  • This has got to be the best interpretation of Or Sai Chi L'Onore. No doubt Eleanor Steber was a great Mozartian soprano. Her voice was big and heavy but very lyric and with excellent technique. She is intense here, and very few sopranos sing it this way (most take on a light lyric approach which is totally wrong for the angry intensity of this scene) soprano Edda Moser is another dramatic Mozartian soprano who sings it this good. Brava Steber

  • @AmericanEvita Interesting that you consider her "dramatic" She herself considered herself a full lyric with coloratura tendencies. The old school style has been watered down in the last 40 or so years. This what a lyric sounded like in the mid 1900s. Not a lot of teachers out there teaching the full sound anymore most don't know how and are afraid to unleash the beast. But there are some old harshaw students that are quite wonderful teachers hanging about.

  • Simply fabulous!

  • Phenomally talented, a great mozartian, every word counts with her! She just gives her all every time.

  • Can anyone in the world match this ?

  • She was one of the greatest sopranos this country has ever produced. There is not anyone out here today that can sing like this. Just imagine the days when you could hear Steber at the Met on a regular basis. WOW. Sometimes I wish I could trvel back in time and hear all the great singers like Steber, Ponselle, Rethberg, Sayao, Bjorling, Caruso. Today they no longer have the great teachers to pass along the art of great singing. Todays singersDO NOT HAVE A CLUE!! Steber was simply GLORIOUS!!!!

  • @Giovannifabuloso And obviously you're an expert on singing. If you have such a clue, please be sure to let me know when your debut at the Met is.

  • @mattyslipp I had my debut at the MET some time ago.

  • This is how this scene goes! Bravi tutti! Oh, if I had a time machine and could go back to witness some of these memorable performances! Fortunately we have YouTube.

  • Freaking Wow..... Just. the most. WOW. the power, the beauty, the drama.... just amazing.

  • FIERCE...this is an extremely difficult aria to sing...you can tell, it sits up high, and there's no letting up...the soprano has to make some big sounds...I thought for a second, "after the huge recit, she might get too tired to hang in until the finish line..." Nothing could be further from the truth!!! Eleanor Steber was a soprano on Wheaties...sho' nuff...FEARLESS

  • Davanti a cotanto splendore, le dive di cartapesta di oggi dovrebbero ritirarsi a vita privata.

  • onegin gracias, the lovely and magnificent Ms Steber, a classic to be regarded

  • FAB FAB FAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Semplicemente GRANDE!

  • For my money, the greatest soprano America ever produced.

  • I am sitting in the laundrymat trying not to cry! this is so gripping! I have always undervalued Eleanor Steber. Her voice is almost overwhelming! Thanks for the post!

  • She was an American Treasure. Brava Steber. Real singing.

  • Brava Steber! Still the best!

  • An absolute jewel! Everything I could ask for in this aria! BRAVA!

  • Steber was one of a kind. Amazing.

  • Es la primera vez que hago un comentario, pero no he podido dejar de hacerlo. La Sra. Steber me parece increíble, magnífica.

Muchas gracias por esta grabación, es una joya!

  • preciosos video!! felicidades ;)

  • Steber was an amazing singer, especially skilled in Mozart. She had great coloratura skills. As her voice evolved into a fuller sound, she became particularly well suited to the more dramatic Mozart roles (Fiordiligi, Donna Anna, etc.)

  • Wow, what brave, courageous singing! Love it!
