Wow! This was really nice.. I was also expecting to see How to actually do a Walk Animation. Specially the number of frames involved with each movement. Eg: When you say 40 frame, how are they divided in each walk cycle (not sure if I am explaining it right) I hope you got my question.. wil now check out ur other videos :)
2- Your method would probably be faster and easier in a NLE like Sony Vegas Pro, Premiere Pro, the freeware Wax 2.0 or the newly open sourced Lightwave. Same idea, but you'd use a single mask and animate the shape and size of that mask using key-frames.
@Honestinwilkesbarre 1- Do you have a resource available that could explain what you mean by "tie-downs" and how to use them? 2- I don't have Sony Vegas Pro, the freeware Wax 2.0 or the newly open sourced Lightwave. I have Premiere CS3, but it runs REALLY slow on my 5-year-old PC so I use the methods I've developed for myself and made this video about 3 years ago to explain the process to anyone who might find it useful.
Fantastic ! I thought I had nerves of steel when I built a 1/24 scale car model and added spark plug wires, installed grain of wheat light bulbs to the interior, and the head lights, and added flocking to simulate real carpet. That was kids play compared to this.I'm 48 and no longer have the patience,or time like I did when I was younger,working/managing a hobbyshop.Their are very few people in the world who know how to do this.
Sorry for being a late-comer, but I just found your site and watched this video. Nice work, Hutt, and thanks. I was curious how animation was done and you did a good job explaining it! Obviously you have made a TON of videos, and I'll watch more another day. Cool work and keep going!
too much work. Just use a chroma key color the stand blue or green depending on the chroma key background you are using. Shoot the walk cycle and then paste the background in.
@Darius12235 I tried that a few times. I can never light it correctly so that stand is purely key colored. I never said you HAVE to do it this way. If you don't like this technique, don't do it. Personally, I like having my characters and environments shot together in a "practical" way as there is no discrepency in the lighting.
Using Photoshop, you can do it one of two ways: click "file", then "place", then select the image you want to lay over the first. Or, click "file" then "import" and lay the image on top of your background.
Thanks for the how to videos, I was wondering how another guy got his figures (batman and joker) to dance.. well I am guessing this is the method.. I just bought some figures and considering the cost..plan to animate them.. I just completed my first stop animation about an hour ago..which is buzz lightyear waving .. I haven't uploaded it because it is only 2 seconds worth...any way thanks.
Damn....I need photoshop....do you know where I can get it cheap?? Which Photoshop do you use? I've been using MSpaint and actually drawing in what I've deleted this whole time!! THAT'S time consuming.
Sorry PhotoShop is not cheap, no matter where you buy it. (I got my copies through school and used student loan money to pay for them!) I use version CS3.
I like your stop motion ideas hutt they are brilliant. But I have been triying to make videos with the clear footstand but if they are too troublesome I will remember to watch this again~!
This is extremely helpful, sir. I'm writing a few stories to make stop motion films out of so this footage is great. Your film looks very clean and natural. Thanks, once again!
Not really. And even if you could, it would be kind of counter productive on the smaller figures. Honestly, I haven't done too much with the 3.5" guys, so I'm not sure what the best techniques are for them.
pretty good commentary, I always dred the walk cycle as I use many figures of varying scales, I always end up using the clone stamp which is time consuming as well as I always end up doing around at least 100 frames, for phoeneme and physical animation
Oh, forgot to add, could yoi make a tutorial of how to position the figures with the stand too, and go deeper about where to put the stand and show how to do the animation?
originally, this tutorial was like 20 minutes, and I included information about how to shoot the actual walk cycle. There is a trick to shooting while using a stand. That may be the subject of my next tutorial.
thanks mate but i dont use photoshop, time to get G.I.M.P.started up
