    Renae :)

  • Thanks very, very much. Have been looking for a good tab/tutorial for this song for about a year and can truely say i've found one!

  • great tutorial

  • this is spot on, cheers man! :D

  • great tutorial, thanks. tell me, do you know what key the open tuning is in? seems quite unusual.

  • The open tuning only has three notes in it... E, F#, B which means the open strum makes the chords Esus2... It is almost the same as an E major chord (E, G#, B) only that the middle note G# is lowered two tones to F#

    :)

  • Thank you Swingfire for that tutorial, it's literally the best tutorial I've seen as a whole and it's one of the hardest songs to play having that weird tuning in mind.

It's fantastic how you spell every chord and summarize each part of the song. That's the way to do a tutorial.

    Cheerz!

  • patrick keep on tryin i mean me too i am a worst guitar player that you could imagine b4. but now \m/ i can rock not much but great... just keep tryin smoke some grass help you out

    joke

Ohhhh man thanks again i started hating to play a guitar when i try to play this song b4 it took me lot of days o weeks but i still cant get it. now i got it with your great tutorial. helps alot thank you so much

  • good tutorial 5/5

i downloaded a guitar pro tab but this video made it all perfectly clear

  • What is the tune?

  • great tab man, thanks a lot. i think what's most impressive is how the HELL did mayer come up with this? godd.

  • agreed.

  • @swingfire19 i know right who knows chords in open b tuning nevermind writing a whole song in it

  • Thanks for this!

  • This is making painfully clear, how bad a guitar player I am. :(

  • helpfull ;) thx

  • ty very much buddy. i was just looking for this

  • your thumb in ur butt? aw come on.

    hahah overall nice tut! 5/5

  • Great work. Do you know of a tab source for "wherever you go?"

  • thannk you!!

  • Great Job man, other TABS where kinda off, ur great man.!

  • Thanks dude...

  • the best tutorial i've seen for this song!!! thanks a lot!!!! it really helped me so much!!!!

  • ahhhh yes it all makes sense, you rock buddy

    i really appreciate the work

  • very good tutorial man it totally helped me :D

  • thanks so much! learned the whole song today from your videos, practicing still now while watching opening nfl game, u've got it down perfectly and u made it so easy to learn, the outro tabs are perfect but a bitch on the finger stretches, gotta work on getting clean notes, john must have extra long flexible fingers, gonna play this on my show this weekend (tiki bar music guy here)

  • Thanks for the info and demo man. Very helpful!!

  • what guitar are you playing?

  • larrivee om-03re

  • I ♥ U!!!

    Thanks a bunch man!!!!!!!!

  • Thank u sooooooo much

  • Dude, thank you!

  • i love you! lol

  • Great job and thank you. You made that easy.

  • Have you figured the outro yet? At the time I was learning it I could really figure out exactly what he was playing...even after watching the convert is 1080p

  • see the video info.

  • Cheers man, this is definitely a great tutorial for an awesome song. I also prefer not to use the thumb so much just due to the size of my hand and width of my guitar neck, but i see JM does so i'm gonna work on it. Thanks again, and i look forward to learning more from you :)

  • Awesome man. Best tutorial I could find for this song. Thanks

  • great tutorial, helps alot

  • Hey, bro, is there any problem if I don't use the thumb? I'm a classical guitar player and LUUUV J.M. songs and style, but this thumb is too much for me. heheh

Is it ok? Any opinions here? Tks to everyone

  • I'm sure that's fine, as long as you're playing the same chords it doesn't really matter

  • As for the whereever you go part.

Keep the same tuning and then go around these 4 chords:

    7 x 7 9 0 0

    4 x 7 9 0 0

    x 4 7 9 0 0

    x 5 7 9 0 0

You can experiment a bit with the last two open strings - muting or not. I dont have my guitar by the computer now, but Im pretty damn sure this is how its done :)

  • I'm pretty sure it's

    X 0 2 5 0 0

    4 X 2 5 0 0

    X 4 2 5 0 0

    x 5 2 5 0 0

the B and high E naturally get muted.

that's how John plays it on the live DVD.

  • close. I think it's

    x0254x

    4x254x

    x4254x

    05254x

  • Yeah, I watched the video, and then fiddled around on my guitar, and I came up with the same chord shapes as swingfire.

  • Is this guitar an Eagle?

  • No, it's a Larrivée

  • Great job. My hands are just too small. Trying to use bar chords in the 9th 7th and 2nd fret any suggestions?

  • Hmm, if I don't use my thumb I think the easiest way is to use my index finger on the low e, then my middle finger and ring finger for the d and g strings respectively (talking as if they weren't tuned up). is that how you were doing it? i don't think you really have to bar anything

  • ur awesome man, ive been meaning to start learnin this song, just the tunings really hectic haha

btw, is that guitar in the same family as john mayer's?

  • thanks a lot, man. the guitar isn't made by Martin like JM's, but it is the same body style, an OM

  • Actually, he's playing a dreadnaught for this song.

  • Actually, JM is playing a Martin Dreadnaught for this song on the live DVD.

  • This guy , my friends

    is king

  • Indeedles... give this guitarist a crown...

  • ya man really good job with this...can you get the wherever you go outro up??

  • Comment removed

  • Really fine work. A great explanation of a beautiful song.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you, good tab and explanation.

  • You are my idol, i have been looking for a decent tab/lesson of this for ages!! Thanks alot!

  • Sweeeeeeeet fancy Moses! Loved it!

How about the Live in LA ending??

I'm sure you're working on it for us.

    Keep on keepin' on!

  • I haven't tried to figure that out yet, but I'll work on it when I've got some more time (probably not for a few weeks unfortunately)

  • Hey pal, excellent job...I was gonna try and dissect this myself but you made life much easier...I have my own interpretations and tweaks, but they might add up to 0.75 seconds of the song...your version is spot on.

In regards to the "wherever you go" ending in live in LA...I think I can make life a little easier for ya. You likely would have figured it out pretty quick. It's 4 chords repeating.

The A string is tuned up a major second to a B, you don't notice it in the last song cause it's

  • always muted in the previous part. With that, the chords are as follows.

first (high e) string is always muted. then, from the 6th strumming down it's muted, open, 2nd fret, 5th fret, 4th fret and the high e as i said before is muted.

The 2nd chord uses that shape, except adds a middle finger to the 4th fret of the 6th (low e) string.

The next mutes the 6th string, and you move to the 5th string, 4th fret.

Last chord is muting the 5th fret, allowing the 6th to vibrate. high e is always muted

  • Nice, I'll def try that out next time I tune up for this song. Thanks

  • dude, whats that guitar?

    amaaaaaaaaazing sound

  • it's a Larrivee OM-03RE, I just got it a few months ago. i highly recommend it, it sounds so awesome in person

  • Fucking awesome.

  • Excellent tutorial! The song is actually really easy to play (depends on your level, though), once you practice a bit.

  • fantastic. thank you.

  • hey man, thanks so much for this. you're absolutely right that all of the tabs out there are wrong for this song. Would you please detail the quick progression done at 1:16-1:18 here?

  • hey, i don't know if you've seen them but I put up some tabs so that might help you

  • thatk you soooo much, great tutorial
