One thing seemed kinda weird to me though. New York giving out condoms. I mean, the idea is fine and all that but seriously.. I kinda doubt that the price of condoms is the biggest issue in the USA. lol Doesn't it just promote a "It's ok to be a cheap ass." kinda feeling? :P

If you get your girlfriend pregnant because condoms are too expensive for you, there's something horribly wrong with you. ;D

I don't know why they're laughing when they see the kid with the self made computer. When we were kids we would always create paper versions of gameboys and stuff. In every nintendo mag all around the world you can see kids submitting them. They don't seem to know a lot about kids, it would have been surprising if the kid wouldn't have made one.

Well, gusphraba, I work with kids for a living, and I laughed because the picture was cute. The kid had a huge grin. It was the nature of the picture that made me laugh, not the notion of a kid making his own little paper computer.

Yeah because giving them a $100 piece of tech isn't a handout. These people are trying to bring third-world nations to first-world status completely backwards. Literacy, healthcare, agriculture, government; these things need to come first. Walk before you run. We could also help x-African country-x develop a space program, but I bet ironing out some other problems like corrupt government, civil wars/genocide, and pandemics of disease should come first.

I agree a lot of these people need food, shelter etc, but what good are we doing to only ever give htem handouts. So we feed em and cloth em for a month then what? more money to feed and cloth them.

At least this guy is trying to improve there lives through technology and knowledge. Perhaps if they learn and educate themselves they will grow up to be better off then there parents were.

Seeing as the west has literally lived off the blood of the majority of the nations in the world I don't see any problem with doing both.

Give handouts and educate them. It's the least we can do for absolutely raping their culture, land, and people.

People are inherently self serving, thus many look at how much their rich country is giving, it might be wise to look at how your rich country came into all that wealth in the first place.

Blood is very base, has very little nutritional value, many diseases are spread through the blood, and there are not a lot of practical uses to live on blood. I think you mean "figuratively", right?

Exactly. Alot less people will be starving and in poverty if their are more educated children able to pull themselves out of poverty. Why give someone fish when you can teach them too right. Makes much more sense than just handing them food thats going to be taken away from them by fucked up waring factions.

Thats the difficult question. You cannot educate people who do not want to be educated. Perfect example: Creationists/ID theorists. Really, the only way to educate is to teach the children. They're able to absorb much more information a lot easier than adults. Which is why educating the children would be the best way to go. They learn, then help. Only way to fix a nation is to have the people of that nation help out.

Mary Lou Jepsen did the real design and innovation work for the OLPC (XO1) aka $100 laptop.. All he did was the shell.. which admittedly is a pretty nice design. But TBH I think this guy is more style than substance.
