It seems rediculous to destroy a cruiser or destroyer after only one or two hits from the enemy. Even real navy ships don't usually sink that quickly, except by being torpedoed. Sure, the makers of the show considered most of the other ships disposable and only the Yamato to be really important, but that's just not realistic.

Agree. One shot and the ship is destroyed. Not very plausible.

Especially since the Yamato is practically shot to pieces in many episodes, but keeps right on going. Then in the next episode (and sometimes the SAME episode) looks brand new again.

Not really. In WWII there were many destroyers and light cruisers that were hit and sunk by a single bomb, especially if it detonated in a magazine. The Comet Empire's fleet seems to have weapons that completely envelope the smaller ships while the heavies hang on a bit longer. The Burst Engery Teleportation Cannon could deliver about a 1/4 of a wave motion blast at twice the range.

It was originally called a

"Burst Energy Transport Cannon"...

not a "Flame Gun" as in the old American version.

So the Balsey ship could teleport shots of energy at the Earth fleet! Unique idea!

The Medaruusa, White Comet Empire's Flagship, is armed with a quick charging "Burst Engery Teleportation Cannon" better known as the "Magna Flame Gun". Her main advantage comes from her improved SMITE equipemnt, which allows her to teleport Tachion shots out to ranges far in excess of EDF Wave motion guns. SMITE allowed Medarussa to destroy so many ships so quickly at extreme range.

even much of the ship design would change except for what make Yamato what she is. And the alien ships will no longer look so similar to human ships...

It was painful to watch all those earth ships go up like beer cans at a frat picnic. What it came down to is poor intelligence. Had they known about that energy transport cannon (a/k/a magna-flame gun in the "Starblazers"), they could have used a different strategy, like spreading their fleet out so a dozen ships don't cook with each shot (haven't they learned ANYTHING from Pearl Harbor?--LOL).

You are probably thinking of the movie "Arrivederci Yamato". Which is what "Yamato 2" is based on. It's an alternate version of the Comet Empire story. This series was an expansion and retelling of that story, and the events you mention happen in that version/continuity.

I think I know of some anime in such scale... but it was kinda meaningless. A single ray of hope(Yamato) is beautiful and dramatic enough for Planet Earth. And why should Earth Federation so mighty anyway? They may abuse aliens.

The only way I can think to explain the Earth forces crappy performance is that a lot of the ships were built in a hurry after Earth first learned the white comet was coming. Their euipment was either inferior, or hadn't been properly tested yet. Actually my biggest gripe with the show is why the have to use such spoilers in their episode titles.

it's probably the fact they automated the guns on the Andromeda type. notice that the Yamato hits most of it's targets. it's guns are manuely operated.

That is probably correct. You can see why Kodai threw a fit when they said they were going to automate the Yamato. It would have lost it's fighting "Spirit" with the crew replaced by the souless computer.

Can't aim either. Funny Yamato/Argo kills bunches of them from extreme range, but a whole fleet of Earth Ships can't even get one hit.

That's cuz the Andromeda wasn't hit by the Comet Empire flagship's main weapon. Also, the Earth fleet ships that blew up after only a couple of missile hits were just cruisers and destroyers which aren't nearly as tough as a battleship.

the tactical idiocy in eps 20 and 21 can be forgiven by the shear awesomeness of the battle scenes......desslocks tactics and wildstars counter attack in ep 23 more then make up for the stupidity here.....the CE seperating manics carrier fleet from bleaks main fleet? why....and gideon's forces, while they defeat bleak, are too shattered to put up much of a fight against the CE fortress when it arrives

This series makes much more sense when watching with the English subtitles and original Japanese dialogue, rather than the English dubbed version.

Shock Cannon (English dub) is actually Burst Energy Transport Cannon (Japanese Original). I could never understand how the weapon fired in one spot and yet reappears in another. Now it actually makes sense.

If you notice, the Comet Empire flagship has two S.M.I.T.E. machines on its bow. When it fires its main weapon, the energy blast is instantly transported to its target. It's Gamilon technology used to extent the range of an energy weapon rather than planes.

cuz thats a tactic, although it's dramatic in the show. the main fleet is meant for meat shield, while a small group of strike force did surprise attack. u cannot win a war with no loses, go try Dawn of War :)

i think ep 20 was based upon the battle of midway and in that battle the japanese divided the main fleet from the carrier force ( which

was destroyed)

Midway was lost because the Japanese battle plans were compromised when the US broke their encryption and discovered the diversionary tactics, ignored them, and went for the carriers.

Though in this episode the main fleet comprised mostly of capital ships is at the main battle where as the carriers are far behind; in the battle of midway it is the exact oppisite, the main fleet is far behind where as the carriers are at the front lines. Then again the technology advances so it would make sense if the carriers would have to be far away to launch their warplanes while the main fleet engages in a huge ship against ship battle.
