SEMPER FI!!!!!! LOVE THE VETS AND THE ONES THAT ARE SERVING THAT HAVE STAND AGAINST AND THEY STAND BY THEIR OATH THAT THEY TOOK WHEN THEY ENLISTED!!!!!
i servired so people could be idle and still stay alive. My son will probablly will not go to a university but i will not stand for behavior that is not good for the republic of tejas, if you burn my flag, if you stepo on MY flag, if you disrespect my flag:OUR FLAG' I havge the 1ST ammendment right to EXPRESSS my SELF
personally i believe that putting the american flag on the ground and having people walk on it is extremely disrespectful to this country and to the people who have served to keep that flag strong but i also think that it is their right under the republic which that flag stands for to do what they see fit with that flag
Its called "ART" and "ART" can be displayed without limit. People are free to their opinion but art just like Music is open for interpretation to what ever the artist finds willing.
See it's foolish people like this that stopped natural naked art to come to america many many years ago.
It's a fucking flag... What's the big deal now i see if they threw your child on the ground and started stepping on them then that is different... But it's a flag... I cant wait to get my hands on one im gonna go downtown and put one on the ground and see what happens...
I'm sorry. pardon my language. but this is BULLSHIT. i don't see this as art as all. don't get me wrong. the flag is a beautiful thing. i love it. if i didn't i wouldn't have signed up to defend it. to put the Flag of the United States (painting or not) on the ground is the HIGHEST form of disrespect possible. the face that college students walking down the hallway would step on old glory is disgusting. what i see from 5:30 to the end makes me want to vomit that people would have such disrespect
We have better to stand up to all the American Haters that are living here right now! This Veteran and many like him served and fight against tyranny and for what ?! So these pukes can spout there hate for America!!! Just a week ago 5 students were told they can't where the USA T-shirts on CINCO de MAYO because it is a Mexican Holiday for Mexican only?!! The last time I checked California is still part of the USA!!! You A-Holes have woken the American sleeping giant and he is mad as hell...
I've never stepped on a flag, or burned a flag, or shoved one down a toilet. I don't give a shit about doing anything like that anymore than I give a shit about making a fuss over someone who DOES do that. I can't imagine getting all heated up over something like this.
The flags, first of all, weren't real flags, they were made out of duct tape. Second, there were paths around each and every one of the flags which made it easy to avoid stepping on them. The point of the project was not to disrespect the flags, but to see if people still had respect for them in the first place. I am a student at UMF, and I clearly remember every person that was in the student center (at the same time as me) where this took place walking around them, so as to not step on them.
During the creation of our laws, there was many laws about how the flag would be shown. It would not be shown as ink on a person, thrown on the ground, burned and ETC. Of course things change with time. People that burn flags and throw them on the ground hide like cowards and use free speech as and excuse. The tattooing of an american flag on a persons body can be understandable. People that do that stuff have never been to another country, you have it easy as hell in the USA.
The flag is a symbold just like the eagle and liberty bell. People don't cause a fit if the eagle is on the floor. People fight for the freedom that the flag symbolizes not the flag it's self.
@XoCryssaLynnoX you need to read about your history. People have died for the flag itself. There are many occasions when a soldier had been shot and wounded where instead of wanting to be dragged to safety they would reply "Just protect take the flag." Also towards the end of the video you can see the Emo lame asses standing on the flag like its no big deal. Being a veteran myself I would have picked up the flags myself. I would have gone to jail, it would of been worth it.
man it would have been nice to see the two whit shit taped to their backs get their heads bounced off that floor. Disrespectful shits. Their moms should have swallowed.
the flag is a symbol of freedom. this girl did the project to see how many people would walk around and respect the flag. as the this says it is important to him and therefore her project showed that people still respect it. However she is showing her freedom of expression in a public place and this shouldn't be revoked
The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
it doesnt matter, it is a symbol of what many men and women have fought and died to defend, it is a representation of the flag of our nation, and should be shown the respect expected thereof. i am not trying to sound offensive to you or anyone, but if it helps to understand what i am trying to say, think of it this way, imagine the person(s)/items that you care about most. that you would willingly ide a thousand times over for, now imagine that someone painted their face on the floor and spread
Yes. Because I fought for the right for that to happen. Do you see. In America we have freedom of speech and that includes things that may be considered unpatriotic. I have several friends and relatives who are veterans including my mother and not one of them made this into a big deal because that IS what they fought for. Freedom. I am not saying that I would have done this art project.
I was just letting you know that it didn't need to be burned because it wasn't a real flag. And all the little flags were added, at least that is my understanding, before the veteran got there. They were not part of the art project. The other thing this video doesn't show (since it is biased, it was actually used to further someone's political career. Someone was running for state office and used this as propaganda why he should be elected) is that the veteran was granted locations to peacefully
protest but he denied it at first. The veteran was also breaking the law by obstructing walkways and committing vandalism. The artist however was within her rights. And those rights are what the flag stands for and what he truly fought for.
# No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations.
# The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a LIVING THING. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.
# The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
# The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.
# The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, or carrying, or delivering anything.
RESPECT is a verb...an action. It is important to always show proper respect for the United States Flag. PROTOCOL defines HOW we demonstrate our respect for the flag. Much of this is spelled out for us in the FLAG CODE. Among these rules and guidelines: * The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
Endless wars,Abusive powers,Decline living standards,Lack proper healthcare,Loosing jobs- no sense of security..etc.American dream got in the corporate-WHITEHOUSEWHORES's jaws & the military helped.Whats in it for a U.S. citizen to have trillions of debt?Or to project power across the globe?yet the military enjoys tearing down communities, civilizations bringing genocide- choas. You will be Despized..you are not defeanding anyone exept your paychecks..enjoy resistance..From Iraq..El Toro.
Any "artist" should know that it's not just a piece of "cloth" - unless they missed their classes on symbolism. That being said, freedom of speech protects her right to lay a flag on the ground and see if people will walk on it (I wouldn't dream of pulling a similar stunt, but w/e.) That veteran fought for those rights - whether he likes them or not it (seems like he didn't get the First Amendment part read before he enlisted.)
I'm a Desert Storm veteran and the second that piece of sh!t said it was just a piece of cloth he would have received a head butt straight to the face.I would have gone to jail no doubt, but would have been worth every minute of it.I wish the little b!tch that came up with this so called art work would go live in Iran for 6 months and see if she still believe's the same way about the American flag. She can die and burn in Hell as far as I'm concerned, and all of her supporters.
People like this are sick. Theres plenty of ways to protest other than disgracing the very Women and Men who bleed for there freedoms. And that freedom doesnt/shouldnt include burning or defacing or walking on the flag. You all are spoiled shits, and very disrespectful. I fully support protest, its healthy, but this isnt protest. This is a way of doing somthing wrong and controversial because these people know liberal lawers will run to defend anything that is anti-American or anti-military
I support that lone Veteran ... he is doing his best to argue his case. As disrespectful as the thought of having the flag laying on the floor is - you see so many of the young college kids doing their best not to step on the flag symbols. At least there are still youngsters out there that respect the flag.
Clearly these people who were "fighting for your first amendment rights" did a pretty pathetic job of it, since free speech-hating lovers of censorship like yourself seem to still exist in isolated rural pockets of America. Why is it that those who invoke "freedom" the most in their rhetoric are always the ones whose actions reveal nothing but contempt for the concept?
Last I checked slavery = bad, and a flag flown by "rebels" sick enough to actually give their lives so that slavery may persist is a vitriolic banner of hate on par with the Nazi swastika. Whine about it until you're blue in the face, the Civil War was ultimately about slavery, and the idea of contemporary Southerners expressing pride in having such a monstrous evil as their "heritage" makes me want to throw up.
Enough with these idiots touting freedom of speach. If you own an item very dear to you, you will not leave it on the floor of your house. There are laws concerning how the flag should be honored and repected. I have been in the millitary for almost 10 years now. Believe me, concerning the American Flag, the Veterens know what is best. The only time a Flag can ever be layed out like that is when it is inside a church.
I value my doormat and my rugs....they are left on the floor of my house. Why are you lunatics still talking about this?! And you should also realize that this "American flag" was in actuality made of duct tape, the smaller ones made of napkins.
You are missing the point. It is not a doormat or a rug, therefore you would not leave it on the floor. I would not leave the American Flag on the floor anymore than I would of a picture of my deceased relatives.
If you educate yourself on the US Code, you will find out that it does not matter what it is made out of.
So then explain to me why this situation was any different than someone eating or drinking using those cups and plates emblazoned with the American flag. What about people wiping their mouths with napkins decorated that way? Tablecloths getting dirty? Clothing with the American flag on it being sweat upon and dirtied? Even worse, what if you blow your nose with one of those American flag napkins! You're blowing your nose on America!! OMG TERRORIST COMMUNIST!!!
Well, believe it or not it is considered unlawful for the flag to be embroidered on anything that is for temporary use or to be discarded. The flag should not be worn as clothing either.
I get tired of people going on about how the flag is just a symbol, a piece of cloth. Well yeah, and as a symbol, it represents America and everything it stands for. So if you do not have respect for the flag, it is obvious that you do not have respect for your own country.
I never said the flag was a symbol, even though it is (as you have already written)...I was simply stating that this situation was, when it came down to it, no different than people showing off their patriotism by wearing a t-shirt with an American flag on it.
How can it be patriotic in one sense according to some people and unpatriotic according to others in a different situation? I don't see a story about every other person with a flag shirt they bought at Wal Mart on Fox News.
Well, most people are oblivious to the fact that napkins or t shirts is actually against the law and unpatriotic. They think its the opposite. Laying a flag on the ground seems like the worst kind of disrespect of the flag other than flag burning.
a lot of you people who watch this don't really know why susan crane did this do you? it was a perfectly respectable project to see if people walking through the hallway would walk around or over the flags. it was a test of our respect for the flag, not a form of disgrace or disrespect for the flag. it wasn't about the flags being on the ground, she couldn't have put them on the wall because people don't walk on the wall.
And what exactly do you know about respecting the flag? There are laws put in place to protect the flag. There are laws that are put in place to tell us how the flag should be repected.
i understand there are laws and i respect those laws, but this project was a test to see if OTHER people respected those laws too, it was to test how we feel about the country in a way. it had nothing to do with deliberately disrespecting the flag at all, she had a hard time doing this project because she was putting flags on the ground, but again it was a test to see who would step on the flags and who wouldn't. so all of you conservative people need to open your eyes and realize that.
A test? The test was on Patriotism. That woman failed the test. Stepping on the flag is just as disrepectfull as laying it on the ground. In fact, you are supposed to burn the flag if any part of it touches the ground. Any yes, I am a conservative. But do I have to be? Why can't people that want to protect the flag and respect its laws be called Americans?
would you listen to what i'm saying! she didn't just throw the flags on the ground just because she felt like it, she did it as a project to see if people had enough respect to walk AROUND the flag and not on it. it has nothing to do with placing the flags on the ground. and those flags were made by her with duct tape anyway so i'm sure they were destroyed, so don't worry your closed-minded pants off.
I understand what you are saying but the law is the law! There is no exception for the law. Plus, people where stepping on the flag. She disrepected the flag and this country's laws to protect the flag by placing it on the ground and by allowing people to step on it.
You call me close minded, but you kinda have to be if you actually read the law. The law says the flag is never to touch the ground at any time. WHAT PART OF THAT DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?!!
There are no laws regarding the proper display and handling of the flag, there are "codes" which exist completely outside of criminal and civil law (and therefore infractions thereof are not punished). Ironically, every redneck who goes to Walmart to buy tacky, made in China American flag crap is defying the Flag Codes just as shamelessly as the young woman who orchestrated this "art installation".
Thank god I live in a country where Free Speech is sacred and I'm free to desecrate the flag.
Its a free country and the artist just wanted a chance say something to everyone. This is the way she did it. She could have done it another way but didn't and we need to respect her choice. I do however feel that walking on the flag is a disgrace. If it is art then no one should be touching it.
It's called freedom of speech and freedom of expression, and the artist has as much of a right to form that expression as everybody in here has their right to disagree with it. Gotta love the flag waivers, freedom of speech is only okay if they agree with it, and freedom of expression is only acceptable if limited to chants of "U.S.A! U.S.A! U.S.A!"
notice the typical liberal clip haired women, with there smug faces, their lunchbags stuffed with granola, and their Subaru's parked out front with anti-American bumper stickers....losers
This makes me so not proud to have graduated from here! If people don't understand why this is so upsetting they should try to talk with some veterans or spouses of military personnel. I am a wife of a Marine and this burns me. Freedom of speech is fine, but this is disrespectful. You don't get it.
Doesn't anyone realize that this is an artistic that displays art in motion.. views of the people within our country were well shown, by those who stood in front of the flag and protected it because of personal views/morals or connections with the country they felt they had to stand for. Those who stood on the flag showed the same opinion oriented views although opposite but they can equally be stood for... americans believe in freedom of expression, but artistic expression is still taboo, why?
The UMF President is an ultra liberal and a feminist. She claims to have disliked every President since Kennedy. What a woman who really loves America...
Is there an artist's statement anywhere? I guess I just want to know what she was hoping to accomplish by doing this. I personally don't have much of an opinion, except I will say that a flag made of colored duct tape is no different than the flag outside the whitehouse. People need to stop with the argument that her flags were not legit. They were enough of a symbol to ignite a contreversy which would go on to be viewed 126,000 times on youtube. The flags were real.
Good for that veteran!! I liked how most of the people walking by refused to step on the flags, but I would have knocked that jackass off that was standing on it!
How is this considered art anyways? Its simply disgraceful!
I went to UMF, I'm a veteran, and I think its sick that the good liberals at UMF allowed this stupid girl and her stupid Art teacher to allow this. Too many people need to have some sense beat into them now a days.
the man defending the flag is the true hero not the people who thinks this is art. this country needs to wake up and defend it self from people like this.
AN UTTER DISGRACE!!!! THIS IS AN INSULT AND A DISGRACE TO ALL AMERICANS!!! This is worse than Maplethorpe's pictures of a bull whip stuck up someone's ass.
How sad that some people think that putting the flag on the ground is Art..... So sad.... I don't care if it was painted on the ground or taped on the ground it all means the same thing.... soooo sad My Dad fought for this country in Vietnam and I know if I would have been there I would have been in jail because I would have picked up the flags sry but its more to me then a piece of cloth
I raised my right hand and agreed to defend the constitution of the United States against all threats foreign and domestic. I'm in Iraq as I right this. Yet, what I do isn't to protect some "symbol" of the United States. It's to protect her right to express herself in a peaceable manner. I think she's a great American for exercising that right. So few of you ever do.
If you guys were any kinds of patriots, you'd realize those aren't flags. Count the stripes, look at the stars. And they're made out of duct tape. This wasn't a social or political statement. It was an art experiment about context. Even though they weren't flags, people noticed the design of an American flag and assumed they were flags on the ground, much like the people watching this video and the veteran. The intended audience was just people at UMF to see their reaction, not the internet.
sorry to say it's more of disgrace. the flag is not just a piece of cloth but a symbol of america and those who fought for it. For soldiers this act is like a spit in the face. Saying thanks for your service but we don't give a shit about why you fought and served.
Sorry Chris, vets don't think that way. The flag has been a "symbol" of our or any country's heritage since it's foundation. If it has not, then why has every major battle hosted since America's founding, found the flag in the front ranks. You can't say its just a piece of cloth and the rights here are all Americans rights. What every you are, your American first and everything else second. I am American First and German second and I have served proudly. I don't worship cloth I worship GOD.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Then again, I bet many of you wouldn't be able to match the first sentences of the Constitution and The Declaration of Independence if given the words and told to guess which is which.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It's just a flag. When you start worshiping a piece of cloth to the point that you will infringe on others rights, you've forgotten how to respect your country and the Constitution.
I'm sorry to break it to you, but it's the truth. You are being delusional and spitting on the Constitution. The Constitution is what you should be so vehemently defending and protecting, not a piece of cloth.
UMaine Orono is the same way, also someone at UMaine-Orono put pictures of homeless people on the Union floor so people had to walk on them to get through. I ended up going the long way around because I didn't feel right about walking on homeless peoples faces. I think Mainers are trying to make a point but they are doing it in a very stupid and uneducated way. I hated UMaine anyway and left because too many rude people go to school there making insulting comments all the time.
God Bless that veteran and the student. How DARE those limp-wristed maggots allow some retarded "artist" to paint American flags on the floor. I just wished I was closer to Maine so I could take a ride over and provide that "artist" with my "freedom of expression."
I think kicking his ass and then pissing on him would allow me to "express" what I thought of his perverted treatment of our veterans.
Phana24JeffG I am from Maine and I agree with you about this so called artist. I left UMaine Orono because a lot of students and staff have this sort of self ritious attitude thinking that everything they do is right, but they don't bother researching, studying, or learning about stuff before they implement it. They just go right ahead and do what they want regardless of how many people they hurt. I was also sick of their snotty attitudes at UMaine and heavy drinking!
Funny How that guy says to the veteran who has fought for our country its just a symbol. I bet he goes to church. How would he feel if someone destroyed a cross in front of him and said oh well its just a symbol.
what the fuck is this? apparently these people have never heard of treason. and since when was treating a symbol of this nation with disrespect legal anyways? the disgrace of those flags implies me with the right to commit such actions as to piss on the statue of liberty, or the washington monument, yet i cant, because its illegal, so why is this any different? is it not the same? if liberal butt-fucking students have the freedom to place those flags there, one has the freedom to pick them up.
ok, i don't get it. aren't those people just stating their opinion, that they're not proud of the way things are going in the USA? freedom of speech and debate people, there's nothing wrong with it. and fyi, the UMF has a great reputation and is a great college. i've lived in Farmington all my life and i've seen the signs saying "one of america's top colleges."
Why? Why, other than messing with people and causing a stink, was this "art project" done? I find it, as an artist and and American to be juvenile and hardly artistic................
The person wished to paint the US flag so they did so, the ways in which this art was presented is not innately offensive but perceived to be so by some. I am personally unbothered by the prospect displayed in the video.
Let me start by saying I feel privileged to live in a country so great and free as America. I can see how this is extremely upsetting to many, but I can also see its place in today's society.
For starters, one of the greatest things about this country is the fact that we are allowed to voice our opinions and display our creations, despite the oppressors and despite those that want it hidden. We are free from the tyranny of others beliefs and are given the freedom of our own.
However, this yields another right; which is the right to stand against it. The veteran was certainly in his right to stand against the piece of art and personally, I can clearly understand his reasoning.
However, the only way to truly stay patriotic in this circumstance is not to waive both sides rights, allowing the veteran to destroy one's ideas, then turn around and arresting him for having his own... but rather allow both sides to post their ideals.
Although the (for the lack of a better word) "protectors" of the art seemed to side with my reasoning, I strongly disagree with the manner in which they achieved it. My father is a Navy Seal veteran (Vietnam, 2 tours) and has suffered multiple wounds, physical and mental, because of it. He has endured this to fight for our country and its foundations. Its foundations ladies and gentleman, are known as rights.
Now as I contemplate what to say next, I can only imagine the response I will receive from this message. I will be labeled a non-patriot, I will be seen as a suppressor, and I will be told I am not an American. But the reality is, it is your right to do so. This is the same circumstance as the video showed us. The truth is that I have an American flag hanging in my room. To me, it is a symbol of our country. What it symbolizes is open to interpretation.
ust think of what something like this says to the rest of the world. They are going to think that Americans have no respect for the country they live in. How unbelievably patriotic can you get? Think, what was one of the first things we did at the Twin Towers? We put our flag up. It is a symbol, a symbol of freedom and support. If you were a solder on a battlefield, you couldnt imagine how much comfort that symbol would give you. And here we are stepping on it.
With due respect my friend Swkavin, a flag is merely a symbol open to interpretation; as a person raised among the British culture to me the US flag (or for that matter any flag) is simply a coloured piece of cloth so to leave it on the floor is symbollic of nothing from my perspective. I respect that others, particularly those raised in the US culture shall see this differently but I would not worry about the US societies international reputation with regards to this video.
If someone burns the american flag, does that mean we all have to surrender to whoever did it because they've kicked our butts so bad by doing so? ...huhh? Have we all-of-a-sudden lost all military might simply b/c someone stepped on the american flag? ...well??? I don't think so, because it's just a piece of cloth. We should learn from this, as it were a test, to see if we will allow others to play mind tricks on us or not. So, which will you do, then? Make your choice.
You And I are AMERICANS and We Are Free Thinkers And We Are NOT FORSALE. Say it with me everyone I Am A Free Thinking American And Im Not ForSale. Open Your Eyes And Ears. But Dont show your faces Because The Goverment, and the NWO's Got Your Number. Your IP Ect.

fuck americans. you're all a bunch of murdering scum.inbred from a horses arse. you all make me wanna be sick.arrogant assholes. Murdering scum. you call yourselves "Peace keepers" yet you're the ones killing people in Iraq. you all deserve to have the living shit beaten out of you.
We need more open minded people such as yourself, people who don't make broad generalizations about other countries and peoples. Yes, you are an icon of calm, cool, and collected logical debate. You truly are a credit to South Africa.
oh ok so who are you again? some poor junk country that probably gets aid from America am I right? Or possibly a European country that would not exist today if American scum did not save your ass. Oh and we deserve to have the shit beaten out of us? Id like you and your country to try.
I hate people from other countries because of stereotypes I'm fed!
It turns out all Mexicans are poor. And did you know that every Chinese person drives a rickshaw? It's true. And every Arab is a terrorist! The English? Why they all hate guns--every last one of them!
There is not a single person in any country that defies the only stereotype that exists for each country!
This is a person who has no experience in the outside world and doesnt have an open mind. Sounds like the unthinking majority doesnt it? You hate other countries simply because of the stereotypes? I can prove to you that every single country has people completely diverse. Im a living example of that. I recently spent a year in Brazil and the common stereotype there is that americans are small-minded, lazy, and fat. I am an american and I am fit, very active, and very open minded and outgoing.
Incredible, just incredible... and this student still thinks it's OK to do this and the Veterans are wrong. I have an idea for your next chain-pulling idiotic stunt. Go to Harlem, NYC at about 9pm. Strip naked, put a bucket over your head and hold a piece of rope. Then, loud as you can , yell "Niggaz!". After all, it's just ART man, no one should be offended, man, because it's just ART. Let us know how it all works out.
Any school that allows that to happen should be shut down. Any teacher or principle that allows this type of behavior should be tried for treason. What a bunch of fucking losers.

1-800-Waa-haaa. LMAO! It's just an art project. Besides, they're so proud of our american flag that they have it all over their school! They could have pornography instead, you know. We should be proud of what they've chosen to emulate, the american flag that is. (singing)"I'm proud to be an american, where at least I know I'm free. And I won't forget the men who died and gave that right to me..."
I would like to tell you this, any man that is still willing to go to jail for our flag TODAY, is a man I respect now and ALWAYS will.
The respect issue is lacking these days! He has fought for our country, for you and all of your civil liberties, THANK the man! He's never forgotten what he has done for this nation, and neither should anyone else, EVER!
Sorry, I'm very passionate about these issues, too many soldiers in my family that have fought for all of us. :)
Most of us have the proud tradition of ourselves and our fore-fathers serving in the U.S. Military. But didn't we already thank this man..? And don't we already have holidays and other ways that we honor our veterans, both living and passed? And yes, both you and your fore-fathers fought for freedom of speech, including what exists in this video. Don't be hypocritical and say "Freedom of Speech" one moment, and then try to limit it the next!!!
i wholeheartedly agree, these people who think they are artists are just insulting the men and women of our country who have fought and dies just so that we could be free from tyranny and oppression. the man in this video is actually recognizing the people who died for it, had i had the chance, i would have been standing right there beside him. God bless America
You're talking about the Bush reign! It's over saurusnebula. Bush has no place in history, except for being the most ignorant.
Most Americans do respect their flag and their country, unfortunately, our current President didn't. It just so happens that I sent a letter to this dear veteran and I received a wonderful response from him.
MOST AMERICANS are the ones who put that stupid idiot, bush Jr, in the white house for 2 terms!!! My issue isn't with the veteran in this video, but with the way the flag was displayed, and you need to separate the two. That's the whole point of this video. If a child accidentally steps on a flag, you would forgive him b/c he didn't intend it as an insult to veterans. This point applies to the art project, which is not intended as an insult to veterans. Get it straight!!! @ShoosieQ
@saurusnebula - Oh, I get it, believe me! Unfortunately, I am not of the generation that separates the flag and the veteran. The flag is not art to a soldier. It is our American flag. I don't give a damn if it's an art project or not! I have many pieces of art in my home, but my flag hangs outside my home as a symbol of my freedom and yours! It also symbolizes what my family has fought for, so don't think that I haven't gotten it straight! Have you fought in a war?
Yup. Destert Storm Veteran here. Received the National Defense Service Medal. And me Grandpappy fought in WWII, and Great Grandpappy in WWI. I am a veteran, so I DO know about that. Now, if you'd just get past the brain-washing that the military instilled in you, you'll see that I'm right. @ShoosieQ
Brain-washing as in having pride, honor and love of your country? I wouldn't exactly brag about having the NDSM. The Criteria: The National Defense Service Medal was awarded for honorable active service for any period between 27 June 1950 and 27 July 1954; between 1 Jan 1961 and 14 Aug 1974; between 2 Aug 1990 and 30 Nov 1995 and between 11 Sept 2001 and a closing date to be determined.
Basically, if you're in during a specific time period, show up every day and don't get kicked out.
Go America! Let's take over all the other countries of the world. Their resources will be ours! We have the power, the technology, let's do it for our country. Screw every other country, we should be ruling the planet, and nuking anyone in our way! Let's just exterminate other countries one by one, exterminating their people, but taking their lands and resources for ourselves!!! We've already got Afghanistan and Iraq, let's take Iran, Egypt, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. We don't like them anyway.
Holy crap, that's right! I forgot all about our current policy of total war. Why haven't they changed the maps to reflect the fact that the Middle East and maybe China are made of radioactive glass?
Oh right, because we DON'T nuke anything in our way. Whoops, might want to fact check next time.
What the american flag stood for 50 years ago is different than what it stands for today, which is a country that has a former alcoholic for a president, a president who lies to the american people so he can wage a fake war to give himself a place in history, and an american people who are war-mongerers like their president. The flag stands for a country who puts its children at risk of attack by other countries b/c our forces are there terrorizing their families.
That man and woman are educators? What kind of education are they teaching? Freedom isn't free - it's free to us because of the life laid down by our soldiers. Our flag will wave long past these people are gone. I'm proud to be an American.
I feel sick to my stomach after watching this video.
I wish I was there with that good man who was arguing with those fools.
I would've picked up the flag too. Let's see them arrest me for "picking up the American flag off the ground". Go ahead, I dare you.
I love it when people do something horrible, and then they try to hide behind the 1st Amendment. It's really cowardly, pathetic, and only serves to prove that they have no idea what the Founding Fathers meant.
That's disgusting. I am appalled that this country has so much hatred for itself.
This is not art. It is a flag on the floor. This is not art. Anyone who says this is art has a distorted and incorrect perception of what art really is.
This is not art. This is simply a way of pushing people's buttons and angering American citizens.
How come it's "art" when we desecrate OUR flag, but it's a "hate crime" when we desecrate SOMEONE ELSE'S flag or ethnicity?

Whenever a soldier sees someone step or burn a flag, to that Vet, you are stepping on and burning his soul, Please tell me, will you step on a flag drapped coffin of someone that gave his or hers life for you ?, or would you grab the folded flag out of a Widows arms and step on the flag ? This flag is not Bush, this flag is not our government, this flag is all of us in America.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If a grandchild accidentally stepped on this same flag you speak of, does it do any real harm? No. The grandmother forgives the child because she knows it was not intended as an insult to the one the flag represented. In the same way, this display wasn't put up as an intentional insult to veterans, but as an art display. It's people like you, with your egocentric views, that think there's only one way to interpret a situation, or in this case a flag. And no flags were ripped out of anyone's arms
You get shot at, watch your friends die around you. We fight for what the flag is, not to let people try to say they have the "right" to disgrace it....nope sorry buddy better read your history again
You can go ahead and fight to defend a flag, I'd rather fight for the people... Choose this day who you will serve, the Lord or an idol like the flag.
Gee... I wonder which is worse, stepping on a flag or wishing someone to die; putting a shoe mark on a piece of cloth or murdering someone in your heart... Things like this are what test a person's true character, being either like Satan (a murderer) or like Jesus (Forgiver). Selah.
Well fuck your flag, it stands for discrimination, self-righteousness and all other forms of greed

Sect 4 Act. B
The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
harriswy917 1 year ago
The flags, first of all, weren't real flags, they were made out of duct tape. Second, there were paths around each and every one of the flags which made it easy to avoid stepping on them. The point of the project was not to disrespect the flags, but to see if people still had respect for them in the first place. I am a student at UMF, and I clearly remember every person that was in the student center (at the same time as me) where this took place walking around them, so as to not step on them.
Allisia88 1 year ago
During the creation of our laws, there was many laws about how the flag would be shown. It would not be shown as ink on a person, thrown on the ground, burned and ETC. Of course things change with time. People that burn flags and throw them on the ground hide like cowards and use free speech as and excuse. The tattooing of an american flag on a persons body can be understandable. People that do that stuff have never been to another country, you have it easy as hell in the USA.
masc2fighter 1 year ago
The flag is a symbold just like the eagle and liberty bell. People don't cause a fit if the eagle is on the floor. People fight for the freedom that the flag symbolizes not the flag it's self.

also while watching the video you can see 9/10 people walk around the flag. It's not being walked all over.
XoCryssaLynnoX 1 year ago
@XoCryssaLynnoX you need to read about your history. People have died for the flag itself. There are many occasions when a soldier had been shot and wounded where instead of wanting to be dragged to safety they would reply "Just protect take the flag." Also towards the end of the video you can see the Emo lame asses standing on the flag like its no big deal. Being a veteran myself I would have picked up the flags myself. I would have gone to jail, it would of been worth it.

The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

it doesnt matter, it is a symbol of what many men and women have fought and died to defend, it is a representation of the flag of our nation, and should be shown the respect expected thereof. i am not trying to sound offensive to you or anyone, but if it helps to understand what i am trying to say, think of it this way, imagine the person(s)/items that you care about most. that you would willingly ide a thousand times over for, now imagine that someone painted their face on the floor and spread

youtobeee 2 years ago
Yes. Because I fought for the right for that to happen. Do you see. In America we have freedom of speech and that includes things that may be considered unpatriotic. I have several friends and relatives who are veterans including my mother and not one of them made this into a big deal because that IS what they fought for. Freedom. I am not saying that I would have done this art project.
jrmytaylor 2 years ago
I was just letting you know that it didn't need to be burned because it wasn't a real flag. And all the little flags were added, at least that is my understanding, before the veteran got there. They were not part of the art project. The other thing this video doesn't show (since it is biased, it was actually used to further someone's political career. Someone was running for state office and used this as propaganda why he should be elected) is that the veteran was granted locations to peacefully

Clearly these people who were "fighting for your first amendment rights" did a pretty pathetic job of it, since free speech-hating lovers of censorship like yourself seem to still exist in isolated rural pockets of America. Why is it that those who invoke "freedom" the most in their rhetoric are always the ones whose actions reveal nothing but contempt for the concept?
apersonfromporlock 2 years ago 2
Last I checked slavery = bad, and a flag flown by "rebels" sick enough to actually give their lives so that slavery may persist is a vitriolic banner of hate on par with the Nazi swastika. Whine about it until you're blue in the face, the Civil War was ultimately about slavery, and the idea of contemporary Southerners expressing pride in having such a monstrous evil as their "heritage" makes me want to throw up.
apersonfromporlock 2 years ago
Enough with these idiots touting freedom of speach. If you own an item very dear to you, you will not leave it on the floor of your house. There are laws concerning how the flag should be honored and repected. I have been in the millitary for almost 10 years now. Believe me, concerning the American Flag, the Veterens know what is best. The only time a Flag can ever be layed out like that is when it is inside a church.
Leonidus82 3 years ago
I value my doormat and my rugs....they are left on the floor of my house. Why are you lunatics still talking about this?! And you should also realize that this "American flag" was in actuality made of duct tape, the smaller ones made of napkins.
Rawfullcopter 2 years ago
You are missing the point. It is not a doormat or a rug, therefore you would not leave it on the floor. I would not leave the American Flag on the floor anymore than I would of a picture of my deceased relatives.
If you educate yourself on the US Code, you will find out that it does not matter what it is made out of.
You really aren't that smart are you?
Leonidus82 2 years ago
So then explain to me why this situation was any different than someone eating or drinking using those cups and plates emblazoned with the American flag. What about people wiping their mouths with napkins decorated that way? Tablecloths getting dirty? Clothing with the American flag on it being sweat upon and dirtied? Even worse, what if you blow your nose with one of those American flag napkins! You're blowing your nose on America!! OMG TERRORIST COMMUNIST!!!
Rawfullcopter 2 years ago
Well, believe it or not it is considered unlawful for the flag to be embroidered on anything that is for temporary use or to be discarded. The flag should not be worn as clothing either.
I get tired of people going on about how the flag is just a symbol, a piece of cloth. Well yeah, and as a symbol, it represents America and everything it stands for. So if you do not have respect for the flag, it is obvious that you do not have respect for your own country.
Leonidus82 2 years ago
I never said the flag was a symbol, even though it is (as you have already written)...I was simply stating that this situation was, when it came down to it, no different than people showing off their patriotism by wearing a t-shirt with an American flag on it.
How can it be patriotic in one sense according to some people and unpatriotic according to others in a different situation? I don't see a story about every other person with a flag shirt they bought at Wal Mart on Fox News.
Rawfullcopter 2 years ago
Well, most people are oblivious to the fact that napkins or t shirts is actually against the law and unpatriotic. They think its the opposite. Laying a flag on the ground seems like the worst kind of disrespect of the flag other than flag burning.
Leonidus82 2 years ago
a lot of you people who watch this don't really know why susan crane did this do you? it was a perfectly respectable project to see if people walking through the hallway would walk around or over the flags. it was a test of our respect for the flag, not a form of disgrace or disrespect for the flag. it wasn't about the flags being on the ground, she couldn't have put them on the wall because people don't walk on the wall.
back2reality07 3 years ago
And what exactly do you know about respecting the flag? There are laws put in place to protect the flag. There are laws that are put in place to tell us how the flag should be repected.
Leonidus82 3 years ago
i understand there are laws and i respect those laws, but this project was a test to see if OTHER people respected those laws too, it was to test how we feel about the country in a way. it had nothing to do with deliberately disrespecting the flag at all, she had a hard time doing this project because she was putting flags on the ground, but again it was a test to see who would step on the flags and who wouldn't. so all of you conservative people need to open your eyes and realize that.
back2reality07 3 years ago
Leonidus82 3 years ago
would you listen to what i'm saying! she didn't just throw the flags on the ground just because she felt like it, she did it as a project to see if people had enough respect to walk AROUND the flag and not on it. it has nothing to do with placing the flags on the ground. and those flags were made by her with duct tape anyway so i'm sure they were destroyed, so don't worry your closed-minded pants off.
back2reality07 3 years ago
I understand what you are saying but the law is the law! There is no exception for the law. Plus, people where stepping on the flag. She disrepected the flag and this country's laws to protect the flag by placing it on the ground and by allowing people to step on it.
You call me close minded, but you kinda have to be if you actually read the law. The law says the flag is never to touch the ground at any time. WHAT PART OF THAT DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?!!
Leonidus82 3 years ago
There are no laws regarding the proper display and handling of the flag, there are "codes" which exist completely outside of criminal and civil law (and therefore infractions thereof are not punished). Ironically, every redneck who goes to Walmart to buy tacky, made in China American flag crap is defying the Flag Codes just as shamelessly as the young woman who orchestrated this "art installation".
Thank god I live in a country where Free Speech is sacred and I'm free to desecrate the flag.
apersonfromporlock 2 years ago
Its a free country and the artist just wanted a chance say something to everyone. This is the way she did it. She could have done it another way but didn't and we need to respect her choice. I do however feel that walking on the flag is a disgrace. If it is art then no one should be touching it.
mathnerd555 3 years ago
It's called freedom of speech and freedom of expression, and the artist has as much of a right to form that expression as everybody in here has their right to disagree with it. Gotta love the flag waivers, freedom of speech is only okay if they agree with it, and freedom of expression is only acceptable if limited to chants of "U.S.A! U.S.A! U.S.A!"

If you guys were any kinds of patriots, you'd realize those aren't flags. Count the stripes, look at the stars. And they're made out of duct tape. This wasn't a social or political statement. It was an art experiment about context. Even though they weren't flags, people noticed the design of an American flag and assumed they were flags on the ground, much like the people watching this video and the veteran. The intended audience was just people at UMF to see their reaction, not the internet.

Sorry Chris, vets don't think that way. The flag has been a "symbol" of our or any country's heritage since it's foundation. If it has not, then why has every major battle hosted since America's founding, found the flag in the front ranks.

I hated UMaine anyway and left because too many rude people go to school there making insulting comments all the time.
davidscalling 3 years ago
God Bless that veteran and the student. How DARE those limp-wristed maggots allow some retarded "artist" to paint American flags on the floor. I just wished I was closer to Maine so I could take a ride over and provide that "artist" with my "freedom of expression."
I think kicking his ass and then pissing on him would allow me to "express" what I thought of his perverted treatment of our veterans.
Phana24JeffG 3 years ago 6
Phana24JeffG I am from Maine and I agree with you about this so called artist. I left UMaine Orono because a lot of students and staff have this sort of self ritious attitude thinking that everything they do is right, but they don't bother researching, studying, or learning about stuff before they implement it. They just go right ahead and do what they want regardless of how many people they hurt. I was also sick of their snotty attitudes at UMaine and heavy drinking!

This was a disgrace. As a disabled veteran, I wish that I could have been there to block people from standing on the flag.

Funny How that guy says to the veteran who has fought for our country its just a symbol. I bet he goes to church. How would he feel if someone destroyed a cross in front of him and said oh well its just a symbol.
polarbear11269 3 years ago
what the fuck is this? apparently these people have never heard of treason. and since when was treating a symbol of this nation with disrespect legal anyways? the disgrace of those flags implies me with the right to commit such actions as to piss on the statue of liberty, or the washington monument, yet i cant, because its illegal, so why is this any different? is it not the same? if liberal butt-fucking students have the freedom to place those flags there, one has the freedom to pick them up.

Why? Why, other than messing with people and causing a stink, was this "art project" done? I find it, as an artist and and American to be juvenile and hardly artistic................
BeauJames59 3 years ago
The person wished to paint the US flag so they did so, the ways in which this art was presented is not innately offensive but perceived to be so by some. I am personally unbothered by the prospect displayed in the video.

TREASON!
CraftLulz 3 years ago
Let me start by saying I feel privileged to live in a country so great and free as America. I can see how this is extremely upsetting to many, but I can also see its place in today's society.
For starters, one of the greatest things about this country is the fact that we are allowed to voice our opinions and display our creations, despite the oppressors and despite those that want it hidden. We are free from the tyranny of others beliefs and are given the freedom of our own.
SydBarr3tt 3 years ago
However, this yields another right; which is the right to stand against it. The veteran was certainly in his right to stand against the piece of art and personally, I can clearly understand his reasoning.
However, the only way to truly stay patriotic in this circumstance is not to waive both sides rights, allowing the veteran to destroy one's ideas, then turn around and arresting him for having his own... but rather allow both sides to post their ideals.
SydBarr3tt 3 years ago
Although the (for the lack of a better word) "protectors" of the art seemed to side with my reasoning, I strongly disagree with the manner in which they achieved it. My father is a Navy Seal veteran (Vietnam, 2 tours) and has suffered multiple wounds, physical and mental, because of it. He has endured this to fight for our country and its foundations. Its foundations ladies and gentleman, are known as rights.
SydBarr3tt 3 years ago
Now as I contemplate what to say next, I can only imagine the response I will receive from this message. I will be labeled a non-patriot, I will be seen as a suppressor, and I will be told I am not an American. But the reality is, it is your right to do so. This is the same circumstance as the video showed us. The truth is that I have an American flag hanging in my room. To me, it is a symbol of our country. What it symbolizes is open to interpretation.
SydBarr3tt 3 years ago
ust think of what something like this says to the rest of the world. And here we are stepping on it.
swkavin 3 years ago
With due respect my friend Swkavin, a flag is merely a symbol open to interpretation; as a person raised among the British culture to me the US flag (or for that matter any flag) is simply a coloured piece of cloth so to leave it on the floor is symbollic of nothing from my perspective. I respect that others, particularly those raised in the US culture shall see this differently but I would not worry about the US societies international reputation with regards to this video.

It's not a real flag.

RadWood 3 years ago

Flag Flying Etiquette
1. Display your flag from sunrise to sunset. You can also fly it at night if you illuminate it.
2. There are dozens of flag days, but as a citizen, you may display your flag any day you wish.
3. Hoist your flag briskly and lower it ceremoniously.
4. Put it to the right or above other flags on display.
5. DON'T LET IT TOUCH THE GROUND.
Apparently that school isn't as well educated as they seem to think they are... Maybe you go to school there?

Don't be hypocritical and say "Freedom of Speech" one moment, and then try to limit it the next!!!
saurusnebula 3 years ago
i wholeheartedly agree, these people who think they are artists are just insulting the men and women of our country who have fought and dies just so that we could be free from tyranny and oppression. the man in this video is actually recognizing the people who died for it, had i had the chance, i would have been standing right there beside him.

ShoosieQ 3 years ago
MOST AMERICANS are the ones who put that stupid idiot, bush Jr, in the white house for 2 terms!!! My issue isn't with the veteran in this video, but with the way the flag was displayed, and you need to separate the two. That's the whole point of this video. If a child accidentally steps on a flag, you would forgive him b/c he didn't intend it as an insult to veterans. This point applies to the art project, which is not intended as an insult to veterans. Get it straight!!! @ShoosieQ
saurusnebula 3 years ago
@saurusnebula - Oh, I get it, believe me! Unfortunately, I am not of the generation that separates the flag and the veteran. The flag is not art to a soldier. It is our American flag. I don't give a damn if it's an art project or not! I have many pieces of art in my home, but my flag hangs outside my home as a symbol of my freedom and yours! It also symbolizes what my family has fought for, so don't think that I haven't gotten it straight! Have you fought in a war?
ShoosieQ 3 years ago 4
@ShoosieQ
saurusnebula 3 years ago

We don't like them anyway.
saurusnebula 3 years ago
Holy crap, that's right! I forgot all about our current policy of total war. Why haven't they changed the maps to reflect the fact that the Middle East and maybe China are made of radioactive glass?
Oh right, because we DON'T nuke anything in our way. Whoops, might want to fact check next time.

What the american flag stood for 50 years ago is different than what it stands for today, which is a country that has a former alcoholic for a president, a president who lies to the american people so he can wage a fake war to give himself a place in history, and an american people who are war-mongerers like their president. The flag stands for a country who puts its children at risk of attack by other countries b/c our forces are there terrorizing their families.
saurusnebula 3 years ago
That man and woman are educators? What kind of education are they teaching? Freedom isn't free - it's free to us because of the life laid down by our soldiers. Our flag will wave long past these people are gone. I'm proud to be an American.

I wish I was there with that good man who was arguing with those fools.
I would've picked up the flag too. Let's see them arrest me for "picking up the American flag off the ground". Go ahead, I dare you.
I love it when people do something horrible, and then they try to hide behind the 1st Amendment. It's really cowardly, pathetic, and only serves to prove that they have no idea what the Founding Fathers meant.
tripletrules 3 years ago 3
That's disgusting. I am appalled that this country has so much hatred for itself.
This is not art. It is a flag on the floor. This is not art. Anyone who says this is art has a distorted and incorrect perception of what art really is.
This is not art. This is simply a way of pushing people's buttons and angering American citizens.
How come it's "art" when we desecrate OUR flag, but it's a "hate crime" when we desecrate SOMEONE ELSE'S flag or ethnicity?

If a grandchild accidentally stepped on this same flag you speak of, does it do any real harm? No. The grandmother forgives the child because she knows it was not intended as an insult to the one the flag represented. In the same way, this display wasn't put up as an intentional insult to veterans, but as an art display. It's people like you, with your egocentric views, that think there's only one way to interpret a situation, or in this case a flag. And no flags were ripped out of anyone's arms
