awesome stuff. im 34 and i just got back into it for the last year after 15 years off the board. its all coming back and i probably skate better now then i use too and have learnt some new stuff but the main thing is its just healthy and fun.
Awesome. 35 here, and looking at getting back in. Just strarted drooling over the Powell Peralta re-issues. A 10" wide pig shaped Bones Ripper deck with Indies and G-Bones is on the way.
Hey old man! you should get a new design board ! after you get used to it they are easier to skate! ...I skate to but I am only 39....lol...keep rockin bro!!!
Love it! I'm still skating now and then down under here in australia , have done so for more than 20 years! I've sessioned with Natas, Tony, Jason Lee, Gator and other ledgends in my time and I'm sure those guys get out for a roll now and then , even if they cant quite pull off the tricks as good as they used too! AT 37 I've still got a few lip tricks up my sleve. That skate park looks smooth as, would love to rip it up there!
@jazzmaster270 Master park builder Wally Hollyday built that park, the transition are extremely smooth. Vertical skating seems to have disappeared at a lot of today's community parks....too bad too.
Props to ya for doing it! Been trying to get back to it myself creaping up on 4-0. One thing I will not be doing tho is wearing a sweater vest...sry...put on an old Have You Seen Chin or Ratbones shirt bro...
@ChrisJPren When you head from the golf course to the skatepark you don't always have time to change!! I thought that looked a bit goofy as well, but I thought I might look a bit more silly trying to look like I was 13 years old too...it was bad enough that I was there riding my 25 year old board...this was 7 years ago, so maybe it's time I head back out, haven't skated since that day!! But I did buy a new board...simply because I could!! Thanks!!
I don't see whats so big about skating at the age of 40 well ofcourse it's fun that you still skate :) but at my local skatepark the vertskaters are mostly around 43-47 and they're doing big airs, handplants etc.
@andree1001 Whenever I am out of town I check out local parks, but never have my board or gear with me...cost prohibitive to buy new every time, but I agree, I see more and more 40+ year old guys skating...and 9 times out of 10 they skate far better than the kids...street skating just isn't and never has been my thing...I only skated the streets to get to our local ramps...not kick-flipping...the occasional curb grind or something like that was OK, but overall it was boring vs. pools/ramps.
@andree1001 I think more the idea here is that, at that point when I was 40 I hadn't skated in over 20 years...unlike riding a bicycle, skateboarding is something that sort of fades away...so in the grand scheme of things, skating for the first day in over 20 years wasn't too bad...and handplants and big airs (which I used to rip at Apple Skate Park in Columbus OH) wasn't in the quiver...I have to work to make a living and skate accidents are frowned on at my age!!
I use the term "vertical" a little loosely here, it simply means it's not street skating, or skating rails. The pool isn't "vertical" but it certainly is close to vertical...another couple inches of transition would make it vertical...not to nitpick, but "nowhere" isn't really correct either.
I recently got back into skating, after a 10 year break, I am 36 now and 10 years behind a PC took it's toll. So I started skating again and am wondering why I ever stopped in the first place?
@azpunkazme good on ya. i just celebrated my 36th. now let's go huck our old ass, unpracticed selves down a flight of stairs. ;) remember slappies, no-complies, powerslides and 180 ollies to pivot? i bet you will- see, our vertical elevation and bag of tricks starts us out here whenever we put the stick in the corner for too long....long live the night sesh and your local transition spots...welcome back.
i just brought me a screming hand santa cruz havnt skated since early 90's im 37 nw me and my son skate at da parks no fancy stuff for me just cruz round the bowl il leave it up too mi son lol
Dude, I'm 48.... And skate vert, street, freestyle, anything goes...!
Venice Beach locals kick ass.. I know guys here at 50 that do inverts over coping in the deep end...! No pads.. You are still a youngster..! Keep it up..
Swing by Venice Beach skate park and get some schooling.. Old School..!
Drop some pounds and shred with the big dogs.....!
ok now, skaters nowadays, before you start frowning and thinking really hard, that is a real skateboard ok, yes, its not a home made 1, thats wat all the legends learnt on, ok? now take deep breathes and calm tour brain down.
@tommywrenn exactly! the ollie sh!t makes it a whole new ballgame. a much lighter feel. i'm 38 and just moving into that world too. about time, but better late than never!
I'm 44 and still skating (badly). I try and skate alone on our local mini ramp as the I think I freak out the youngsters. One asked me the other day if I was having a mid-life crisis. Maybe I am son, maybe I am.
You are the man! I'm in my 30s and still skating. Real boarders are out there on skateboards, snow and surfboards well into their 50s and 60s. Surfing is timeless.
Christian Hosoi, Stevie Caballero, Lance Mountain, Tony Hawk, Lester Kasai, Jeff Grosso, Steve Steadam, McGill, Hawk.. ALL those legends are still riding and having a blast.
Caballero is 46 and better than ever. Check him and Hosoi fly high in the 2010 Vans Combi-Pool competition. Keep riding!
@TheMarzelloExperienc it's like with rock musicians, when the first generation of dudes progressed, everybody said "what are you still doing that for?" but the keith richards still rocks and he's like 70 and half dead.
so we got a whole world to teach that we're gonna skate till we're 6 feet under!
Riding skateboards is fun! maybe just carve around OR try to re-learn some tricks you could do "back in the day". People are always so quick to tell you "no" or You can't" or make fun of you...(and I'm not just talking about skateboarding) DO WHAT YOU WANT! Skateboarding has always been cool... probably always will be.
Sweet, I'm 34 and skated back in 1987-1990. My friend asked me 2 weeks ago to join him in skating again so we went to the public skate park and busted our asses, but I think if we practiced through the summer we could get our game back.
@Redlantern75 you can. i did just that. i've been back at it for a year after a 23 year break, and slowly but surely i'm kickin ass and (also thanks to doing yoga now) i'm better than before! and learning ollie stuff too
I'm 30 and never gave up skating but I was starting to think about giving up,I watched this video and thought fuck it if you can still do it into your 40s so can I !
hell yeah man!!!! I'm 33 and just started again after about 5or 6 years of not skating. It hurts alot more in the morning now...but is fun as hell. But on the bad side, ya almost gotta relearn everything again......
Rock it dude, I'm turning 45 this year, getting back on my board about 7 years ago after a 20+ year break was a life changeing experience for me (for the better).
Awesome. I tried to show off for my nephew 2 summers ago and while I didn't wipe out, I woke up the next day stiff as a board! LOL Not bad for 34 and being off the board 18 yrs now.
Only since year 2005 did government build a few good skateparks, like 20 years behind. There will be much older skaters because when you start young you don't give up the new age skateparks until your at least 65 years old. Maybe the old ones but not these new ones. It's the best sport by far. It can be like others but much more. More like others can be like skating but not even close just similar.
get a board set up slightly on the big side for you- big fast soft wheels- fast bearings- and start pushing. that's it, that's my fitness/weightloss/mid-life crisis solution to you. skate at night again- make the neighbors secretly jealous.
then get your ass back on :) all i can say after 3 years of it being able to do almost everytrick is dont stop and if u do when u restart dont care what other pple think
Pretty cool! Us old guys have got to get back on board...Im stil learning tricks at 44! Try Mctwist when your 44...they fuckin hurt when you bail now.. but I will make before the year is up! You are only as OLD as you want to be.
As I then took a short break to inspect how much skin had been removed from my right arm I also realised I never did any frontside-grind-to-tail-lean-back tricks back in the day.
So, in short I had a great time and will have another go tomorrow, and I actually made some tricks stick. My buddys 6 year old even told me that i'm pretty good. Smart kid.
On the 4' mini ramp a few low-transition ollie to fakie's put elbow pads on my should-buy list. I don't know what it's called but I figured a "like-back-in-the-days" 5-0 frontside grind to tail while leaning back on the coping with my back hand would impress my buddy and his kid. They both gasped as I came very close to dive headfirst off the back end of the platform of the mini.
I'm picking up skateboarding again at 33 and just got home from a session. On a micro, micro, micro garage ramp I chickened out of a nose stall and turned it into a "OMG are you allright?" from my buddy after a full body slam on the concrete floor. I was allright and soon followed up with a 180 frontside boneless off the side of the transition and bruised my left butt cheek. A fakie axle stall attempt turned into a reminder from my left knee that I had removed my knee pads. I put them back on.
Hey man, i'm 34, 3 weeks back into skating again, same as you, doing r&r's, rock fakies, 50/50's, I got a 8.75 ray rod reissue, kinda best of both worlds, great for pool skating. Keep it up
The park is in South Bend, Indiana. It's a Wally Hollyday Design...he's the same guy that designed the famous indoor park I skated in Columbus, Ohio when I was a teenager, Apple Skate Park.
I started skating when I was about 10 or 11...was lucky enough to skate in Columbus, Ohio where we had Apple Skate Park for the 18 months it was open. Stopped skating when I was in college, but always kept my board...found out this park was near my home and decided to try it out. I'm 45 now and haven't skated since the day this was filmed...might go out and try it again...actually bought a new board I haven't even used.
keep it up... age's got nothing to do with... heaps of guys still rip it up no matter what age... hosoi is like 42 and the rest of that crew are all up there.... and still kill it.
The wheels I am skating on in this video are Gyro's...they were pretty high tech back in the day, they have an aluminum hub to precision seat the bearings...they were very fast in their day. Not sure of the durameter, but they weren't considered a soft compound. I don't like really hard, loud urethane wheels.
I'm 38 and still playing in punk bands...and I don't expect to stop anytime soon. Great to see all you guys still skatin' in your late 30's, too. Right on, brothers!
It's my Santa Cruz Steve Olsen, I wish they would a re-issue of it...doesn't look like Olsen and Santa Cruz are on terms these days or I think it would have happened.
Way to go MrOffshore...I turned 39 in Jan and just built a ramp in my backyard. Haven't been on a board in about 16 yrs. Every night I pop a couple Advils and laydown on a heating pad but it feels great to be out there again huh?
I did take a pretty nasty spill...on some of the smaller stuff, but just slammed my body hard...I didn't get up nearly as quickly as I did when I was younger...that's where I really feel the age coming on...and to be truthful I seriously hurt for about 6 months after that fall....it sucked.
I started skating when I was 10, way back in the Jason Jesse, Natas, Gonz Hosoi days. Sad thing is, I have'nt skated in 7 years.
This vid has really inspired me, I have been thinking about skating again and this video proves I could still do it. Maybe no more 360 flippery, but that does'nt matter. Life was better when I skated, don't know why I stopped. I just bought a new Zero setup of eBay and I am going to start up as soon as it arrives.
that's cool , i've just got back into it... tre flips aint gonna happend , but cruising the park every evening after work really helps cope with life... :0)
Post some videos of your skating, I think people get a big kick out of it...skating wasn't just something we did back then, it was a total lifestyle thing. You lived it. Good luck and where your pads and helmet, if you're like me, you're going to be needing that protection!
Just found your clips man :) Makes me extra psyched to get back on the board this summer .. I rode BMX from about 12 to 35, and skated in between, but now that I"m in my 40's I can see and feel the magic that is skateboarding! Rode into town the other day, cruising past shoppers young and old, stopped for a coffee too ha ha, soooo many people asked me if it was my board. Even guys younger than me who never got into it. Keep posting them man and i'll keep watching. John
I'm 45. This guy looks like he a STARTED skating at 40. Sketchy

Smart kid.
MPETE1976 2 years ago

I put them back on.

valken48 2 years ago
The park is in South Bend, Indiana. It's a Wally Hollyday Design...he's the same guy that designed the famous indoor park I skated in Columbus, Ohio when I was a teenager, Apple Skate Park.

i'm 35 and still skate and still get kick out of parking lots........REMEMBER THE STICKER WE ALL HAD IN THE 1980's SKATE OR DIE thanks for the video

still ??? How long have you skated ? :D
DrSmurfNr1 2 years ago
I started skating when I was about 10 or 11...was lucky enough to skate in Columbus, Ohio where we had Apple Skate Park for the 18 months it was open. Stopped skating when I was in college, but always kept my board...found out this park was near my home and decided to try it out. I'm 45 now and haven't skated since the day this was filmed...might go out and try it again...actually bought a new board I haven't even used.

so are soft wheels still good for bowls can they go fast still
RealEros1 2 years ago
The wheels I am skating on in this video are Gyro's...they were pretty high tech back in the day, they have an aluminum hub to precision seat the bearings...they were very fast in their day. Not sure of the durameter, but they weren't considered a soft compound. I don't like really hard, loud urethane wheels.

it would be scary to see that guy take a spill
kylebowler 3 years ago
I did take a pretty nasty spill...on some of the smaller stuff, but just slammed my body hard...I didn't get up nearly as quickly as I did when I was younger...that's where I really feel the age coming on...and to be truthful I seriously hurt for about 6 months after that fall....it sucked.

Forgot to mention - skating is also great for spinal mobility and core fitness. So would you rather go to the gym or ollie a few curbs ? :)

Nice one!
Cheers

John
