In comes Jesus, proclaimed by a High Priest's son as the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! Caiaphas ceremonially defiled himself during the interrogation when he tore his robe(for one) which passed selection to another - John the baptist.

this is (I think) four days before passover. Four days before passover, the passover lamb that took away the sins of the nation for the year was carried by the High Priest through that gate. That's why there was such a large waiting crowd with branches and "robes". They were waiting for the lamb selected by the high priest from the stables in Bethlehem -that is where the passover lambs were raised.
