Jussi seemed to put more emotion into the Swedish language songs than almost anything else he performed. I love to use these as background music, or just to relax and enjoy one of the most beautiful voice of this or any other century.
@allahpower777 I think you wrote a typo, but indeed this singer was a god and a manifestation of one in his voice and heart that gave through the singing..
Another exquisit treasure from my favorite tenor, Jussi. I have this recording and listen to it often. There have been many great tenors, but non quite like Björling.

The more I listen to Bjorling the more I like. He interprets and sings as no one else could. Pavarotti was right to imitate him. Thanks for the verses in Swedish. We can appreciate Bjorling even more singing in his own native language.
I just can´t translate this poem! (I would have to be a poet myself). But the word "älska" (the top note of the song) means "love" (the verb) - which the poet thinks is the best life can offer! (who doesn´t?)
I wish you non-Swedes could understand this BEAUTIFUL poem by the Finnish poet Josef Julius Wecksell. I´m sitting here crying! J.J. belonged to the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland - just like Sibelius (and my mother.) He lived in the 19th century and wrote WONDERFUL stuff before ending up in a lunatic asylum! (I think he was only 25). Sibelius has set music to several of his poems. Another one is "Was it a dream?"
Han som skrev dessa verser är ganska så hyllad inom vissa kretser och rätteligen så. Stället var visst Åbo. Men det var det om det.

Tjatigt att återupprepa det. Blir inte skönare. Hur skolar man såna sångare???

I believe Pavarotti was wrong to imitate him, imitating anyone, even perfection, as Bjoerling is, it's simply imitation, be yourself.

At the foot of its beams
she stands, adoring,
and kisses it in deep love
and melts into a teardrop.
Oh beautiful fate, to love
the highest that life has to offer,
to sparkle in its sunshine
and die when it smiles most beautifully.
(Thanx to the Lied and Art Song Texts Page)

Oops--inadvertently omitted the heading, which, obviously, should have said, "English translation, part 2:"

English translation, part 1:
There on the driven snow
glitters a diamond so bright.
Never was there a tear, a pearl,
that sparkled more brilliantly.
Out of a secret longing
she shines with heavenly radience:
she gazes at the sun,
where it rises in its beauty.

Swedish lyrics, part 2:
Vid foten av dess stråle
tillbedjande hon står
och kysser den i kärlek
och smälter i en tår.
O, sköna lott att älska
det högsta livet ter,
att stråla i dess solblick
och dö, när skönst den ler!
schlesmail 4 years ago
Swedish lyrics, part 1:
På drivans snö där glimmar
en diamant så klar.
Ej fanns en tår, en pärla,
som högre skimrat har.
Utav en hemlig längtan
hon blänker himmelskt så:
hon blickar emot solen,
där skön den ses uppgå.

I've added the translation that was provided by EMI in the CD booklet...I agree that it's absolutely amazing.
