on the narrators comments-unfortunately, I had no control of that-sorry.
I did though, want to post the beautiful Staggerwing to let modelers see the detail that went into the build.
