Thank you for playing. The tempo was a bit uneven, but the flow was wonderful...very natural. I play it in a different key (my voice is a bit lower), but your vocals did it a nice justice. Always one of my favs...always glad to hear it performed and not forgotten. Bless you, and keep spanking those ivories. Music is Medicine!
hey david :-) i love your piano-playing. you are the best ej-cover singer i found in the network. now i have started playing the piano, too. i wished you would play some new rare elton titles - for example "madness" from the single man album.
damn, dude. killer cover. LOVE your piano playing, and great vocals. I've just started playing keyboard, and this is one of my fave EJ tunes (kind of inspired me to start playing.) Looking forward to more greatness from you. thanks for posting...please post more.
Thanks for the kind comment. One of my favs too. I hope you'll subscribe to my channel. Also, you may enjoy a video treatment I did of this song (to EJ's recording) here on my channel.
Great question, jnoble12. I think Bernie Taupin, especially in his earliest lyrics with Elton John used rather psychedelic imagery that conveyed an evocative, somewhat vague meaning rather than a literal one...the opening line does refer to a 'blue canoe' which seems to evoke a Union Civil War canoe, but there are so many ways to read it, and I think BT left his lyrics open to interpretation, similar to many of the lyrics of the late 60's pop muisc era in general.
Bernie writes the best lyrics...my personal favorite "obscure" EJ song ever is 'Burning Buildings' from the 1984 Breaking Hearts album. The lyrics, the music, the spanish guitar solo in the middle, the analogy of a 'burning building' to convey a failing relationship. I love everything about that song
I have had played it out on occasion. The response is usually ok-not overwhelmingly positive or negative on this one. I play it mainly because I enjoy doing so. Thanks for subscribing.
Excellent. It always takes a lot of coutage to cover an Elton John song. I've been toying with this one starting on A - I didn't think it would be bright enough in the chorus starting on G, but it sounds pretty damn good the way you're doing it. I always thought this tune would make a great cover in a full band, only loud and dirty with two guitars but with really good vocals.
Thanks for your reply. I've sung it in A as well, but like the wasy it feels in G for this version. I'd like to invite to subscribe to my channel for future posts and to keep in touch!
Actually, now I'm thinking a Hammon B-3 sound with Leslie's. Geez, I'm always trying to hear music with different sounds. A curse I guess. David, just as aside, from where do you obtain your Elton John sheet music? Keep playing,
I enjoyed your version of this my favorite John/Taupin song. You have a good voice for this type of music and your keyboard skills are evident. Have you heard Ann Wilson's recording of this song? Interesting lyrics don't you think? I wonder how this might sound on a synth as other instruments. Say on a harpsichord. As others have said you need to mic your voice and mix it into the recording. Have you tried "Grey Seal" yet?
Hey Andy. Thanks for your comments on this. This is one of my favorite Bernie Taupin lyrics, and Elton's treatment of melody and accompaniment is really great. Somewhat psycehdelic. EJ sheet music? Borders, Guitar Center, and probably old used books online. Do subscribe to my channel for future posts...
I liked the way you funked-it --up with the final two choruses. Had a little "Can I Put You On" tempo/beat to it. I also defiantly heard a twinge of Elton in your voice when you sang the words (or pronounced while singing) , enchanted and ending!! I mostly heard your piano -- which seemed dead-on, note for note -- but would have liked to hear the voice on a separate channel. (I believe that's music talk)
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I've been thinking of miking my voice to make the voice a bit more present. Actually, I don't know if you viewed my channel, but I have a version of 'Can I Put On' posted as well. Working my way thorugh the early classic stuff....I'd like to invite you to subscribe to my channel to offer feedback on future posts!

The original was pretty upbeat, but this seems to give it even more life, especially with the prechorus synchopation. Awesome!

I never understood some of the words in this..were the opening lines referring to a dead soldier floating face down in a river or something?
