pitching is the hardest thing to do....and getting hit with the ball is not an uncommon thing. Ive been hit in the chin, arm, shin, and many other places and i play high school softball. when its hit hard and fast enough right at you that close, you have hardly any time to react. some umpires dont allow a mask for the pitcher. and its only in very few cases but ive come across some. if your complaining on how he cant play his position, how bout you try to. Today someone hit a line drive that happened to be in the exact spot to the millimeter that my glove was. I never saw it hit and I didn't even squeeze when it went in my glove. Of course, this is imaginary because no lines are drawn. Second, I would have checked his bat afterwards. ASA states anytime a batter uses an illegal bat, and before the next pitch, the hit is a dead-ball, batter is out, and removed from the game. From just watching the video, the guy was trying to hit the pitcher; hope pitcher was ok after.

Yes baseballs are denser and pitched faster, but the pitcher is also 10-20 father away and coming off of a mound which allows him to square up to field easier.
I've done both (I pitch for a semi-pro team in Florida) and I've pitched several slow pitch games and I'll tell you that it's easier to set up to field after a pitch in baseball. Not to mention the hitter is less likely to take it directly up the middle back at me.

the bat designs have been more enforced lately to make the ball go no faster than 98 MPH "see Miken Freak 98" BUT if this league is like my league you always have a few teams to "doctor" the bat to increase the flight of a ball. you can do this by taking the end cap off the bat and honing or shaving the bat which increases the velocity by reducing the wall for a bigger spring. This is not a smart thing to do but people do it
in highschool we have either aluminum, H&H composite/aluminum, or full on composite such as a CF3, then there are the wood bat tournaments though those are a rarity nowadays.

Kneepads, shinguards, cup, and helmet. They need to make this mandatory for pitchers in all leagues. No pitcher needs to lose time at work or school because of softball.
