pianojohn! I can play hey jude, imagine, real love! Thank you very much! But it's so hard for me to play songs that have one rythm in right hand and another in left hand. For example 1985 by Paul McCartney or this one. I need your help! p.s. sorry for my english
@tolebay13 Yes, that's one of the hard parts for most pianists, and it's something I have to work on myself all the time. Actually, what works best is simply practicing it until you get it. It comes to you faster than you might think. I wish there were a special secret that allows you to just play the two rhythms together, but there isn't one, other than practicing it. :-)
@1990schoolgirl The RH notes are D-Eb-C-Eb-G-Eb. The LH just plays a C, low note then high note. The first E-flat and last E-flat are both played together with the LH C. Every other note alternates LH and RH.
Your videos are so so great. Thank you so much for making them. You just cut my rock piano learning time by months. If you ever need a beatles guitar part figured out let me know and I'll send it to you!
@doucher9 glad you liked it, thanks. You're right, they never did do this one live, and as far as I know, Paul hasn't done it on stage either. It's one of his best compositions as a Beatle, IMO.
I thought this was supposed to be how to play Martha My Dear Part ONE so I expected the first part of the song. And by the way, I know the whole song by heart along with the rest of the song on the White Album.
@bealtlesrock No - it's part 1 of the tutorial. The verses are tonically interchangeable, meaning that the melody is identical on both. If you listen to it more carefully, you'll see what I mean.
The lyrics to the first verse are: Martha my dear, though I spend my days in conversation, please remember me. Martha my love, don't forget me. Martha my dear, take a good look around take a good look you're bound to see, that you and me are meant to be with each other silly girl.
@bealtlesrock I am not singing the first verse, I am singing the second verse, which goes as follows: Martha My Dear, you have always been my inspiration, please be good to me.
I swear I don't believe Paul has recorded it in real-time... I don't believe he played this much in '68... there must be a studio trick or it might be seomeone else doing this... (we know, for example, that Clapton was the one who recorded While My Guitar's solo instead of George, though there is no credit for him at all in the original LP!) But... anyway... WHO CARES??? It's so so so so beautiful that I repeated your performance about 5 times in a row now eheheh!!! Thanks a lot, you're awesome!
@boyfilhote actually, this is paul playing. Martha My Dear was based off of a piano exercise that was too advanced for paul, so he simplified it a little bit and made a song with it.
@sgtpepper19671 oh, really? Then I'll use this lesson and learn to play it, 'cause if I can play this "simplified exercise", I'll start thinking I play a lot, eheheh! Thanks for the information!
All right! I've been trying to play this by ear for a month now. Having no formal training and being unable to read sheet music makes it pretty hard. Thanks for this! I'm learning a lot.
@zoltronthebluesman Yes, unfortunately these older vids were recorded in mono... if you adjust your computer's audio balance tab so that it's receiving both channels, you'll hear the sound.
Thank you, I'm not good speaking in english, so i'm going to write in spanish: Qué buenos tus videos, muchas gracias!!, tengo 15 años y estos videos hacen impresionar a mucha gente, gracias!
Im a novice, more of a guitares in the past. Big Beatles fan, this is the tune if I ever get to this point that I know I can play, I put a lot of piano practice in a few years ago and stopped playing everything even guitar. But now Im back and think my mind will pick things up a lot better.Thank you for spending the time to teach.
Best tutorial! I'm using it to help me learn to play the song. :) I'm a beginner and this is the first song I'm learning, it's just my favourite so I thought "why not!?". Thanks so much! I've got the first part almost nailed down.
Dear John, your great lessons combined with my efforts have resulted in the cover of Martha My Dear I sent to you. Thanks for the inspiration and joy!
@myfriendsdeleteme The octaves can be played by just holding your hands in the same position throughout the entire run. It takes some practice, but you'll get it. On the G# LH, that's probably the trickiest part of the entire intro, actually. I learned this many years ago, but that one part required a lot of extra practice. That's really all it takes, but just be patient with yourself!

@cassioblucas Glad you liked it, thanks. A few of the older videos were not originally made for You Tube, although this one was.. I just had a much older camera and video editor back then, which made it look a little different from the ones I've got posted now. Greetings to you in Brazil!
I was watching this and talking to my mom on the phone and then it hit me! I said "Mom, I'm going to have a surprise for you when I come back home!" It's one of our favorite songs to rock out to in the car. I'm learning it right now to surprise her, and I couldn't have done it without you. Thanks so much! This really appeals to my visual/auditory (NOT sheet music-based) learning style.
this video is the first one ive seen of yours, and YOU'RE REALLY GREAT!!! when i saw the first few seconds i paused it and screamed out "OH MY GOD,, THIS DUDE'S AMAZING!!!!!" thanks so much for posting, it's a great help!!!
I've begun learning this song thanks to your excellent teaching!
I've gotten down the intro so far, but when you play the intro over again, as part of the first verse, you say you're "adding chords". I don't know much music theory, I mainly play by ear or read sheet music (though I'm really slow at reading), so I don't know how to build chords like that. Could you please tell me how those chords are played?
@Shilag Yeah, I just looked at that, and now I'm not sure which chords I added... I may have used the wrong word, as it didn't look like I put in a ny new chords, but I may have added a couple of notes to the chords.. it's hard to tell just looking at it. If I can figure out what I did, I'll let you know!
@pianojohn113 I think I figured them out, so that's okay. I personally don't like how they sound when I play it, so I'm going to use your instructions more as guidelines. (:
Though some constructive criticism: First of all, when you play the demo, you don't play the way you teach. Much of the verse is played very differently in the demo and when you finally teach.
@Shilag Yes, sometimes it's difficult slowing down a song that I play at normal speed and showing how to play the individual notes. Playing the song on the demo is one thing, but it's easy to forget which notes I normally play when I slow it down to teach it. It's like writing your signature.. you can do it quickly, but if you do it in slow motion, it doesn't look quite like the original.
@pianojohn113 Secondly, this is a minor issue, but when you bridge the verse and the intro the second time, you shouldn't play it the same way as the first. It's not just the Eb octave in the left hand and the Bb, Eb, G in the right. If you lsiten to the song you can hear that the chord changes. Sorry, I don't know the musical terms for things like this, I hope you understand what I mean.
Would you ever consider doing some ELO? I've wanted to learn the song Mr. Blue Sky, which really isn't too difficult, just a few easy chord progressions, but I'm having trouble finding the music anywhere, and I'm not too good at learning by ear.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and skills on the piano with so many people in the world. Thanks to you I've learned, as a beginner of 48 years old, within only a few months how to play some of the greatest songs ever made on the piano. I play nearly every day and it's so much fun. THANK YOU!
@ThePaulSchoenmakers That's wonderful, Paul, I'm really glad the videos have been useful to you. Keep up the good work on the piano, my friend, and thanks for the kind words.
I got a piano book of all the beatles' songs but it's not great. Your tutorials are way better. probably sound dumb but could someone please tell me the time signature? thanks
Unbelievable John, you nailed every note, Probably one the most difficult piano pieces ever written by the Beatles. I was told that George Martin had some input on this one like "In my Life". Thx so much for the tutorials, simply fab
Hey thanks so much. I was trying to learn this by reading the music from a Beatles music book I have. I was starting to give up because I read and play so slow it wasn't even recognizable. Now I'll try it with this and the book both in front of me and I'm sure it'll be a lot easier.
Dude that is too cool.. I listened to it on the cd and it sounded really hard to do ... I like the way you break it down kind of piece by piece.. Thank you.
@MJLwiistation360 The best thing to do, really, is to just keep working at it. It took me a little while to get used to doing the different chords too when I was first learning many years ago, but working a little slower and being patient helped. You'll get it sooner than you think!
You are amazing to play the piano, you should make a tutorial of a song by Pink Floyd that I have curiosity to learn, is called "Nobody Home", you play very well the beatles songs, Thanks for this Tutorial
if you don't play the piano and you learn this song would your left wrist be in a lot of pain when you finish practicing for a few mintues? or is that just me?
@Monkatron23 Yes, that's entirely possible if you don't play the piano on a regular basis. The wrist shouldn't be in a LOT of pain, but you might feel something there. If you have excessive amounts of pain, you might be moving your wrists too much. Just make sure your elbows don't move from side to side when you play. That might help a little.
just as beauty is as beauty does i shallrecall her as she was with girlish charms uponthe sea like a pod of dolphins in their glee Oh happy few Oh happy we like a gentle squall she came to be to splash the face of sleepy sky and danced with light refracted by within the depth of memory Oh happy few Oh happy we like mariners looking out to find this mermaid round about but not to tempt us onto shore nor rocks to cast our sails no more Her songs within the seaweeds lie a breathless beauty by&by
Wow, you're a piano genius. I just got a teensy bit mixed up at 4:59 where you said "You have to keep it on B" but played A flat. Screwed me up for a while, but still good job

@DaAliBerryz You're referring to the first verse.. I'm singing the second verse, which is "you have always been my inspiration."

Unbelievable John, you nailed every note, Probably one the most difficult piano pieces ever written by the Beatles. I was told that George Martin had some input on this one like "In my Life". Thx so much for the tutorials, simply fab

It's paul mcartney! :)
sjlarcadia 1 year ago
Hey thanks so much. I was trying to learn this by reading the music from a Beatles music book I have. I was starting to give up because I read and play so slow it wasn't even recognizable. Now I'll try it with this and the book both in front of me and I'm sure it'll be a lot easier.

Great song. I always thought it sounded really hard from the song itself but you've made it very manageable!
joc2kent 1 year ago
Dude that is too cool.. I listened to it on the cd and it sounded really hard to do ... I like the way you break it down kind of piece by piece.. Thank you.

im having trouble switching from chord to chord on piano, got any suggestions?
MJLwiistation360 1 year ago
@MJLwiistation360 The best thing to do, really, is to just keep working at it. It took me a little while to get used to doing the different chords too when I was first learning many years ago, but working a little slower and being patient helped. You'll get it sooner than you think!
pianojohn113 1 year ago
@pianojohn113 thanks ive learned the first part and took your advice now im playing it like it's no problem :)

@RaphaDomeniche Most of them. I don't trust the sheet music to be accurate, so I have to rely on listening to it to make sure it's right.

if you don't play the piano and you learn this song would your left wrist be in a lot of pain when you finish practicing for a few mintues? or is that just me?
Monkatron23 1 year ago
@Monkatron23 No, it's normal. It goes away after sometime.
genevievehaag 1 year ago
@Monkatron23 Yes, that's entirely possible if you don't play the piano on a regular basis. The wrist shouldn't be in a LOT of pain, but you might feel something there. If you have excessive amounts of pain, you might be moving your wrists too much. Just make sure your elbows don't move from side to side when you play. That might help a little.

um this is good but it goes a little fast. could you perhaps post all the notes somewhere or give a link?
GraceyBubs 1 year ago
@GraceyBubs I can't really post the notes on another section, but if you pause the video where I've got the notes on-screen, you can write them down.

Wow, you're a piano genius. I just got a teensy bit mixed up at 4:59 where you said "You have to keep it on B" but played A flat. Screwed me up for a while, but still good job
chimpbottle 1 year ago
@chimpbottle Yeah, you're right, I did say "B" there.. odd.. I hadn't noticed that before. It is an A-flat, of course. Glad it helped you, though!

PLEASE put a tutorial/version of rocky raccoon up. Even if its just that honky tonk part, that would be awesome!
