I downloaded this song as an Ave Maria by Caruso from the Schubert page on the German Wikipedia a few years ago but it has since been removed. Clearly it was a mistake. Thanks for pointing out that it is the Ave Maria by Percy Kahn sung by Richard Tauber.
@tomfroekjaer Exactly so, Tauber recorded it on at least two occasions, but this is certainly part of the Caruso. recording (made in 1913) of the Ave Maria, in a setting by Percy Kahn, and as you rightly say, Kahn is the pianist on the record. I regret that my earlier, unintentionally ambiguous comment might have led to some confusion. I did not mean to suggest that Tauber was the singer here.
Here is the Ave Maria setting composed by Percy Kahn. The composer plays the piano in this recording, and Mischa Elman is the violinist. In 1927 Percy Kahn recorded his work again with the soprano Florence Austral. When Kahn worked as accompanist and coach for Richard Tauber (who had previously recorded the song with another pianist in Germany), the tenor recorded it on 17th July, 1942.
So much I understand your playing Caruso's Ave Maria at that time in your journey. I have also walked Peru's solitudes. And goes perfect for the documentary, what amazing you took the victrola, so much up there in the mountains. Best for you, and your work!
Este Ave Maria no es de Schubert!!!....es de Perce Kahn!

This is not Richard Tauber singing, but Enrico Caruso. It is a recording from the 20th of March 1913.
Ave Maria by Percy Kahn is correct; violin played by Mischa Elman.

This really works for me on several levels, somehow. Well done. Interesting how even on old recordings, the quality of voice comes thru. thanks.

At least not the one from Elens Gesang everyone sings.

That was my first thought, too. Caruso, of course, is great, but I'd like to hear him do the Schubert of popular rendition.
