The QOTN is for dramatic coloraturas. Lyrics need to leave this aria alone, once & for all. If you want to hit high notes, sing Lakme, Adele, Mozart's Popoli, or any other coloratura role. The QOTN is furious & threatening to use her power over the forces of Nature to do dastardly deeds. In the dialogue right before this aria, the QOTN shoves a dagger at her daughter. You can't be sweet & play a convincing QOTN. That's just wrong. Proper diction helps create the "bite" of the character as well.
Uh...those who think this is a fast tempo... this is relatively slow compared to many performances by the best singers. Also, she's ANGRY. It would be a worse portrayal if it were slower, I promise.
Beautiful! The control on those top notes is enviable! To be able to sing those without having to force them out is amazing. To not sound "like a demented peanut vender's whistle"... makes me wish I could do that. And the dress... surprised we haven't seen it on "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding" yet!
I read that some don't like this performance. Well I'm not a singer, so I'm not going to say anything about the technique; anyway, I think that it's not correct to say she's not expressive, also because this is a record maybe for a cd, not the real part played on the scene. I would only suggest people who have not already done it to look for links that can bring to other videos (for ex. the first/the second of the column on the right). Maybe it can help you to understand what she's able to do.
She has a lovely voice, but there isn't a lot of feeling to it. She's just...singing. She's supposed to be telling her daughter to kill someone or be cast out and cursed. This sounds more nice...maybe a little sad. I'm not so impressed with it.
She's definitely one of my top ten Queen of the Night, but her coloratura is a little too rushed for her to be my absolute favourite. Close to perfect, though. Amazing voice!
My favorite part is the "Alle Bande" sequence. She sings it with perfect intonation, and all the notes are distinct, whereas so many other sopranos smudge the notes because they are so fast.
@dougbalt right??!?! even other versions of talented singers can't sing that part right. <3 the dress, wish there was a video...i want to see her expressions
@sockmonkeyzruleXD sock monkey you said my thoughts perfectly. It looks unanimous that we all adore that gown, and would just love to see Luciana live, wearing such a magnificent couture.
@christyinseattle Good thing you can fit a rolling potty under that skirt! Otherwise, you'd be shit outta' luck if the party hor'deurves didn't sit right... :-)
reclamantul: The one who´s deaf here is you. Does any opera sing "hit" the notes? Or else you know nothing about opera specially Mozart. This is THE BEST version I´ve heard whatever you say
this has to be the best version i've ever heard, the orchestra has the right right tempo for the queen's internal rage and unrest and the voice is powerful impressive yet crystalline! EXCELLENT!
have you heard the lucia popp version. no one beats her top notes

Ms. Serra's voice is fantastic.
It's amazing that she can sing it so fast and in such a perfect pitch.
In my opinion however, this performance is too fast, and as a consequence it fails to show all the hate the queen was feeling.
