he could had shot the tire out, broke the window with baton like I have seen them do in most situations similar to this to gain control of the driver. There was a lot of things the cop could had done to avoid this and most weapons in a police car are either locked or in the trunk. There was no excuse for this.

I got some replies to my comment and decided to watch again. I had thought there was already a pursuit that led them to where they where. The officer did use excessive force in my opinion. And you're right he skipped the force continuum pretty much completely. I say this also not knowing the backround of the man shot, past charges and so forth. It could've been handled differently, on the other hand the man couldve decided not to gamble with his life.

There is no constitutional requirement to climb a use of force continuum to deadly force. That is why departments are getting away from them. Suspect actions dictate force level. You can't know from this video what was happening in the vehicle and there is no statement by officer what he saw.

3. pepper spray
4. taser
5. less than lethal rounds if available

Unless its a long chase and they have time to get the shotgun with the less than lethal projectiles, its gonna go straight to deadly force, and keep in mind the officer usually has literally a split second to make these decisions. I'm my opinion this officer skipped to deadly force.

And you're right he skipped the force continuum pretty much completely. I say this also not knowing the backround of the man shot, past charges and so forth. 3. pepper spray
4. taser
5. less than lethal rounds if available
6. deadly force
Unless its a long chase and they have time to get the shotgun with the less than lethal projectiles, its gonna go straight to deadly force, and keep in mind the officer usually has literally a split second to make these decisions. I'm my opinion this officer skipped to deadly force.

If I run from the police, wreck a car, put everyone in danger, then jump in a police car and try to take-off then I realize that there is a VERY good possibility that im going to get hurt or maybe even killed. If you choose that lifestyle than you have to except the consequences that come with it.

@TomRock81 i realize there are weapons in cop cars. as far as the guy running and putting everybody else in danger, there has been many people hurt and killed from cops creating high speed pursuits through populated areas chasing people for petty annie crimes just because of the cops "how dare you run from me and not obey" attitude, thats why some states require their police to call off the chase at that point. we both know the cop shot the guy because he was pissed about stealing the car
