It takes getting used to arching the back slightly to push the traps into the bench but damn it I put 30 lbs on my bench the first session I tried it! one thing to note,by "try something different" he means try it for about a month.still not improving,then try something else for a month.i see so many guys try something workout to workout and keep complaining that nothing's helping their problem.
I know Im not Dave, but the point he was trying to make is that beginners just need to get in the gym and lift and not worry so much about "X" percentage of weight or "X" amount of volume; I know he says to vary your rep range, and that is because its another way to progress, but ultimately just putting more weight on the bar week after week=consistency=gains
