The QOTN is for dramatic coloraturas. Lyrics need to leave this aria alone, once & for all. If you want to hit high notes, sing Lakme, Adele, Mozart's Popoli, or any other coloratura role. The QOTN is furious & threatening to use her power over the forces of Nature to do dastardly deeds. In the dialogue right before this aria, the QOTN shoves a dagger at her daughter. You can't be sweet & play a convincing QOTN. That's just wrong. Proper diction helps create the "bite" of the character as well.

Uh...those who think this is a fast tempo... this is relatively slow compared to many performances by the best singers. Also, she's ANGRY. It would be a worse portrayal if it were slower, I promise.

Beautiful! The control on those top notes is enviable! To be able to sing those without having to force them out is amazing. To not sound "like a demented peanut vender's whistle"... makes me wish I could do that. And the dress... surprised we haven't seen it on "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding" yet!

I read that some don't like this performance. Well I'm not a singer, so I'm not going to say anything about the technique; anyway, I think that it's not correct to say she's not expressive, also because this is a record maybe for a cd, not the real part played on the scene. I would only suggest people who have not already done it to look for links that can bring to other videos (for ex. the first/the second of the column on the right). Maybe it can help you to understand what she's able to do.

My favorite part is the "Alle Bande" sequence. She sings it with perfect intonation, and all the notes are distinct, whereas so many other sopranos smudge the notes because they are so fast.
