Rozsa's music is so wondertful! He used these themes in his Violin Concerto, written for Jascha Heifetz; I assume that was written first, because the film didn't come out until 1970.

Billy Wilder said that the Rozsa's concerto inspired him to write the script, which may be one reason the soundtrack fits the film so well.

Thanks for posting this. Quite possibly one of the most beautiful and haunting violin pieces of all time, especially the opening minute. Sherlock Holmes in perfect essence. No wonder Billy Wilder made a film just for this piece of music. Maybe soon, somebody will do so again . . .
