Great reference to my friend, Gary Campbell! Truly a humble person that can give credit to someone else for basing your practice routine on advice that they give, and not just giving himself credit for being a ridiculous musician!
I have political opinions, but this is about MICHAEL and his MUSIC. Besides, there is more truth in one note of Michael's music than ANY politician could muster in a lifetime.
It was back in the late sixties, Micheal was in a group called Sweet Stavin Chain.
He was a starving musican and my ex husband was the drummer. I remember seeing him play in a ripped brown cordoroy jacket. I said, "This guy is going to be a star. ANd just tonight June 4, 2010, I find out that he died. Isn't live strange? What a great musician. I am blessed to have known him.
Bret man, thanks for this. I'm barreling my way through his transcriptions right now and it's all so gorgeous. I had not seen the extended interview before so that was excellent. I especially loved what Mike said about group interaction. That is the truly life-altering aspect of jazz, not tri-tones or turn-around licks.
This is so great. I've seen it before, and revert back to it. Such a great man.
I like the commentary too. The things we have no control of in life are what makes jazz such an incredible Dharma. Because it is "a spiritual endeavor". Micheal carried and passed the torch. You video helps that passing. Peace, Bob
Mr. Primack - Thanks for the great contributions to jazz. The political comment, however, was a jarring and unnecessary, out-of-place distraction. Please respect the views of ALL jazz fans by focusing on the music and the musicians, and you'll be a legend in documenting jazz for the right reasons.
Agree with 'anti-political political commentary' comments here. REALLY tired of Bush hatred. Apparently winning the election wasn't enough to satiate your hatred. "The only thing we can do is - work on our attitude." (your words) Just put it to rest already.
@queekers Jazz has always been a revolutionary type of music. Besides, jazz players and jazz lovers are quite sensitive to government bullshit. Everyone who has seen the Thelonious movie would understand what I am talking about.
Many people believe that art and politics are separate subjects. To those, I would only refer the history of art in general to make my point.
Why don't you edit out the non-relevant political commentary in this video. We all loved Mike Brecker, but what the hell does Bush have to do with Brecker? Your musical contributions are nice. But the immature political shot only serves to diminish your credibility.
Bush leaves office in 2009 not 2008. I don't get why he threw that in there. The video is supposed to be a tribute to one of the greatest sax players all time.
I'm sure the interviewer is a nice guy who loves Jazz, but his strap is hangin'. He makes mention to Nat Hentoff, which quite frankly, is totally out of place. I read the wikipedia on Nat; He sounds like a crazy dumbass, who fucking cares? Anyway, Brecker is God.
Well done, Bret. Mike would, in his usual fashion, play down everything you said about him. He redefined the word "humility". Truly Mike was one of the greats of All-Time.
HA HA Baby Bush!!!

One thing that always astounds me in interviews with Michael is his overwhelming modesty.
Why did he have to go?
