That's what I once thought. But now I think, as you say in your other comment, it's only marginary. There are parallels one can't deny, but the main theme is success and competition and what it does to individuals and personal relationships, just in in general, and set against the background of the Cold War.

Well, "but we go on pretending stories like ours have happy endings". That came true only in the last few years with the success of Mamma Mia. Like a belated happy ending.

@blueeightysix So true, it`s a good and well thought out and planned story, and Rice didn`t have anything to do with ABBA(as far as i know), and he was the one writing the lyrics. I just got puzzled with that thought.

I don`t think the hole musical is about the time in Abba, just some of the nuances. It must have been a lot of memories from the Abba time, and they all went thru break-ups with their partner in love and buisness.

For some reason i think that Chess is a settlement for the Abba periode. There are 2 women and 2 men in Chess, like in Abba.

I love this London Cast recording!! Although it was a bit odd that the NY Broadway version had different songs and different words to some of the other songs!

Both are good in my opinion - different but good!

Yes, I listened to it on cassette. Man, those were the good old days when there were so many musicals available on cassette! I bought Chess, Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera, and I think later Les Mis. 80s was the golden period of the musicals! Well and so many other good things. :)))
