@thunderbirdlver agreed, but new trucks are great too if they are nice trucks. of coures some trucks new and old suck, some trucks are great new and old.
@Seattlecarnut I dont know I like the gearshift on the steering column, but more so with automatics. standard on column is nice too. maybe its that it has less room and newer vehicles need more room for more gears.
I think Renault may have 4 and 5 on the tree options still. Currently none of the US companies have them...actually the only way to get a new standard on a full size is I believe with the Cummins, everyone has gone to the Autos. The standard trucks are unfortunately, slowly going the way of the dodo's.
@gliderp to the best of my knowledge Ford F150 had an available option for 3 on the tree as late as 1986 or 87. Very few trucks were sold in 86 with this option. I think Chevy offered it in half ton truck into the early 80's as well. An interesting footnote on Ford trucks in 86 or 87 (not absolutely sure on the exact year) you could have 3 or tree, 4 on floor or 5speed on floor.
@makealilmoney No, I thought he said he was partin it out, I had a truck that has a 3 on the tree, an 84, but I sold it and the guy took it out and put a 4 spd in it instead.
My grandfather had a 1965-66 Chevy pickup truck that had a 3 on the tree. I was rather young when he had the truck, but I remember it. Why most vehicles these days don't have manual shift transmission, let alone manual shift with a gear shift on the steering column. I would've thought that it would make room either for a bench seat, or to put something between the driver and front passenger seat.
Awesome video! No, you don't see column-mounted shifters, let alone column-mounted manual shifter. I would think it'd be easier to drive than if the shifter were on the floor, since you don't have to look to the floor to shift. I've never driven one with a column-mounted manual shifter, but would eventually like to.
@chevygearhead454 I'm not against driving manual shift cars. My first car, a Toyota MR2 had a 5 sp. on the floor. I've always found it interesting to drive, and would give anything to find someone in my area who owns a car with a column-mounted manual gear shift.
@Seattlecarnut im not saying ur against em i just meant most ppl arnt staring at the shifter when they shift unless they miss a gear or something but cool car i was lookin for an mr2 but didnt get the money in time
@chevygearhead454 I wasn't accusing you of saying that I'm against driving manual shift. I've always liked cars that have manual shift transmission. My grandfather had a 1964 or 65 Chevy pickup truck with a 3 on the tree transmission. I was rather young when he had the truck, but I remember it. It's too bad he sold that truck when he did. I would've loved to learned to drive it. Oh well. That happens, eh?
@Seattlecarnut oh my bad then haha, yah 3 speeds are actually fairly fun to drive we had a grain truc with 3 on the tree and that thing had laods of tourque in first but id still prefer a 4 or 5 speed on the floor
Interesting, I've always wondered how the column shift manual trannies shifted. Doesn't look quite as fun as a floor shift manual, but could still be fun I suppose.
I'm looking into getting an older van, and some have manual trannies, so I thought I'd better look into this.
my moms 58 chevy apache has it.. I always have to double clutch from first to neutral then clutch in from neutral to 2nd or it grinds bad.. looks like your's shifts pretty smooth.. 3 on the tree ftw
I have a 79 C-10 with this 3 on the tree. It is worn out tho and will no longer shift. I understand its a common problem with these. I sold the transmission (apparently is more popular than i thought) and am converting to auto unfortunately. I dont want to cut a hole in the floor for a 4 in the floor.
NIce vid i am in the process of buying a 72 chevy 1500 and it will be my first vehicle and its 3 on the tree and i wasnt sure how it worked its not that bad i see ...
Manual transmission with column shifters are still around youll be pleased to hear , mostly on Japanese pickups and vans. I currently drive a 1999 Vauxhall Midi van ( actually a re badged Isuzu van ) here in the UK which has a 5 speed column shift. The company also has some 2 wheel drive Nissan pickups ( new ones ) with 5 speed on the column. I love column shifters , great fun to drive and I learned to drive on one on a Toyota pickup in fact Ive never had a vehicle with floor shift.
i had a three on the tree in my old 65 chevy long bed fixed it up a little and sold it for bank i just had to fix the shift stuff tighen it up and makr new bushins for it worked great after that loved messin around with it just a six cylinder but crap cool truck for sure
my buddy offered to let me drive his beautiful old ford with a column shift, i turned him down but took a ride with him and damn it was simpler than i thought. I drive standards daily and just thought it was neat seeing the way it was set up.
Hi..I am 48 years old and can say we do in US have the shift on column, but not for the above [read:"Manuals], only autos. I rememebr the sticks on column, too, Even the GMC Greyhound Silversdies(tms) had them..but four (and the "hold a switch, then shift from 1-2 for reverse" solenoid deal just like on the ear's other, plain floor shifted buses.)
Hello Chaosforscher. I am 54 years old, am American, and I remember when I was young everybody had a shift on the column. My dad had a 1955 plymouth column shift. I think the column shift vanished because it just looked more sporty and European as a stick. It can't think of any other reason because with a stick shift on a console three people can't sit in the front, as was so common in the old days. I'd be interested to know if anyone has other opinions on this.
Neat. I always wanted to see one of these in action. I always wondered if it would be a little inconvenient to change gears with a shifter on the column instead of on the floor, but it doesn't look too bad.
I've seen a lot of these trucks with the column shifted 3 speed and the inline six cylinder engine. Unfortunately, they were all dead and in the junkyard where I could not drive them. Those trucks did have a column position indicator, though.
3 on the tree is rare in one of these trucks(it was even offered in some 3/4 ton 4x4's) When I first looked at this truck and saw it was a 3 spd I was expecting a 250 I6(the 292 I6 was only used in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks). But it had a 307 V8 instead :) This is my daily driver, until I get one of my diesels running.
The screwdriver is because the eject mechanism jammed and I didn't have a needlenose pliers to pry the tape out. That was so I could listen to the radio. (I have fixed it since then)
hahahahaha I had to do the screwdriver trick to the tape player on my 1986 pontiac. Here is how I got the stuck tape out. Just keep pressing the eject button very, very, fast over and over again for like a minute. keep trying this from time to time. It may just work for you.
