How did Evert got this far in the first place. What is obvious is this is her first major. What is not obvious is that she had barely swung a racket on grass courts. Virtually none of her junior tournaments were played on grass. She went on to reach the semis of every single one of the majors she played whether it was the grass of Australia, Wimbledon or right here with but one exception in the 83' Wimbledon. Now how in hell to you get that consistent, that early on a foreign surface
@BTURNER1961 Chris Evert had the most perfect foot-work of any palyer who ever swung a tennis racket. That combined with a concentration and mental toughness that were almost spookey made the surface almost irrelevant. She was pre-destined to do well on every surface, be it hard court, clay, grass, indoor carpet or crunchy granola.
looks like they both had enough fabric to make this style of tennis dress. about the ball chucking. hehe hello same dress lots a fabric again for pockets
I do remember 72! Evert hit less hard off the ground than say Connolly but was formidable on clay! Court beat her in an epic Paris final in 73.Does anyone have any of that to post?
As for King...well a great tactician as well as a fairly decent volleyer!
yeah huge difference cause if you try and swing super hard you lose control and the ball will go out, todays rackeys have the power and more important;y they dont lose precision when you swing hard like the old wooden rackets.
@jayfey77 I think the biggest difference between using a wood racquet and a modern graphite composite racquet is that you HAD to have nearly perfect technique to be successful day-in-day-out. Modern players don't have nearly the form of past players. Maybe Federer and Graf, maybe.
What a match! This is not how I imagined it: I thought Chrissie was maybe a little bit overwhelmed by the occasion and the more experienced and determined King basically owned her. But I think the double-bounce controversy helped BJK by firing her up. She had lost seven points in a row after being 40-0 up - she must have been on the verge of meltdown, but the umpire seemed to get her dander up and the Old Lady played with fire in her belly. Note - Chrissie has a pretty handy serve on grass!
there are some interesting comments and facts posted.
i was wondering, nowadays, when a ball falls out of a player's pocket, the point is called a let and it is replayed. obviously here, in this video, there were numerous times where this happened, but there was no call in response.
just out of curiosity, was there a rule about this? or was it just, blah?
Thank you for uploading!! Always wanted to watch this match. King was terrfied to lose this match as it could have ruined the tour a professional losing to an amateur.
There were a lot of interesting issues swirling round in this match. Billie Jean felt that she had to beat Chrissie because at that point, she felt Chrissie represented the 'establishment.'
My favourite quote from this match was when they were walking on court Billie said to Chris "You are riding on the crest of a wave. Enjoy it while you can"
Chris Evert was very pretty, almost beautiful, when she was this age.
