This is way up there in the list of the best Fry and Laurie sketches. It's also the only time I can think that they splattered anybody with anything for a laugh.
So, the Brits now say "TV" instead of "telly" and "blooper" instead of "clanger"? I would curse the spreading pervasiveness of American English, except I'm a Yank myself.
We've always used both "TV" and "telly" down my way.
Thanks partly to Denis Norden's: 'It'll be Alright on the Night', the word "blooper" has been used here since the seventies, but is also said as a harmless tongue-in-cheek piss-take of Americans. I don't know anyone who would say "clanger" unless they were referring to 'The Clangers' (<--- an old child's TV programme).
I'm watching this for the 5th time in a row, and I think I'm gonna spill some guts, just like that poor newsreader - but of laughing. 'Which is nice, which is nice.' xDDDDD
Still one of the finest comedic moments on British television. I've seen it over 30 times and it still makes me laugh. The initial surprise of the blood-splat but Stephen laughing whilst hitting the sofa arm then just shouting the last laughter is sublime. Awesome post, thanks.
I loved ABOFAL, but the last season was not half as good as the rest: there were some good sketches in it, but (in most cases) the guest stars did not add anything to the show.
I agree. I actually hated the fact F and L are not the only actors doing the sketches. The season 4 episodes were also gaining some structure (the opening, the ending) although I think there is no structure needed in a sketch show. :-)
Anyway, I loved ABOFAL as well. Is there anything on the same level nowadays?
Well, nowadays (with the exception of maybe French and Saunders), a lot of funny sketch shows that start out good, do not succeed in maintaining their level. Catherine Tate and little Britain were more of the same after 1/2 seasons.
In my opinion, besides French and Saunders and of course Monty Python, Fry and Laurie is one of the all time best sketch shows.
no it isn't...this was years before matt and david, they took this from them...i love matt and david but they are doing what they are doing because of shows like this and they know that
I never said they wrote it , i was just comparing them to stephen and Hugh... i know that this was way before them. all i was saying was that it reminded me of something they'd do. i was NOT trying to say that they compied Matt and David. It Was NOT a negative comment, I luv Stephen and Hugh... <3

If I recall correctly, at the beginning of this episode, Hugh gets struck on the head by a falling studio lamp.
