Thanks to all of you for your great comments! I'm glad to see that this empathy concept seems to be striking a nerve. I'm excited to see it take root and spread in a much bigger way. Please feel free to visit my blog if you want to dig deeper into some of the science I didn't have time to cover in my speech.
I agree with Mr. Roberts. He refers to "empathy" as a fix for humanity's travails. He is really speaking of Pan Determinism - "stepping" into another's universe - taking on another's perception of existence. I have been an "empath" since childhood. What I've learned is that empathy does not work on those who R drivers of the Global Plutocracy.Empathy in action is something billionaires would not embrace. They sold us "TheAmericanDream" which is a Ponzi Scheme. They win.We Lose.Soon:a global Haiti.
John Roberts, is inarguably, extremely insightful, sincere, intelligent, charismatic and spot-on with his notions regarding empathy as the only solution to reverse the dwindling spiral of subhuman behavior that pervades our way of perception and behavior. However, Mr. Roberts is not revealing anything new. I have been an "empath" since my earliest memories as a child. Continued on next post. . .
I empathize with your mission, John. As a practicing consumer anthropologist, my biggest mission is to drive empathy at my client organizations...within their organization as well as with their consumers. It's an interesting and rewarding journey to be on. Looking forward to catching up next time you are in Atlanta!
8:19-8:52 "... the seeming apathy, the indifference of others that they meet, it's not real. It's a mirage, a facade, a flimsy shell of undigested pain begging to be broken open so that the better angels of human nature beneath it can finally be released. Empathy is the antidote to cynicism, and the source of practical human insight that each of us is going to need in the coming decades if we hope to achieve our personal goals and also make the world a more enjoyable place." - I must remember
Outstanding presentation! John has the ability to take big complex and scary topics and make them personal and understandable. And through his lifelong study of human nature, he offers us empowering solutions and inspiration in the face of great adversity. To be more like John is our best hope for future generations.
Very good presentation, John, and certainly a revolution should ensue. The world is getting smaller and smaller with the inception of the internet and globalization starting to affect us on a personal scale. This could be a roadmap towards a better world, if people listen.
Greetings from Atlanta: City of Peace. Mr. Roberts, great job on your speech! Please help us transform Dr. King's birthplace into a global capital of peace:
Wow John, thank you for expressing the power of Empathy in such a clear and passionate way. This is one topic that should be compulsory in all schools, educators take note.
Although I feel you could extrapolate this to Empathy for Earth, something we have lost in our evolutionary rush to wealth. For without it we will destroy all the earths living creatures we share it with, then man will truly be alone.
An amazing speech on the power of empathy! I helped create the online experience at his Igniting Inspiration website - It's a truly powerful, interactive course, you have to check it out!
Amazing - particularly that it is over 1 year old - I would have included in my latest blog post if I knew about it
