Retail gasoline prices haven't fallen in 35 days, rising Thursday to a national average of $3.74 per gallon. Over the five weeks prices have increased 37 cents per gallon or 11 percent. Prices are being driven by the price of oil. They have never been so high at this time of the year.
Wholesale gasoline futures rose 2 percent to finish at $3.35 per gallon, suggesting that retail prices will keep rising in the coming days. Typically gasoline prices rise in spring as demand rises and refiners begin to make expensive summer blends of gasoline required to meet clean air laws.
The price of West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. oil used as a benchmark, rose $1.77 to end at $108.84 a barrel in New York. Brent crude, which is imported by many U.S. refiners to make gasoline, rose $3.54 to finish at $126.20 a barrel in London.
Oil prices have risen 9 percent this year because global demand is high and supplies have been disrupted in South Sudan, Syria and elsewhere. There also is concern that tensions with Iran over its nuclear program could lead to further supply problems.
The U.S. economy is growing even though high oil prices are taking spending money from consumers and make shipping and travel more expensive.
Economic data released Thursday showed applications for unemployment benefits hit a four-year low, spending on residential construction rose and major retailers reported stronger-than-expected sales for February.
Stock prices rose on Wall Street Thursday, helped by the encouraging economic news. That bolstered the feeling that the economy could start burning more oil.
"It's almost impossible for oil to stay down with equities rising," said Rich Ilczyszyn, an analyst at ITrader.
Economists worry that high oil prices will eventually take a toll on the economy, though.
"We've weathered it OK so far, but it could become a much stronger headwind than we anticipate," said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial.
Consumers have been helped by low heating and electricity bills this winter, which have eased the pain of high fill-up costs. The weather has been unusually mild across much of the country and natural gas, which is used to heat many homes and to generate electricity, has been cheap.
Natural gas futures fell nearly 6 percent Thursday to end at $2.46 per thousand cubic feet after the government reported that supplies of natural gas declined less than anticipated last week. The nation's supplies in storage are 45 percent above the five-year average and prices are close to a 10-year low.
In other energy trading, heating oil rose 7 cents to finish at $3.28 a gallon.
Controversial sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Ariz., declared President Barack Obama's birth certificate and Selective Service card fakes Thursday, according to the Washington Times. Arpaio says his investigators used law enforcement tools to test the authenticity of Obama's identity documents, working on their own time.
* The president's long-form birth certificate never existed in paper form, lead investigator Mike Zullo said, according to CBS News. He says Hawaii officials may have deliberately kept original 1961 birth records from being examined.
* According to ABC News, Arpaio said the date stamp and registrar's stamp on the birth certificate appear to have been imported from outside sources. NPR explained the basis for that charge, saying the stamps were on different layers of the document and could be moved about in editing software. NPR said its own test did not find the document to be multi-layered.
* A look a records for twins born at the same hospital as Obama one day earlier proved that there were microfiche records from the era, Arpaio told Phoenix New Times. Microfiche copies of the president's birth record have not been acknowledged to exist.
* The 1980 date on Obama's Selective Service registration card was created by cutting the date 2008 to read just 08 and flipping it to make the 80 portion of 1980, according to the Arpaio investigators. Zullo says the card "isn't just forged; it's poorly forged," according to NPR.
* Arpaio's team also claims Immigration and Naturalization Service international arrival records for the month August 1961 contain a gap- there are no records for the week of Obama's birth, they say.
Arpaio is subject to a federal grand jury investigation for abuse of power, unrelated to the birther issue, and several critics contend the beleaguered sheriff is seeking to draw attention away from his own legal problems with this investigation.

So starts the Bill of Rights. This sentence, also known as the "establishment clause," is often misrepresented by the left to ban Christmas trees or a picture of the Ten Commandments, which are the basis for our laws.
What the left refuses to use the so-called establishment clause for is exactly what it was written for. The establishment clause was not written to protect the government from religion but to protect religion from the government. Taking over the churches is, in effect, what brought Hitler the extent of his power over the German citizens.

Attorney General Eric Holder announced Tuesday the Justice Department will defend the unconstitutional mandate that Catholic Churches, through their hospitals, schools and charities, offer free "birth control," as reported by Fox News
This is in violation of their religious beliefs, thus impedes upon their free exercise of religion.
Holder's statement comes on the heels of yet another in a long line of apologies from Obama to Afghanistan that resulted in the murder of four of our military personnel.
The apology stemmed from the burning of damaged Qurans that led to rioting and murder by a bunch of savages, yet there is no apology to Catholics for violating religious freedom. President Barack Obama also hasn't spoken out on the death sentence handed down to Christian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani in Iran for the capital offense of converting from Islam to Christianity.
W.H. spokesman Jay Carney released a statement condemning Iran for its plans to execute Nadarkhani, but Obama remains silent.
The left-wing media is also jumping on the Catholic bashing bandwagon, as is evidenced by the Huffington Post where Catholicism is called "The Jesus-Eating Cult of Rick Santorum."

According to figures from the Obama administration’s own Bureau of Economic Analysis, for the nine economic quarters that Obama has been in office (including the first quarter of 2009, during which President Bush held office for 19 of the 90 days), real annual growth in GDP has been just 1.5 percent. That’s less than half the annual GDP growth during the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s.
Even more striking is that the rate of growth under Obama has been only slightly higher than during the 1930s — which, of course, was the decade of the Great Depression. In the 1930s, real annual GDP growth was 1.3 percent — just 0.2 percent less than under Obama.
Such strikingly low growth has been in spite of (or perhaps partly because of) Obama’s $787 billion economic “stimulus,” a major portion of his historic deficit spending binge.
Obama is already responsible for $4.4 trillion in actual or projected deficit spending, which amounts to deficit spending at a rate of 9.7 percent of GDP. To put that into perspective, the only deficits in more than 200 years of American history that have exceeded even 6.0 percent of GDP have all involved either the Civil War, World War I, World War II, or Obama.
Obama likes to talk about the economic hardships he inherited, and it’s true that real GDP growth was flat (0.0 percent) in the first half of 2008 before dipping 2.7 percent in the second half of that year (a fact that helped fuel his election). But that’s a far cry from the year before Franklin Roosevelt took office, in which real GDP growth was negative-13.1 percent — the worst tally on record.
Yet during FDR’s first two years in office, real annual growth in GDP was 4.8 percent. In FDR’s first three years, real annual growth in GDP was 6.2 percent
. The year FDR sought reelection, real GDP growth was 13.1 percent — the highest tally on record apart from during the World War II defense buildup in 1941, 1942, and 1943. (Even if just to spur the economy, perhaps Obama should have spent some of that $787 billion on national defense.)
To be sure, there’s far more to the presidency than merely promoting economic growth.
There’s securing liberty; there’s respecting the Constitution and the rule of law; there’s showing wise and steady leadership in international affairs. But simply based on the economy alone, it’s no wonder that FDR won reelection in a landslide — and it’s no wonder that most Americans think Obama does not deserve a second term.

Fourth, the "green economy," Obama vowed, would create millions of jobs. The Energy Department has handed out $35.2 billion in stimulus money to jumpstart the clean energy industry, but it's created more red ink than green jobs. Nationally, green technology accounts for just 2 percent of employment nationwide and there has been no marked boom in the industry.
Those loans, however, have created quite the scandal. Nearly half a billion in taxpayer dollars was lost to the now-bankrupt solar energy company Solyndra. The company, which has since laid off over 1,000 workers, was Obama's self-described poster-child for "American ingenuity and dynamism" in 2010. Today, it's the poster-child for the hazards of reckless spending.
Third, President Obama said in February 2009 that the stimulus would lift "2 million Americans from poverty." But since Obama took office, 6.3 million Americans have fallen into poverty.
2010 U.S. Census data, the most recent available, showed that 46.2 million Americans were living in poverty. Worse still, child poverty has increased, rising to 21.6 percent. Many middle class Americans, unable to find work or decent wages, have fallen below the poverty line in recent years. It's the most tragic cost of this prolonged economic nightmare.
Second, Obama promised the stimulus would not only have a large impact but also an immediate impact. Said the president-elect, "I'm confident ... our 21st century investments will create jobs immediately," adding, "We've got shovel-ready projects all across the country."

The prediction was not meant to be taken lightly. In a January 2009 radio address, Obama announced he was releasing a report based on "rigorous analysis" that charted unemployment through 2013 so "the American people can see exactly what this plan will mean for their families."

Today, 12.8 million Americans are unemployed, 8.2 million cannot find enough work, and 1.1 million have given up looking for work altogether. Unemployment still remains above 8 percent, the supposed maximum rate, and certainly above 6 percent. For 36 straight months, unemployment has been higher than what the president promised. That's more than a rounding error; that is a failure of leadership.
