For me, the only possible meaning i could hope to fashion out of life is under the assumption that there is no "objective, predetermined" meaning to life. In other words, if there's already a meaning to existence just waiting to be discovered, how pointless! How meaningless!
There needs to be no meaning to existence whatsoever for there to be any hope of fashioning one for oneself.
Freedom within a vaccum of nothingness is where creation is most furtile. God, give me a meaningless existence!
in a discussion about the meaning of life, what do you gain by entering God into the conversation? The existence of a God is irrelevant to the real question. If the question is to be taken on a deeper lever of "life" into "existence"; "being" itself, then God does nothing for this discussion. At best, it delivers us the question "What's the meaning/purpose of God?" which of course is impossible to even hope for an answer to. Again, existence is more profound than any God that might inhabit it
The meaning of life is to secure the existance of our speacies and other life forms and to us become something higher than we are now, so that we may attain new knowlage of the universe and use it to fulfil tasks mentioned before.
Even though they had kids, they (landlords were completely unconnected to eachother btw) left large amount to my dad. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 400,000 net assets in land we farm and a house that we sold. This is our story and it's 100% true and more serious then I can really portray in two comments.. But even before that, I have always just had the feeling of the presence of God despite my actions often not being what many would consider 'christian'.
I'm an atheist. I think the question itself isn't properly worded. I have an article on the meaning of life on my blog. Link is on my youtube channel. Or Just search google for "meaning of life pointless question?" and include my name "jaywalker"
To me, the idea of a meaning of life means nothing, because when you life for "something" (like your meaning) then you are no longer living for yourself, but rather for an idea of whatlife is for you... Do I make any sense? haha:)
Kaila, I really liked your views, they are paralleled in the knowledge spectrum with paganism. ReinaSiS I like your view as well though my personal view is somewhat different. I believe we should live for ourselves, just as we live for others. Even though I'm Christian, I do not believe my world should revolve around God. I think God revolves around US for a reason. Live while we are here, and in the next life, live for Him. Afterall, wouldn't we all just be angels if that was the case?
What I am saying is live for yourself... nothing else, becuase then there is no reason for life at all. I agree with you... I am a Christian too, but I also think that we shouldn't revolove around God, but rather look to Him as influence. I think that living for anything takes you away from yourself, becuase without yourself, there is no life. You know what I am saying? or do I make no sense? haha...
There is no true meaning to life, becuase everyday there is a NEW meaning. We cannot find something that we believe is the "true" meaning and stick to it for the rest of our lives, becuase what if 2 minutes down the road it changes? Then that becomes our new meaning. But, then there are thinks like what you said, where we need to question everything. What if, however, you come to a point where questioning get you no where and you just have to break down and believe?
Good words friend... As for final sentence, excellent question!!! Still, I will not simply "break down" and just believe, I will always ask questions, but if they get me nowhere, I will re-evaulate my questions... Maybe I am asking the wrong ones.
Yea, I really can't explain it honestly. My dad is the best man i've ever known, and he's a down to earth, open-minded, loving man. He would drive 35 miles to get you a bottle of cough medicine in the middle of the night. Hard working farmer. We had tough times, parents nearly couldn't afford us any gifts one year. Still gave $50 weekly for church. My dad was strong throughout, and prayed, and jackpot. Very soon after, both landlords of my father passed.
to know God and to make Him known... that is too profound to be really understsood- its a simple statement but the logical outworking breaks the brain
it would be completley subjective and without actual meaning- so yes to the individual but no to the actual purpose (if any) of the universe... if pain and suffering wasnt meant to teach us and make us stronger then it is completley without meaning, if joy is really just a passing moment in a eternity of nothingness then that is the most meaningless existence I can think of....what say you?
Mmmm. Nice thoughts friend. I would say the same with god... to the individual but not to the actual purpose (if any) of the universe. I do not think the question can be answered, at least not as a universal... I feel we all GIVE ourselves meaning and purpose... it may not surface until late in life, or never, but we are each god in every sense of the word.
Joy and pain are not meaningless, however, they would be if the other did not exist. I have no fear of death and to be honest, I think my meaning of life changes as I do...
" I think my meaning of life changes as I do... "- profoundly subjective I must say, but I am not one to totally exclude subjective evidence, would you consider yourself an atheist?
I would be confused if one based the meaning of their life on objectivity... the meaning of life is simply a subjective question.
As for being considered an athesit, I do not openly call myself one, but compared to your beliefs, you may see me as one... I could care less...
As for subjective evidence... if you claim evidence of god in personal revelations, I would certainly discredit it as evidence. Scientific evidence is based on observable phenomena. Personal revelations are just that.
no no no.... I shouldve haven come across better than what I did. My whole point was that subjective evidence CAN be valid. After all, if we cant trust our own expirence to an extent, what can we trust? I see how my comment came off as ignorant, I m getting a camera and stuff together to start making vids, maybe we can communicate better then...I was just sort of half-assuming that you were an atheist, but I guess maybe a better way to ask is:do you acknowledge the existence of anything immaterial
No worries friend. I am glad you plan to make videos, that is great news. I do not agree that subjective "experience" can be called evidence. You should not always believe what you see and hear... our mind has a way of seeing and hearing what it wants. A good example is when someone is spun around in a chair blindfolded, told to remove the blindfold when they feel they have stopped spinning. The person will always remove the blinfold prematurely, due to the hairs in the ears that manage balance.
Like farvision said, if there's no God, then we only ASSIGN meaning.
And like you said, we should be creating knowledge. I really think that we should jsut enjoy life and live for today. Now, I don't mean we should kill hookers and do cocaine and cheat on our wives, but simply try and make the world a better place for us and everyone else, because, if this is the only life, then why would we waste it trying to appease some magic fairy?
Seems to me it's pretty clear that we evolved. There is no particular direction to that, it just happens. So there is no ultimate meaning. Given that we can assign meanings. I think this is where everyone will eventually have to wind up.
