  • If there was a global poll taken on this we'd see that over 90% of people would be against this.

  • Basically the beginning of 3D programming...what was previously only done in computers, in virtual worlds. I HATE this idea. It is so easy to convert this into something that is diabolical since there are already so many models that can be corrupted to the detriment of humans. We can't afford to have one city go down temporarily (like we've seen with computer networks) because some nut acted without conscience

  • Anyway God will destroy America and the communists for rebelliosn against Him.

  • @DonMega187 still the study for how life* originally came to be is in progress, but these scientists found probably more sure method. they explain bit more in "the cell" bbc documentary series, especially in the last part about possible theories split apart, but in nature the process may have taken thousands of years for all the possible aminoacids to develop it may not be possible to ever conclusively show it anywhere else except simulating the conditions for prooving the concepts itself

  • This is amazing, wouldn't that be astounding if we were able to create, say, dog-sized life forms!? That would be such an accomplishment!!!

  • "now if he actually created a cell from something that is inorganic then that would be something"

Life, by definition, is a self replicating ORGANIC polymer, with a metabolism, you moron!! -Even If you believe "God did it" he had to use organic material!! Organic compounds exist everywhere that are not life- Even in outer space! Are you suggesting that these compounds in the rest of the universe actually are life too??

    Sheesh!!

  • wow.. that is a pretty stunning achievement. Very exciting stuff. I think what is mind bending is the deep level of complexity for even the most basic bits of life.

    Amazing work!

  • Well god, how do you like that?

  • @JayDee98765 i was looking for these type of comments, wired.com/wiredscience/2010/05/scientists-create-first-self-replicating-synthetic-life/ craig injected info into something that was already organic, craig used cells, he didnt create life, he just changed cells, now if he actually created a cell from something that is inorganic then that would be something

  • @sepirocth Hey Einstein, what's organic and inorganic? There is no set definition, if you don't understand the science don't pretend to. I'm an engineer, bye.

  • @JayDee98765 i guess as an engineer you are so smart that you dont know what a dictionary even is. let me help you with that "Inorganic compounds have traditionally been considered to be of inanimate, non-biological origin.[1] In contrast, organic compounds have an explicit biological origin"

  • @sepirocth I'm a bio engineer, are you really trying to sound smart to me? Seriously? Can't you do something else with your time? Perhaps read a book? Even a dictionary maybe? No? Okay, well i'll say it again, perhaps understand it this time > bye.

  • @JayDee98765 haha your just mad because he you know i showed you the truth, craig didnt create life he used cells something that was alive to begin with, he injected info and changed the behavior of the cell, u are proof of romans 1:22. i will leave you alone now, have a great day and may God bless you

  • @sepirocth lol laters :-)

  • @JayDee98765 Man can engineer molecules! It shows how it takes INTELLIGENCE in controlled laboratory conditions to mimic, plagiarize a cell's Design!! Scientists COPY a limited set of genetic sequences with synthesizing machines and Templates!! They dont create anything!!!!

Its all Man made Synthetic biology!!!! and it has nothing to do with the origin of life!!!! Wake up atheist MORONS!!

  • @5tonyvvvv lol go pray for some good luck douche bag.

  • This team did in 15 years what took nature several billion years in steamy mud pits. I wonder what that first cell was like? The one we all eventually evolved from.

  • And this STILL won't shut the creationists the hell up!!

  • @Tobytrim he DESIGNED it, didn't he? It didn't appear out of nowhere!

  • @OrganicKing "he DESIGNED it, didn't he? It didn't appear out of nowhere"

Ha ha!! Evidence won't ever get anywhere with you guys will it?!

The first "living"matter didn't appear out of nowhere either, As the religious claim it did - fully formed!!.

This shows that the ingredients for life pre-exists, and under the right permutations, which demonstrably CAN acrete, "life" can happen.

Or are you saying that "God" needed pre-existing material for his design too? If so, who made that?

  • @Tobytrim exactly the comment i was looking for, wired.com/wiredscience/2010/05/scientists-create-first-self-replicating-synthetic-life/ craig injected info into something that was already organic, craig used cells, he didnt create life, he just changed cells, now if he actually created a cell from something that is inorganic then that would be something

  • @sepirocth Ha ha!!- He created a chain molecule which is life, and demonstrated it could interact with existing life, and you are not satisfied, apparently, till they magically conjure up something which nature couldn't do in less than a couple of billion yearsII Can you present some proof that the "Genesis god" has the power to do that?? Science shows he can't!

    You characters are a joke!!

  • this new science break through should prove useful if we do a massive space travel for human survival during our sun's dying process, resistance to any desease, able to breath in any hostile environment smarter, and longer life span nice!!!.

  • 11:50, codeception if you will.

  • What's the reason for encoding the organism's website in its genetic code?

  • @macatbongblues money baby, money and ego

  • why didnt they make the cell? cause they couldnt....

  • @TheRogueMonk the entire cell

  • @TheRogueMonk They'll get there.

  • @adi87tya i know... it would be strange if we didnt.. considering the cards on the table..

next step will probably be to make ac ell that can execute the dna that we want..

here is the problem though.. it might not work but it might not even be needed...

there is no gurante that it is possible to make a cell that can execute any dna.. for not any dna might produce something either.

so basically if htey can mass produce already they wont need to redisgn a cell synthetically.. other then dna

  • I suspect that there are very few people, even among scientificly literate people, who understand the significance of this accomplishment. I believe this is the first step toward human imortality.

  • He created this synthetic life with material that was already created by God.

  • @finch4100 LOLLLLLOOOLLLLOOLLOOLL FOR BLEEP SAKE STOP MY RIBS HURT LOLLOLO

  • how does this only have 123k views?!

  • its actually not that bad spending your life in a lab, as long as you get music.

  • Comment removed

  • the question was planted.

  • @neurel111 im sure the basic questions were anticipated, though this question probably wasnt as he spent his life or so doing this hed have enough information to say this.

  • Does anyone watching this realize they dumbed a shit load of thesr in the gulf of mexico and is now increasing the methane output of those areas due to the oil spill? They plan to put these in vaccines now.... this isnt a good thing

  • @adealin3 agreed , this is pure Frankenstein and the first question is why ? They expend so much energy poisoning the life God created, what in hells name do they want this shit for ?

Dont be fooled! Nobody has "created" life they have simply manipulated existing life, something lower than a worm speaks volumes.

  • @stiffex Creating Bio-Fuels for our vehicular get off of Foreign Oil,high protein food to end world hunger and really thousands of other things.Poisoning it? if its wrong why wont your all mighty god stop it?

  • @stiffex Oh no no no you see God didn't make us and this is how we prove that, slowly but surely. This is just the start! Remember when you Christians thought spitting on someone's wound would heal it? This is kinda like that only without being really dumb

  • Humans have like 70 trillion cells. Goodjob replicating 1/70,000,000,000,000

  • @casualthug07 He's not trying to replicate all human cells or humans for that matter idiot. It isn't practical.

  • @casualthug07 They don't replicate a human cell. and if they did replicate one type of human cells, it would be more than just 1/70 000 000 000 000 as we have alot of duplicates in those 70 trillion.

  • @casualthug07 Between making a cell from scratch and a stupid comment in youtube,I would prefer to make the cell.

  • So you still need a bacterial cell to make a bacterial cell? isn't this just like another DNA recombinant in bactery?

  • It has it's own website encoded in the DNA... awesome.

Okay! That's it! I'm offering ad-space in my DNA. All of my children are guaranteed to be born with birthmarks in the shape of your company symbol. Call 555-1998 for any offers.

  • ill admit i dont understand 95% of this ... but its damn inspirational

  • When will He Get Nobel Prize?

  • @zacinfinite He`ll prolly get a Nobel when he steals someone elses ideas or starts a war.

  • @zacinfinite i am not sure . . they actually made life.. they seem to have altered it

  • @TheRogueMonk recreate life from life.. so he did not create life he found a new way of expressing it

  • @TheRogueMonk ummm but uhh, chemicals are "inorganic"? aren't they? didn't he mention using four chemicals?

  • Comment removed

  • @zacinfinite Man can engineer molecules!

  • @5tonyvvvv

Yes it takes intelligence to design stuff, but when your brain fails to make a distinction between designed things and things that appear to be designed you get yourself into trouble. Before we understood chemistry and physics I am sure there were idiots like you running around talking about all kinds of mythical beings that "designed" snowflakes. Of course calling something designed and quitting is far easier than investigating it and truly understanding it, isn't it?

  • @imigrant00 Its man made Synthetic Chemistry! and it has nothing to do with undirected natural processes and the origin of life! Learn homochirality!

  • @5tonyvvvv

Of course it is "man made", what other animal do you suggest has the capabilities to make it? Of course it doesn't have anything to do with the origin of life, but it brings us one step closer to understanding the life's inner workings. One day when we discover the process and conditions that put together self replicating polymers we'll know for a fact a process and conditions that generate living things. It would also be man made, but it would demonstrate Abiogenesis empirically.

  • @imigrant00 First off Im a former atheist, The closet experiment to natural processes is the Miller experiment which was designed and it still failed abysmally. Chirality through natural processes is a disaster for evolutionists! This is a Fact of Biochemistry! LIFE COMES FROM LIFE!

  • @5tonyvvvv

What does your former atheism have to do with anything? Miller failed which is why we're not celebrating him as the guy who proved Abiogenesis. Kindly point how the existence of a molecule that lacks an internal plane of symmetry is a disaster for Evolution, and the sources for your information. Yes, self-replicating molecules produce more, self-replicating molecules. We are looking for a natural process that produces self-replicating molecules. God did it is not an explanation.

  • @imigrant00 I dont need to be convinced, I see it in lab everyday! So dont try to indoctrinate me back to atheism. Im not saying this is bad chemistry, but Saying natural processes did it is not an explanation either!! What about the homochirality problem?? How would you get all LEFT handed amino acids? There is no demonstrated source for such non-racemic mixture of sugars in any plausible pre-biotic environment.

  • @5tonyvvvv

Theists indoctrinate, atheism is not a doctrine. It is a disbelief in a proposed theistic doctrine. Learn the difference.

No one is saying natural processes did it with any kind of certainty, but we suspect they did, which is why we're looking for the mechanism. The Homochiralic property of amino acids is a field of active research in evolution and is at present poorly understood, but has nothing to do with how self replicating polymers originated. Also creation.com = FAIL

  • @imigrant00 Atheism=FAIL!!

  • @5tonyvvvv

Ha! I didn't believe your former Atheism for one second. Caught you red handed. Do you now see how pretending to know something and instead just reading creation.com makes you look like an idiot? Of course you don't.

    ...can't fix stupid...

  • @imigrant00 And name calling makes you look smart.

  • @5tonyvvvv

You seem to have trouble understanding the English language. I didn't call you any names. I merely explained what reading creationist webshites makes you look like.

  • @imigrant00 Your right You cant fix stupid or stubborn, Learn Homochirality!! Thats not an assumption! Its a Fact of chemistry!!

  • @5tonyvvvv

Evolution is a FACT of Biology. I already explained to you that Homochirality is not the stumbling block your friends at creation.com say that it is and that it is completely unrelated to the search for the mechanism behind Abiogenesis. When scientists don't fully understand something they invest more time and effort in order to understand it. They don't cower with their tail between their legs, cry that its too complicated and say god did it, which sadly is exactly what you do.

  • @imigrant00 Evolution is far from a fact! INFORMATION is a disaster for abiogenesis! Molecules dont self organize, ever! and they never will. and you cant have evolution until you have abiogenesis which is IMPOSSIBLE!!! LIFE COMES FROM LIFE!!!!

  • @5tonyvvvv

    O.o

Please provide an alternative theory that explains all the evidence and has the same predictive potential as Evolution or go back under the rock from which you crawled out of. While you're at it please provide positive evidence of anything supernatural. Also explain where your god came from. Also explain why your god is so often immoral. Maybe once you do these things you will begin to realize how fabricated and silly your god really is. But I would not count on it.

  • @5tonyvvvv google molecular self-assembly

  • @HeywoodJablowem Man can engineer molecules! It shows how it takes INTELLIGENCE in controlled laboratory conditions to mimic, manipulate, plagiarize a cell's Design! Scientists COPY genetic sequences!! They dont create anything!!

Its all Man made Synthetic chemistry! and it has nothing to do with the origin of life!! Homochirality is a disaster for any sort of naturalistic origins! There is no demonstrated source for such non-racemic mixture of sugars in any plausible pre-biotic environment!

  • @5tonyvvvv did you google molecular self-assembly? try google scholar

  • @HeywoodJablowem Yes I did, Like I said man can manipulate conditions in a controlled laboratory atmosphere!! Molecules cant self assemble..LOL gullible atheist! These experiments are not geochemical relevant reactions!! Meaning They would never occur on a primordial earth!!

  • @5tonyvvvv how about wikipedia for "self-assembly"

"Self-assembly is a term used to describe processes in which a disordered system of pre-existing components forms an organized structure or pattern as a consequence of specific, local interactions among the components themselves, without external direction. When the constitutive components are molecules, the process is termed molecular self-assembly."

  • @5tonyvvvv "Important examples of SA in materials science include the formation of molecular crystals, colloids, lipid bilayers, phase-separated polymers, and self-assembled monolayers.[1][2] The folding of polypeptide chains into proteins and the folding of nucleic acids into their functional forms are examples of self-assembled biological structures."

  • @5tonyvvvv what are u talking about? they self-assemble all the time. they may copy original designs but they still create them out of thin air, where there is no life they create life, although quite primitive at the moment still in a form that is not known to exist anywhere except on earth. one lifeform leads to more complex lifeforms, it's all just a chain reaction of developing the techniques and this much progress in such a short time is simply breathtaking. do not underestimate it

  • @imigrant00 You stubbornly refuse to understand Homochirality like most atheists! What else is new!

  • Comment removed

  • so does this mean we can became real xmen?

  • There would be nothing to fix if people would stop ruining everything.

  • @NorthNorth2009 not true. You obviously didn't listen to everything he had to say. He isn't creating stuff for the hell of it. You do realize what this means. They can potentially create any type of cell. They could make a cell that has a selective property against the aids virus, or something like that

  • @dmoneywise Yah right. I hope you don't really believe that.

  • @NorthNorth2009 You hope I don't believe what? You hope that I don't believe that they can make microorganisms that target harmful bacteria and viruses? They obviously have they potential to do that. Are you stupid?

  • @dmoneywise what harmful bacteria and viruses? the ones created by the same money crazed "business people".

  • @NorthNorth2009 You obviously don't know anything about microbiology. I'm not saying I know everything, but you do know that bacteria acquire resistance to antibiotics???? Plasmid transfer through conjugation? Ring a bell? For example enterococcal infections can be dificult to treat now days thanks to resistance entercocci have acquired. Obviously technology like this could be used for bad things I don't deny that. There are some really amazing things you could do also

  • @dmoneywise Because there are those who over do it with the antibacterial agents. Wouldn't you expect them to become resistant. Well you just wait until they will cure any human who isn't a privelaged rich elite.

  • what? make new strains of algae that can capture co2 from atmosphere and make new hydrocarbons to make gas from co2? That sounds pretty cool but wouldnt it just burn off as co2 again after you burn it as gas? @ 17:40

  • @cheesynounou Ohh wow your smarter than Craig? Im just asking....

  • @repapips2004 No i'm not why?

  • @repapips2004 Oh wow ur smarter than Craig? i'm just asking......

  • @cheesynounou "what? make new strains of algae that can capture co2 from atmosphere and make new hydrocarbons to make gas from co2? That sounds pretty cool but wouldnt it just burn off as co2 again after you burn it as gas? @ 17:40"

Do you really need help with this?

Anyways, Co2 is the cause of global warming, Gas gives us combustable chemical to power engines, engines which are widespread in usage. Co2 being reduced is a good thing. Burning material like smoke from cigs and cars makes CO2

  • @iliveon Thanks smart stuff but "Anyways" Isn't a word. You're giving me facts about co2 instead of answering my question. Don't worry, I figured out my answer long time ago and I don't need your facts.

  • @cheesynounou yes and cigs isn't a real world either. And I didn't use a period at the end of my last sentence. And I shouldn't start a sentence with "and." Douchbag. That isn't a complete sentence either< And "<" isn't really a left arrow. Hey you forgot a comma before "but," found after "smart stuff." Stop being an asshat. I didn't mean to offend you and sorry for helping; it seemed like a good idea at first.

  • @cheesynounou True. However I think the point is instead of burning more and more fossil fuels we could reuse what is already there. Instead of accumulating more C02 in the atmosphere, we could keep it at a more steady rate.

  • I love this. Now how long until we can make these synthetic bacteria recycle CO2 into hydrogen? We already have a car made by BMW that can run on hyrdogen.

  • @Newenlightenmentnow Only problem is there is no H in CO2 Biological Fuels will be the best outcome of this for a fuel in cars any ways.

  • @tjinga2u1 Dr. Venter was the one who said that it was possible. Perhaps if its an aquadic organism that uses CO2 and H20, much like green algae. Perhaps it could be programed to be slightly less effiicient and "waste" Hydrogen.

  • chuck norris did this withe one hand

  • Awesome (sarcastic)....you just made this thing and you're already interested in injecting humans with it and releasing it into the wild....a self replicating synthetic cell. You go Dr. Frankenstein! whats next....zombies?

  • @1982patriot I presume that you dont take synthetic medicine? Or go to hospital? Because i can feel your against science.

  • @repapips2004 better check the accuracy of your psychic powers...to the contrary, I love science. Amateur Astronomer myself. If pointing out the need for caution in certain fields of study and research makes me "against science", I'll just have to try not to lose sleep about it. Going to the hospital is not the same as getting injected with a replicating synthetic cell....some odd logic there man. Gotta be careful about unexpected interactions, mutations, ect...'s all I'm sayin' man.

  • Excellent evidence that intelligent information, direction & design is necessary to create life. God & science both win.

  • how do i benefit from this? this might be a breakthrough in longevity and reanimation

  • This is reallt cool, but scary aswell, anyone read brave new world?

  • It looks like Steven Hawking was right, when he implied that there is no need for a god. Heh, we can now do it ourselves. ;O) Science is so cool!

    Katalyzt

  • Science- god 1:0

  • But, does it blend ?

  • perhaps consciousness emerged because order comes before chaos so its not impossible 2 imagine consciousness is the true entity of existence which leads to everything (I'm talking beyond the universe, beyond parallel universes, beyond higher dimensions) consciousness comes first because chaos can't come first, order leads to chaos and consciousness is orderly so u never know perhaps consciousness was the beginning of everything (not talking god or religion) just a scientific opinion.

  • @deanmullen10 You are on to something here. The idea that the universe developed out of consciousness I think is very interesting. Which came first though isn't as important as the acknowledgement that the universe has a consciousness. Maybe, surely, the same consciousness that is shared by you and I, and seperated only, ironically, by the inherent individual perspectives of all living things. Is to perceive the universe, to perceive thyself?

  • @KastleBravo yes and another way we could have seperation is due to the illusion of space-time, matter & enegry, all the production of the true consciousness and consciousness is distributed and spread throughout space-time yet since space-time doesn't really exist and is only a mere illusion we are not truly separated.

  • Would it be unethical to kill this synthetic life?

  • Towards* (damn iPhone)

  • Insane... First step toasted building life from scratch... This is a philosophical problem.

  • I love it

  • Is synthetic life conscious? even in the smallest amount or is it completely artificial?

  • @deanmullen10 It is. There's no such thing as a soul or spirit, we're just matter, that uses matter to create energy, (to move, to think, etc.) by eating, breathing, etc..

It is conscious. I'm sure even computers are conscious.

  • @Roflbrowser so consciousness can be created and destroyed your suggesting? it makes me wonder though if there could be an infinite universe out there then there would be exact atomic copies of me out there, it amazes me because there is nothing to distuingish me from the other me's I am the same person kinda creepy.

  • @deanmullen10 the universe isn't infinite, if you went from the border of the universe, to the other end, you would be running circles and coming back to where you came from every time.

  • @Roflbrowser sorry I meant the multiverse, I'm talking bout string & M-theory, the multiverse suggests an infinite number of parallel universes and in infinity everything comes true, if you haven't heard of it yet it might sound hard 2 believe bt trust me physicists r serious bout this, they wouldnt built "the large hadron collider" the biggest machines in human history if they weren't confident (thats 2 research other universes)

  • Ah, I hope religion disappears soon. In the future it will disappear, when science has cured death it will disappear, but I won't live that long I think. I want to see religion fade away NOW, in MY lifetime! Hehe: )

  • @winterstellar don't worry with genetic engineering perhaps you will live to see religion dissapear :)

  • @deanmullen10 You know, I'm hoping. I saw this expert say that he believes science will be able to reverse aging in some 50 years. So if we stay healthy, maybe we'll just make it. That would be great, hehe. : )

  • @winterstellar I have an idea. We only reverse aging in the non-religious. Besides the religious should be thrilled anyway. They think they're going to party with their all powerful space daddy.

  • Who we are is but a stepping stone to what we can become.

  • so this is how we were made!!!

  • Now that we can and DID build a life form that lives and reproduces without any god, can we finally get rid of religion? God's job description is pretty small at this point. We should fire him since he hasn't been doing his job all these years.

  • they should clone jesus

  • Also, where can the new code be found? (That translates amino acid sequences to the alphabet)

  • Does anyone know where the original publication can be found?

  • 06:36 i meant...

  • 06:43 what did the recepient cell had that ate the synthetic dna? a nucleowhat? Pls aswer i need to know that

  • @LordOfLoad ppl please i really need an answer...

  • @LordOfLoad Nuclease. The ending "ase" refers to an enzyme that breaks something (the root word) down. For example, lactASE is an enzyme which breaks down lactOSE (people who are lactose intolerant lack the lasctase needed to break it down). Hope this helped :)

  • @LordOfLoad nuclease, an enzyme

  • Interesting, we have lived with the nuclear threat since its discovery & application to Weapons of Mass Destruction. Now this, most of the funding was from the military budget, the military applications are primary & well known, & in the works.

No scientist involved in this project should ever delude themselves that this will be beneficial to mankind as a whole. Selling it to the public in that format could be construed as nothing more than self delusional propaganda...But its worse than that.

  • I find it absolutely unbelievable that at this stage in our scientific advancement we are still plagued by religious dogma. Even if there IS a creator or designer he isn't the God these zealots speak of. Science trumps religion in EVERY respect. No exceptions.

  • What he did wasn't so great, Years and years of trial and error research with super computers and they created a single cell organism that can't boot it's self up but if left alone in a mud puddle.....WTF! It's still takes life to creat life even if it's identity is changed!

  • am I the only one who thinks about a zombie apocalypse ?

  • @abumefak2 Nope. Me to ;)

  • This is stupid!

All I have to do is beware of a talking snake, make sure my kids don't see this video, you no because of Adam and Eve. Yes, I almost forgot, we have to sacrifice a goat and make sure I say to my son about Abraham's sacrifice of his son Isaac - what a great lesson. Don't eat pork, that's evil, kill an infidel, of course, this is given, stay away from alcohol and gold, that's evil, make sure my wife wears a hijab, and we all pray 5 times a day. Craig Venter is a liar, Allahu Akbar

  • Comment removed

  • "They told me I could become anything.... So I became God." - Craig Venter

  • I'd just like to stress that he wasn't the first guy to do this, It was a british dude, Just the american government and media made it out that he was first :L

  • Once when asked by an interviewer "Are you playing God?" Craig Venter replied "I'm not playing".

  • 59 people believe in a 2000 year old book of laws written by ignorant, incestuous goat herders instead of the undeniable scientific proof presented by awesome people like Craig Venter when it comes to the matter of life's origins.

  • CAN YOU SAY ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE

  • @NizzBomb69 , can you say they released it in the gulf of mexico already. yep funded by yours truly B.P. F.U. Craig!

  • I am both pleased and horrified to know the plans to introduce this technology into vaccines. You wont be getting it into my body.

  • I have to admit that I really admire Venter. He's an academic badass.

  • This is huge.
