Thank God McDSP works with other workstations besides protools. Protools is the standard but we are all artists and no one is trying to be standard, but the new standard. Of course endless people will disagree, but we can all agree producing music is supposed to be fun, and that fun is found in the eyes of the beholder.
@209coconutty Im assuming its a McDsp plugin, but Im not sure. It has an M on it, but I havent seen that logo on the mcdsp website. Anyone else know? It looks pretty badass.
like somebodies gonna turn down his mixing job and the money he's getting paid for it because he thinks the song isn't "Real Music". Plus a song is a song, just like a TV show. Some people like it and some people dont. Get over it!
Everytime I watch one of these guys' name dropping, self congradulatory videos, all I can think is do they actually think that what they are producing is music? It's akin to having Ronald McDonald give a 43 minute dissertation on how to cook a good meal.
To all the people that say "I would never mix that type of music" A. You must not be getting paid much, and B. I'd be interested in seeing your mixing reel..
I've obviously hit a nerve with my comment. My post was not intended to disrespect your abilities as engineers. My degree is in engineering, and I now work in the field, but this isn't a pissing contest.
My point was to reference the fact that we all entered into engineering because of our love for music, and the minute we begin selling our abilities for garbage is the minute that we've created a conflict of interest. IMHO music like this should be abandoned and shunned. It's cultural poison.
Peeeerlease...firstly,the vocal was compressed to fuck before you started on it.Why are you talking about rock vocals with this sugar puff autotuned trash your using as a demo?.Then kids, take the Ssssss out, then put more top on them to make them stick out more, then use a de-esser.Use your own ears kids, dont listen to this buffoon. If he was anygood he'd be to busy to be on here.
All I heard was notes, transients and frequencies, buddy. Training to be an engineer will remove your tastes from the equation almost entirely.
Which is a good thing if you plan to earn a living in the industry, it's hard enough to find work without alienating entire genres based on your own tastes.
@MakeItJungle Yeah but you have to remember that by not working on a specific type of music you are painting yourself into a corner as an engineer. I'd be interested to see who is on your reel
To me that track sounded like it had an effect on it at the beginning. If it didn't, that mike sound like it had a little auto-tune feature. What type of mic were you using?
however, when you actually added an effect it was noticeable.
Ive been working on my music for like 2 years or so and I had all the production and everything else handles but i just couldnt get it sounding good enough overall....i came accross your show just by chance and no lie my mixing of my music is finally coming together like my improvement has been about 80% better for that I thank you.Ive taken your show as my guide and started doing my own research and studying all topics involved with music/sound.GodBless
Ok Dave I can see you do have no plugins on the actual Vocal Track, Im assuming you have to have the entire vocal sent to the aux track right above. I can see when you select you plugins you select the aux above and your send as well. Another question, why do you feel this is a better technique to send the entire vocal to what seems like a Vocal "Mix/FX/Vocal Chain" AUX. What are the benefits, sound? Workflow? CPU usage?
Hey Dave first I wanna thank you so much for sharing such vital information. My first question is how do you have you effects sent on this video. Based on the visual quality I can see that on the actual vocal track you have no plugins not even dynamic plugins. Correct my if Im wrong (based on visual quality) do you have most of your plugins on a aux and then send you lead vocal to that aux??? Excuse my ignorance or poor vision.
Awesome man. How do you go about treating the dubs or layerd vocals. Like as far as eq and compression. Is there a sertin way you do it? Or do you treat them all as leads and just set levels and pans? I got the panning down pretty well. Just not sure about the other parts.
Hey guys, last weeks one was in 720p and was far better to see regarding what you're showing us (plug-in-wise) and also better in audio quality. Any chance of offering that every week please?
@ThisWeekIn man i love your show.....can u tell me a plugin to create a chopper or stutter effect on vocals ....... ive tried everything but i not sound perfect .... help me plz :)
O-ways the best DAVE u the man and ZEN, HERB u guys r great. DAVE l would love to hear more of the frequency distribution and spaces in the mix and thanks for the pointers too.. I've learnt so much( WALK WITH ME........)
Great show! Regarding John Bonham. Check out this DVD by Jeff Ocheltree (Bonham's drum tech) called 'Trust your ears'. It explains in depth Bonham's micing. Thx Dave!
It would be good to devote a program to hard/heavy rock mixing techniques for a bit of a change from the rap, hip hop etc., genre's. I know it's huge, but rock still thrives.
This guy I am sure knows a lot but says very little - he could stand for congress!
