this is so beautiful.. its amazing, it has so many emotions in it, im nearly crying at the music...wats it called?? its heavenly! this is one of the best videos ive ever seen!!! 5/5 KUDOS TO THE DIRECTOR!
The music is Chopin - prelude in E Minor. And thanks for the kudos, but I owe it to the folks (T J Rotolo and Tim Storms) who took the time out to put this together as a freebie.
Incredible Video, amazing, it is great...there is nothing I can say to describe how much I love it. Dont really care about the flags or about the fact that they use sabers even though they clearly are foilists because they count only the torso as valid target. Ive had a few first blood duels and they were always with fencing sabers, just because it is easier to cut :) we always keep our masks though... :)
I saw Ring of Steel not too long ago and really liked the combat scenes, especially the light-hearted one with "Brian". Rules of Engagement is much darker but just as riveting. Do you have any plans to make any longer films with the darker tone? By the way, your special effects work is awesome!
Ring of Steel was originally a much darker film. Kind of like "Deer Hunter" where Alex completely loses touch with who he is and doesn't even recognize his girlfriend. And yea, I've always got a bunch of projects lined up in addition to the effects work.
Very nice video and very nice atmosphere too. One little mistake though (huge, if you are a fencer ;-)): They're talking about the crotch as part of the hit area which means they are foil fencers. However the duel is fought with sabres... Anyway I would also love to see the movie!!!
I can only imagine how hard it would be to accurately depict an entire feature film after shooting just a 5 minute short.
Good point (so to speak). Regardless of the weapon in question, I felt it was OK for these two fencers to settle the dispute with weapons of their choice. To make the bout as dramatic as possible, I chose sabers.
Good choice, even if sabre was the one wepon fenced at the 1912 Olympics that did NOT have a national team storm off in protest.
The Olympics are what, over time, homogenized fencing. There were lots of arguements, protests, and at least two real duels over the course of the first 7 Olympic Games...
Hey, don't be so hard on yourself! The video itself is a masterpiece. And, if it was a one-night shoot, maybe there was no time to remove the "wrong" flags.
Is there any possibility that the film will be actually shot in the future? It's so frustrating to see this trailer knowing that I cannot go to the movie theater or buy the DVD!
There is a mistake in your video. The Canadian maple leaf flag can be seen in the background. However, that flag did NOT exist until 1965! Before that we had the Red Ensign which was a red flag that had the british union jack in the corner and looks nothing like the maple leaf flag. Otherwise the video was well done.
Well, also the Israeli flag is out-of-time here, isn't it? It did exist as the symbol of the Zionism, but not as an official state flag, so in theory it shouldn't be there because at that time it was merely the symbol of a political movement. Korean flag was also slightly different at that time.
Great fencing, very dense atmosphere! The sound isn't that brilliant though (I couldn't really understand the dialogue). I like the composition of really fast fencing scenes and the intensely emotional dialogue. I would really like to know what happened after the fleche in the end (how much did it hurt to hit the ground flat on your stomach?) ;-)
Thanks! Actually we did the fleche about a dozen times and TJ caught himself every time. And yea, I haven't really figured out how to digitize footage for Youtube without having sound sync problems. Thanks for the comments though!
If you want to be really picky, there is also a Canadian Flag which was only inaugurated on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on February 15, 1965, with Governor General Georges Vanier, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, the members of the Cabinet and thousands of Canadians in attendance. having said that, I would like to congratulations on this clip. It is great... maybe you could do a few more about fencing ;).
Noted above. This was shot in one night and we were more worried about the scene than the background. I already pulled a few of the other 2006 banners and I was thinking about digitally replacing the Israeli flag with a swastika until I found out that didn't happen until 1920. I could always put in a US flag with 48 stars and see who notices that.
well it's suppose to be a duel right...not some friendly sparring session...anyway nobody would fence like that unless in the duel...forgot to mention that i loved the bladework...but how come there is no footwork..
ya fencing like that w/o masks isnt something you should do, but i guess you guys are pros. also, isnt the german guy using a sabre and the french guy using a epee? so i guess that frist blood would b valid target. anyways, all in all i loved it. cool blade work and "tricks." Great job! :)
There's a fencer in the crowd! Yea, that's what we were shooting for - although having someone launch themselves at you without a mask isn't something I'd recommend.
As a devil's advocate..1912 you say.. notice the israeli flag... a couple of decades before the country even existed. Also the year 2003 in a PLASTIC ADVERTISEMENT behind the frenchman...
Yep, we never thought it was going to turn out this good, so we overlooked a few of the anachronisms. However, I did remove a bunch of other 2003 banners in post - just haven't gotten around to the Israeli flag yet.
did t.j. play a role in power rangers? or did the internet lied to me again

How come Israeli flag is hanging on the wall if this is supposed to be 1912? State of Israel was established by UN only in 1948.

See previous comments. The video has turned into "spot the flag". No one has commented yet about the new gymnastic apparatus.
