The situation was bleak and the Turkish officials met on September 21, 1821, at the Palace (Saray) to discuss the terms they should seek for surrender. However, two days later, as they were doing so, a Greek named Manolis Dounias with two companions, captured one of the towers, turned its cannon upon the Saray and started firing. In the mean time,

Dear civ5419 Thavma! Fantastic! Thank you very much for this information - it is greatly appreciated. I have just ordered Theodorakis' 1964 cd from Amazon! It also contains the equally fantastic song Tis dikasoias ilie noite" as well as an sung version of this song. Beautiful! Thank you again o filous mou!
I have just read all of the comments on this wonderful site. I have never read such anti-Greek tosh in all my life! Such negative comments arise out of sheer jealousy and envy of a great people. Greeks are Greek wherever they may be or wherever they come from. As an Englishman, they have my respect.
This music is driving me crazy!!!! I MUST know what it is called and who performs it! Iasked some weeks ago - anyone, anybody HELP!!! It is the most heroic tune I have ever heard - it epitomises all that is great about Greece and her people.
This music is called "Temples in the shape of heaven" (Ναοί στο σχήμα τ' ουρανού). It comes from Mikis Theodorakis album "Axion esti", based on Odysseas Elytis' poetry.

@illyrian16 ... very true illyrian16: "We used to speak Albanian and call ourselves Romans, but then Winckelmann, Goethe, Victor Hugo, Delacroix, they all told us, No, you are Hellenes, direct descendants of Plato and Socrates, and that did it. If a small, poor nation has such a burden put on its shoulders, it will never recover. - Niko Dimou, "Elgin Marble Argument in a New Light", New York Times, june 24, 2009
@illyrian16 ..."We Greeks, " he (Nikos Dimou) told me, "build false truths around ourselves in order to be able to project our wishful thinking on society". He continued, "The reality of the Church being the guardian of the Greek people during the Turkish Occupation is simply a myth. The Church was the extension of the Ottoman Empire. - "An unholy row in Greece", BBC, January 7, 2002
@balkandickhead Nikos Dimou is a known communist and a provocateur very little of what he says is based on actual facts. It is a known fact that the Orthodox Church was the Guardian of the Greek people during the Ottoman Empire. In fact, it was Bishop Germanos who first raised the flag of revolution in Greece. It was people like Papaflessas (A priest) who led an entire village in revolt of the ottoman Empire and Gave his life in Battle. I can keep going all night about the role of the Church
@AegeanKing ... we know you can "keep going on all night about the role of the church"... because you are a brainwashed greek peasant who has no awareness at all of the role of your military church in re-writing history. shame on you bankrupt fools for always believing Vatopedi and all the lies... you are mindless sheep... (i like real sheep, just not human ones). shame.
@illyrian16 ..."The object they [the Greeks] have in view is the hellenization of Albania. The whole of the southern portion carries its commerce through Janina, and the inhabitants regard this town as their capital. They fraternize easily with the Greeks... ... so that the Greeks hope with the possession of Janina to amalgamate the two races and gain over to the cause of hellenism the finest and most warlike race in South-Eastern Europe."
@Probyzantinum they fought for the freedom of Greece against the Albanians and Turks, how can you say that when they live in Greece for thousand years, speak Greek , they are Greek orthodox, and fought for the independence of Greece. it's like saying the George Kastrioti was Greek, that is not true, lets stop trying to change History.
@harryo27 they don`t live there for thousand of years just for few hundreds and yes they fought for Greece but they spoke albanian, wering albanian clothes and danced albanian dances. Were are the real greeks, not albanians or vlachs? You acuse FYROM or others that still from you but you are a very mixed population with a lot of traditions from others. And you are a clever person not like some of your citizens they have not idea about this things.
Ok they were, if you feel better :) But the thruth is that if they would live today greeks will look at them like "albanian imigrants". So is this why is so funny to me, on one hand you hate albanians, on the other hand your heroes have albanian blood. Do you see the irony of history? :)))
No, Greeks would not look at them like albanian immigrants. Arvanites NEVER considered themselves albanians. If you have ever met an Arvanite from Greece and call him an albanian he will probably kill you.
I was there and i have friends there, one of them with arvanites background, i know how the things are there and i tell you that many of "greek" heroes were arvanites or vlachs. Also greek national dress is arvanites, just admit the thruth. Look in your famely, what were they, arvanites, vlachs, karaman, anatolian? You see, greek people is very mixt....
karaman?? hahaha u have no idea what you are talking about. Greeks from anatolia ARE Greeks. you have never heard of Greeks from Pontos?? or Greeks from Smyrna? or Greeks from Kappadocia? that place that you call "karaman" used to be called Kappadocia before the turks came and was filled with Greek Christians. You obviously have no idea about the Ethnic Greeks from anatolia that have been living there for thousands of years.
@nickpafras i know all this and i agree with you when you say that there is no pure nation but then why you pretend you are so pure? Greeks from anatolia are very similar with turks and very diferent from blond greeks descendents from arvanites. I have a greek friend wich belong to anatolian group and he dosen`t like to be called "greek" but "rum", he say that this is the real name, "rum". So the things are not so easy as you say. Yes there is a big greek culture but the greek people is divers.
who do you think Greeks from anatolia are?? do you think they are turks?? Are you that ignorant of history?? Greeks from anatolia were there A LONG TIME BEFORE the Turks. you need an education my friend. ever heard of the population exchange between greece and turkey 1923?? 3 million Greek speaking christians came from anatolia.
@nickpafras i diden`t say they are turks, they are the old native people of anatolia that adopted greek language many years ago. When turks arived many of them adoptem islam and become turks, few of them remained greeks. Is this why they are darker skeen and look like turks not like european greeks.
Also, Being Greek has NEVER had anything to do with DNA or Blood. Even The ancient Greeks hellenized the phoenicians on cyprus and the minoans on Crete. They also hellenized the Tribes in Anatolia. Being Greek is about language, culture and consciousness. The famous ancient Greek philosopher Isocrates said this about being Greek "anyone is Greek who partakes of our language and culture". So this idea of DNA and mixing is all nonsense.
And other ancient greeks like Strabo sayed that macedonians are not greeks but barbarians :). The today greeks = ancient greeks + many divers nations who adopted greek language and culture.
firstly, I do not pretend to be pure. I am fully away of my ancestry. I have arvanites on both sides of my family. seconly, "rum" is the turkish word for Roman. all Greeks in anatolia went by the name Rum. Even Greeks in Greece went by the name "Rum" until the 18th century. the word "rumca" is the word turks use to descirbe the Greek language. lastly, Not all Greeks from pontos are dark, that is a stereotype.
During the byzantine empire his citizens called themselfs romaioi, wich means romans, some greeks kept that name even today. The fanatic nationalism during the Junta or other greeks dictatures fucked up many things. You forget that many arvanites, vlachs or slavs were forced to asimilate, if someone spoke arvanitika he was sent on island, today very few arvanites still speak the language. This things cannot be just ignored.
My Grandmother spoke arvanitika all the time. You have to understand you can not create a single nation if everybody in the country speaks 2 or 3 languages. Then you will have problems like you do in bosnia. Greeks dont teach Arvanitika in school because the country is Greece and the language is Greek. If you live in Greece you speak Greek. If you want to speak albanian or turkish move to albania or turkey. Greece can not have 20% of the nation speaking a different language.
Also, your equation (Todays Greeks =ancient Greeks etc,.) is flawed. The ancient Greeks were not a homogenous people either. As I said, Ancient Greeks hellenized many non greek people even before ancient Greece "golden age". So todays Greeks are everybody who has adopted the Greek language, culture and consciousness from the beginning until today.
@nickpafras you are a clever person but many greek nationalists are not like you. Maybe is becouse you are not "pure" greek and have arvanites roots (i m joking:)
also, Arvanites do not see themselves as a minority. They see themselves just as Greek as anybody else. thats what you have to understand. I hear so many albanians say "what about the arvanite minority in Greece?" Arvanites say "we are Greeks" therefor we treat them as Greeks. We dont give other Greeks special schools so we will not give arvanite Greeks special schools either.
1st. "ΕΣΤΙ MEN ΟΥΝ ΕΛΛΑΣ ΚΑΙ Η ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΙΑ" ΣΤΡΑΒΩΝ" - "Macedonia, of course, is a part of Greece". Strabo, VII, Frg. 9.
2nd. about genetics, if u r talking about greeks by blood, today greeks(greeks, not immigrants).
2nd. today there is no single "clear" nation, we been 400 years enslaved so did the majority of balkans. And in genetics it takes about 8-10 generations after a mixture for the dna and the blood line to be cleared.
In ancient times Hellene was not someone who was born in Hellas, but a group of different states-nations which spoke the same language, had same religion, culture etch(pretty much what consist a nation).
The first time that Hellas was used as nationality was in the persian wars but many greek states didnt took part(thebes allied with persians, macedonians didnt took part as well as some cretans and sicilians). Later Isocrates suggests Filip II to unite all states and make a nation.
and finally arvanites were a mixture of greeks and albanians, started when turks sent albanians in peloponisos to fight a minor greek revolution. Albanians pluntered and raped many women, some of them stayed making a society called arvanites who were christianised. Arvanites felt greek, spoke greek(with many albanian words in their vocabulary) and fought for the greek revolution.
I hear everybody talk about DNA. This is the same talk the Nazis use. Racial Purity is a MYTH. Even from the beginning of time there was no such thing as Racial Purity. There is not a single person on earth with only ONE haplogroup.
Read their biographies! And they're NOT Albanian clothes. More like the Albanians had nothing, and chose to copy the Greeks. Also, they ALL spoke Greek as well as other languages in the immediate areas, such as Albanian and Bulgarian and Turkish, and believe it or not, English, Russian, Latin....ya catch my drift? They were Greek and came from many different parts of Greece. Get over it, and know history the way it REALLY was. Not what you believe it was to make a class of people (albanians)..
....look better than what they really were. And the reason Albanians are hated so, is for many different reasons. For one, they're betrayal of the Greeks to the Turks. Second, they poured into the country looking for work and a better life, yet crime (theft, murder, rape, arson) has skyrocketed, and it's ALL attributed to none other than the Albanians. And if you want further proof, they ALL claimed to be Γραϊκοί (Greek). Check it out. I won't stand in your way.
@Mitsaras1973 i know the (hi)story, they were grecisade albanians called arvanites. But an arvanites is not a real greek, many greeks even today look at arvanites as albanians. And belive me, many of the heroes of "Greek" Revolution in 1821 were arvanites or vlachs. Your official propaganda it would be so funny if it diden`t produced a lot of murderes in the past. But maybe some nations need propaganda to stay unite, in special when they are so mixt like the greek one. Peace!
excuse me, Athanasios diakos did not speak albanian. Neither did kolokotronis. Neither did Ypsilantis, neither did Makriyannis, If you have ever read Kolokotronis memoirs you would know that he espouses his greek ancestry. by the way, being Greek has nothing to do with DNA, it has to do with how you identify yourself, and arvanites identify themselves as Greek, therefor, they are Greek.
there is not a single Hero in the Greek revolution that said "I am an albanian". They identified themselves as Greeks and therefor they are Greek. Your pathetic attempt to claim these heros for Albanian history is absurd and laughable.
i could agree with you mister......exactly this was the notion of political thoughts of hitler.....but please explain me 1]if is ready israel to nationalize the central bank of israel .. 2]the antisemitisme of stalin..and 3]the love-cooperation with the england -usa forces instead of communists partisans IN THE FINISHING 1944-1945 of 3- REICH remaining forces.......

I have just read all of the comments on this wonderful site. I have never read such anti-Greek tosh in all my life! Such negative comments arise out of sheer jealousy and envy of a great people. Greeks are Greek wherever they may be or wherever they come from. As an Englishman, they have my respect.

This music is called "Temples in the shape of heaven" (Ναοί στο σχήμα τ' ουρανού). It comes from Mikis Theodorakis album "Axion esti", based on Odysseas Elytis' poetry.

This music is called "Ναοί στο σχήμα τ΄ ουρανού". (i don't know how it is translated into english- perhaps "Temples in the shape of heaven"). It comes from Mikis Theodorakis' album "Άξιον εστί" ("Axion esti" or it "it is worthy"), based on Odysseas Elytis' poetry.

You don`t have any real greek heroes in this revolution? In this video i see only albanians.
Probyzantinum 2 years ago
@Probyzantinum they fought for the freedom of Greece against the Albanians and Turks, how can you say that when they live in Greece for thousand years, speak Greek , they are Greek orthodox, and fought for the independence of Greece. it's like saying the George Kastrioti was Greek, that is not true, lets stop trying to change History.
harryo27 2 years ago
@harryo27 they don`t live there for thousand of years just for few hundreds and yes they fought for Greece but they spoke albanian, wering albanian clothes and danced albanian dances. Were are the real greeks, not albanians or vlachs? You acuse FYROM or others that still from you but you are a very mixed population with a lot of traditions from others. And you are a clever person not like some of your citizens they have not idea about this things.
Probyzantinum 2 years ago
they are all greeks
panagiwths100 2 years ago
Ok they were, if you feel better :) But the thruth is that if they would live today greeks will look at them like "albanian imigrants". So is this why is so funny to me, on one hand you hate albanians, on the other hand your heroes have albanian blood. Do you see the irony of history? :)))
Probyzantinum 2 years ago
No, Greeks would not look at them like albanian immigrants. Arvanites NEVER considered themselves albanians. If you have ever met an Arvanite from Greece and call him an albanian he will probably kill you.
nickpafras 2 years ago
I was there and i have friends there, one of them with arvanites background, i know how the things are there and i tell you that many of "greek" heroes were arvanites or vlachs. Also greek national dress is arvanites, just admit the thruth. Look in your famely, what were they, arvanites, vlachs, karaman, anatolian? You see, greek people is very mixt....
Probyzantinum 2 years ago
karaman?? hahaha u have no idea what you are talking about. Greeks from anatolia ARE Greeks. you have never heard of Greeks from Pontos?? or Greeks from Smyrna? or Greeks from Kappadocia? that place that you call "karaman" used to be called Kappadocia before the turks came and was filled with Greek Christians. You obviously have no idea about the Ethnic Greeks from anatolia that have been living there for thousands of years.
nickpafras 2 years ago
@nickpafras i know all this and i agree with you when you say that there is no pure nation but then why you pretend you are so pure? Greeks from anatolia are very similar with turks and very diferent from blond greeks descendents from arvanites. I have a greek friend wich belong to anatolian group and he dosen`t like to be called "greek" but "rum", he say that this is the real name, "rum". So the things are not so easy as you say. Yes there is a big greek culture but the greek people is divers.
Probyzantinum 2 years ago
who do you think Greeks from anatolia are?? do you think they are turks?? Are you that ignorant of history?? Greeks from anatolia were there A LONG TIME BEFORE the Turks. you need an education my friend. ever heard of the population exchange between greece and turkey 1923?? 3 million Greek speaking christians came from anatolia.
nickpafras 2 years ago
@nickpafras i diden`t say they are turks, they are the old native people of anatolia that adopted greek language many years ago. When turks arived many of them adoptem islam and become turks, few of them remained greeks. Is this why they are darker skeen and look like turks not like european greeks.
Probyzantinum 2 years ago
Also, Being Greek has NEVER had anything to do with DNA or Blood. Even The ancient Greeks hellenized the phoenicians on cyprus and the minoans on Crete. They also hellenized the Tribes in Anatolia. Being Greek is about language, culture and consciousness. The famous ancient Greek philosopher Isocrates said this about being Greek "anyone is Greek who partakes of our language and culture". So this idea of DNA and mixing is all nonsense.
nickpafras 2 years ago
And other ancient greeks like Strabo sayed that macedonians are not greeks but barbarians :). The today greeks = ancient greeks + many divers nations who adopted greek language and culture.
Probyzantinum 2 years ago
firstly, I do not pretend to be pure. I am fully away of my ancestry. I have arvanites on both sides of my family. seconly, "rum" is the turkish word for Roman. all Greeks in anatolia went by the name Rum. Even Greeks in Greece went by the name "Rum" until the 18th century. the word "rumca" is the word turks use to descirbe the Greek language. lastly, Not all Greeks from pontos are dark, that is a stereotype.
nickpafras 2 years ago
During the byzantine empire his citizens called themselfs romaioi, wich means romans, some greeks kept that name even today. The fanatic nationalism during the Junta or other greeks dictatures fucked up many things. You forget that many arvanites, vlachs or slavs were forced to asimilate, if someone spoke arvanitika he was sent on island, today very few arvanites still speak the language. This things cannot be just ignored.
Probyzantinum 2 years ago
My Grandmother spoke arvanitika all the time. You have to understand you can not create a single nation if everybody in the country speaks 2 or 3 languages. Then you will have problems like you do in bosnia. Greeks dont teach Arvanitika in school because the country is Greece and the language is Greek. If you live in Greece you speak Greek. If you want to speak albanian or turkish move to albania or turkey. Greece can not have 20% of the nation speaking a different language.
nickpafras 2 years ago 4
Also, your equation (Todays Greeks =ancient Greeks etc,.) is flawed. The ancient Greeks were not a homogenous people either. As I said, Ancient Greeks hellenized many non greek people even before ancient Greece "golden age". So todays Greeks are everybody who has adopted the Greek language, culture and consciousness from the beginning until today.
nickpafras 2 years ago
@nickpafras you are a clever person but many greek nationalists are not like you. Maybe is becouse you are not "pure" greek and have arvanites roots (i m joking:)
Probyzantinum 2 years ago
also, Arvanites do not see themselves as a minority. They see themselves just as Greek as anybody else. thats what you have to understand. I hear so many albanians say "what about the arvanite minority in Greece?" Arvanites say "we are Greeks" therefor we treat them as Greeks. We dont give other Greeks special schools so we will not give arvanite Greeks special schools either.
nickpafras 2 years ago

And in genetics it takes about 8-10 generations after a mixture for the dna and the blood line to be cleared.
dimalex8 2 years ago 4
In ancient times Hellene was not someone who was born in Hellas, but a group of different states-nations which spoke the same language, had same religion, culture etch(pretty much what consist a nation).
The first time that Hellas was used as nationality was in the persian wars but many greek states didnt took part(thebes allied with persians, macedonians didnt took part as well as some cretans and sicilians). Later Isocrates suggests Filip II to unite all states and make a nation.
dimalex8 2 years ago
and finally arvanites were a mixture of greeks and albanians, started when turks sent albanians in peloponisos to fight a minor greek revolution. Albanians pluntered and raped many women, some of them stayed making a society called arvanites who were christianised. Arvanites felt greek, spoke greek(with many albanian words in their vocabulary) and fought for the greek revolution.
what more can someone do to be considered greek?
dimalex8 2 years ago
I hear everybody talk about DNA. This is the same talk the Nazis use. Racial Purity is a MYTH. Even from the beginning of time there was no such thing as Racial Purity. There is not a single person on earth with only ONE haplogroup.
nickpafras 2 years ago
Read their biographies! And they're NOT Albanian clothes. More like the Albanians had nothing, and chose to copy the Greeks. Also, they ALL spoke Greek as well as other languages in the immediate areas, such as Albanian and Bulgarian and Turkish, and believe it or not, English, Russian, Latin....ya catch my drift? They were Greek and came from many different parts of Greece. Get over it, and know history the way it REALLY was. Not what you believe it was to make a class of people (albanians)..
Mitsaras1973 2 years ago
....look better than what they really were.
Mitsaras1973 2 years ago
@Mitsaras1973 i know the (hi)story, they were grecisade albanians called arvanites. But an arvanites is not a real greek, many greeks even today look at arvanites as albanians. And belive me, many of the heroes of "Greek" Revolution in 1821 were arvanites or vlachs. Your official propaganda it would be so funny if it diden`t produced a lot of murderes in the past. But maybe some nations need propaganda to stay unite, in special when they are so mixt like the greek one. Peace!
Probyzantinum 2 years ago
excuse me, Athanasios diakos did not speak albanian. Neither did kolokotronis. Neither did Ypsilantis, neither did Makriyannis, If you have ever read Kolokotronis memoirs you would know that he espouses his greek ancestry. by the way, being Greek has nothing to do with DNA, it has to do with how you identify yourself, and arvanites identify themselves as Greek, therefor, they are Greek.
nickpafras 2 years ago
there is not a single Hero in the Greek revolution that said "I am an albanian". They identified themselves as Greeks and therefor they are Greek. Your pathetic attempt to claim these heros for Albanian history is absurd and laughable.
