Jailbreaking is a good thing. It allows you to do so much more with your iPhone (or iPod touch). However, if you're concerned, Apple is expected to officially allow native applications in late February when the SDK comes out. This will be easier (and possibly safer) than jailbreaking.

MANUALLY jailbreaking it difficult. I made this back when they first figured out how to jailbreak the iPod touch, using Terminal and SSH. Now, you can just visit jailbreakme dot com.
