Just to comment about weapons of choice. First an foremost is shot placement. I have killed many Alaskan Moose with a single shot from my 270, one moose with my 30-30, and my last one was with my Thompson center arms 7-30 Waters pistol. All single shots. However if you are shooting from 550 yards that is another story. Nice shooting. Glad you made them count.
@MrRallemulle There is alot of calibers out there and you cant kill one with a 22. Its to small. It would go 550 yards but the bullet would drop to much and slow down so much that you would probably just injure it and not kill it, so 22. is not the bullet you want to use. The best gun to use would probably be from 30.-45. cal. A 50. would freaking rip a big hole in the animal. It would be dead but you'd lose like a 3rd of the animal. A 45. wouldn't do the same as a 50 but its a little strong.
@MrRallemulle So a 30. is the best for killing elk, never use anything smaller but there is also different 30.s. You wouldn't see any thing telling you its a 30. you'll always see it as 300 WSM ( Winchester short mag) or 300 WM (Winchester regular mag) or 308, 330, 375, 325, etc. until you got to 40 calibers. my brother uses a 300 WSM. 300 WSM is always better than 300 WM. 308 is just as good if not better than a 300 WSM. It only the first 2 number on the gun that tell the caliber.
No arguing with a 300 Win Mag as your choice for an elk cartridge.
After forty-years of hunting I can say with a lot of experience, a 7mm Rem Mag with a quality 175-grain bullet will absolutely drop elk just as you saw in the video.
I own several 7mm Rem Mag's and several 300 Win Mag's also and they're equally deadly on elk.
You can't go wrong with either round so long as you place your shot and pick the right weight and bullet type.
@m0kfe would you say one performs better than the other, 7mm's high bc numbers are very impressive, iam considering either for my next rifle shot both from friends but only at 200 yards(limited shooting range at that time), i want it for trophy/dangerous game and seriously considering the 230gr bergers in 300wm, i can always load up a lighter load for normal situations other than 500lb boar. whats your opinion you own both, thanks.
Nice bull there, have you thought about using a scope with a mildot reticle? I had the same problems with my laser range finder dying on me while I'm out hunting. Last year, I measured and ranged my bullmoose at 526 yards using mildots. Took one well placed shot. Any scope I buy MUST have a mildot reticle. I never did like those range finders in the first place.
No, I haven't ever used the mil dot rectile. I have seen them before, but thats as close I have ever been. The range finder that we had would only range up to 300 yards, and so this was way beyond its ability. I do plan on getting a range finder that reaches out to 1000 yards so I wont face that problem again. The scope that I would really like to purchase is the Huskemaw 5-20 LR Rifle Scope. Its a scope that is used by "best of the west." longe range hunting. I am sure you have heard of them.
Of course there is meat in the Freezer! It was a 2 mile pack out to the 4wheeler, and then we were able to drive the last mile out to the road. I carried a 120lb pack, My brother had a 100 lb pack, my mom had a 70lb pack and my youngest brother carried the antlers and all of coats that we were to hot to wear. It was a lot of work, but it makes the meat taste that much better! We make hamburger, steaks, roasts and jerk every year.
about 4 years ago the best and worst pack out we did was a Samber deer in High plains Victoria Australia
shot at 10 am in the morning
got back to camp 820m higher and 5 kms away as the crow flys went down to get the last and back into camp at 8pm 2 hours after dark and what was left on the bones was taken by dogs while we where about 500 metres away but one hell of a pack out most of the time spent on all 4's climbing up the hill to the track
NICE SHOT!!! I'm stuck on either a 7mm rem mag or 30-06, do you have any advice. I bet all you had to do was put the cross hairs on his top shoulder huh, up on top. Sick! Thanks for any info,
It all depends on how much money you are willing to spend. And also if you are into long range shooting. If you have ever heard of the group "Best of the west", they are hunters that hunt at nothing but long range. I attended a seminar and it gave me a ton of good shooting tips. Thier most common gun is a 7mm mag rem. But as far as a fair priced all around gun, 30-6 is the best choice for that. I had to aim a foot high on that shot. I am buying better bullets this year so I wont have too.
Buy one of there hunting dvd's they are really good at what they do. They have the sweet scope that dials in the range for them, to make things so much easier! Good luck with your gun hunting!
