Certainly one of their albums that I don't give enough attention, that needs to be changed! Oh and nothing beats listening to Neurosis when your mind is clear and sound.
Now that we're enlightened about the singer of this version of the lament in the beginning, I wonder if anybody knows about the origins of this lament. As someone already noted, a (different) version has been used for the soundtrack of "Crawlspace"(1986). In the credits it's called "Hebrew Lament" (performed by Alessandra Moscati). In the tracklist of the soundtrack composed by Pino Donaggio it's called "Martha's Lament".
Are these classical hebrew lyrics? I didn't find anything so far...

The song from the beginning is also featured throughout a horror movie from the mid-80's called Crawlspace. It has Klaus Kinski (always crazy and awesome) in it as a crazy landlord/Nazi doctor that kills college kids. Pretty heady stuff. The song is credited as "Hebrew Lament"
How cool to hear this finally -- the vox are by Erica Little...she was my roommate several years ago in San Francisco (and told me that she had sung the vocals on a Neurosis track). I was thinking of her today and decided to see if I could google the track, and here it is. Plus I can clear up any confusion...it is not a sample, it is definitely her singing as a guest vocalist on the studio album. Thanks for posting this!!!
@floatinggardener dude wha language is it in can I get a translation of it pls? lol soz if I'm being pushy but I been wondering what I been listening to for ages :)
Mmm... I believe DrSrdvid is right. It's not a sample. I think they recorded it with a guest vocalist, some Erika Little, her name's in the album credits. And, since there's no other song on the whole record with female vocals, then it must be this one. But I might be wrong....
Maybe so. What I really mean is that, only because they don't have a guest vocalist when they perform the song live, it doesn't mean that they couldn't have one in the studio when they recorded it. Also, since you seem sure of the fact that it's not a vocalist but a sample, could you indicate me where else in the record I can hear this phantomatic Erika Little singing? It is probable that they just like sharing album credits with friends and relatives but, again, I might be wrong...
A valid point, & well said. Yes, at some point, someone had to record the vocals. However the 5 times I've seen them live, & the 2 times I've had beers with these guys, there has never been any female vocalist tagging along. They play this song each time I see them. Do the album credits specifically state that Erica Little provided the vocals for this song, or are they not specific about that?
No, the album credits just state that she provided additonal vocal parts, but doesn't say where. Anyway, I listened to the album today again and, in the song Lexicon, I think I can hear some sort of vocals, sounds more like kind of moaning, and it could be this Erika Little. If it is, it doesn't necessarily have to be her in the intro of Raze The Stray... the mistery is getting thicker by the minute.
I'll turn the internet inside-out and I'll get back to you if I find anything out!
YES!!! This is the one I was looking for!! My Dad showed it to me on a tape but I didn't know the title! YES!

ja but i'd still want to know where it's from cos i'd be into more stuff like it.

I believe it's pure Neurosis, with a guest vocalist.
Pleurotus 2 years ago
I think the intro is original with a guest vocalist. I could be wrong though

It's a sample. I've seen them live several times. The keyboard player does a lot of crazy shit like that.
