it's only a local mexicano trio. their guitarron player was at a wedding, the violin players were preparing for university finals and the trumpet players were deported.
i have spent much time in jalisco, including guadalajara and cocula, and have seen, photographed and recorded many configurations of musicians considered 'mariachis' by the locals. you gringos are so full of sh**t.
next question: What is Jazz? (can't wait for this response)
hahaha... even in mexico, yes jalisco, guadalajara and cocula there are ignorant people. If they weren't taught the difference, they wouldn't know the difference. If, while you were in Mexico they referred to the single musicians with these arrangements as mariachis, it is problably because either they didn't know the difference either, or they are merely speaking in your gringo pocho language so you can understand... to you "mexican musician" = mariachi
Think of it like this, a Rock band (Guns and Roses) unplugs for a second at a concert brings in a violin and plays some blue grass with their acoustic gutars. That doesn't make them a blue grass group. That is what the mariachi does for some songs with the accordian. ONE song here and there ONLY.
Many Rock bands have a drummer, 2 electric guitars, Keyboards a Bass and a lead singer. Around 5 Guys Right?
Ever heard of RUSH? 3 guys only! they are still a rock band.See my videos and my website
Now the TRADITIONAL 'TRIO" shouldn't be seen wearing a mariachi outfit, unless they market themselves as a sort of Mariachi TRIO, (for the americans)
This group is trying to cater to the american public that doesn't know the difference. It is a Trio, but not a "Trio" in terms of the genre of music. Americans think that 1 mexican with a guitar is a Mariachi. hahaha.THe Charro outfit does'nt make him a Mariachi. It is simply a guy wearing a Charro outfit and singing. A Soloist nothing more.
Trio" is another genre of latin music wich can also play mariachi songs if they are talented enough, but it usually consists of 2 guitars and a bass, or 3 guitars.
before the 1940's The Trios of guitar players did dress in charro outfits depending on the regions of mexico that they were from. Ever since TRIO LOS PANCHOS was formed around 1944 The TRIO genre was created and was known for singing primarily romantic boleros.
The Trumpet wasn't introduced until 1912 but was thrown out because at that time it was considered annoying. The Trumpet finally made a stronger stand in the 1940's.
By 1950 two trumpets were the standard horn section of the mariachi.
As long as you have at least 1 violin, vihuela, and Gutarron (3 members) it is a Mariachi. "Retro Mariachi if you will"
The Very first mariachi was a Harp, Guitarra de Golpe and a violin. the harp was replaced in the late 1800's by a Guitarron. and the Vihuela was a guitar varient that showed up around the same time replacing the Guitarra de Golpe.
So to you they can't be a mariachi band because they don't have the all the instruments. Have you ever tried to fit a whole mariachi band in a grocery store. It seems to me that might be very difficult to do. But that might just be me.
Not just to me. and there seems to be plenty of space around them for the rest of their mariachi, if there were any more of them...but guess what??? there aren't!!!!!
Making them a trio, not a mariachi.
No violins, trumpets, vihuela or guitarron = No mariachi. period.
uh..ok. I guess that mom comment is funny if you are 12 ..........but seriously, a mariachi is violins, vihuela, guitarron, and trumpets. usually there will be an acoustic guitar, and maybe an accordion, but without the previously mentioned instruments, it's not mariachi. sorry.
ahahaha!

The Accoridan is NOT a Mariachi instrument. It is sometimes added to a mariachi for certain songs to give it that "Norteno" effect.
Norteno is a different style of music, TOTALLY NOT Mariachi.
