um... i reeeaally dont wanna sound stupid or something but if these towns are so small and so incapable of sustaining themselves, wouldnt it be better for the people and cheaper for us in the long run to just transport them somewhere where they can become self reliant???
@StevoE26 No, I'm afraid that that wouldn't work. Not a stupid question though. You see, nearly all of Haiti is like this village. There just isn't enough good land for everyone there. Moving them to a city would be even worse, because if you look at shanty towns like in Kolkata, India, more people closer together means more disease, more crime, less food, less water and dirtier water, ridiculously high levels of unemployment, because there just aren't enough jobs for people (continued)
in the cities, not even close. At least in these remote areas they can grow a little food for themselves, but that isn't something they can do easily or at all in a city, which means that actual farmers have to supply more food to more people, which puts more of a strain on resources, which can have untold ramifications down the line
Or f you mean relocate to say, America, besides them not wanting to leave, it would be cheaper and more sustainable to help them in their own country.
@yumagetbullet Do you even KNOW about Gates and Buffett? Gates has a foundation, the "Bill and Melinda Gates foundation". He has donated billions of dollars to it. Buffett has pledged THIRTY billion dollars over a period of time...
The foundation does tons and tons of amazing things all around the world, including lots of vaccination projects.
If it makes you angry that people continue to live in terrible conditions then DO something about it instead of criticizing others.
@yumagetbullet And no, they couldn't fix entire countries. (At least, not any of a reasonable size.) Don't assume that because they are rich they are assholes because that's evidently not the case.
@MeOnStuff remind me please when i said they are assholes?
You assume that i'm some ignorant kid, but in fact you are the one who assume stuff about other people.
people like these have 50 billion each. Country like Zambia has GDP of 13 billion ( 1k per capita.) I am sure world richest people could fix countries like these. Not to the level of US. but reasonable where people could go to hospital and have water and would starve to death.
@yumagetbullet If you read my first comment then I would hope that you did some research on the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. You will realize that Gates and Buffett have both donated tens of billions of dollars to charitable causes.
You said that this video makes you angry and that Gates and Buffett could fix countries. The only reason this would make you angry would be if you felt that Gates and Buffet (and by extension, all rich people) were not doing their fair share to help.
@yumagetbullet And if they are not doing their fair share to help, then one would say that they are assholes because they are in a position to help.
But in reality they have proved that they are not assholes because they have done far more then their fair share to try and solve the problems that exist in the world. You say they have $50bn each, but this is not necessarily true because of the vast amounts of wealth they have given and pledged to give to charity.
@yumagetbullet In fact, Buffett has pledged to give away 99% of his wealth (as have many of America's wealthiest individuals.) Sure, the 1% he has left may be $500m, but you can hardly deny that he has not done his fair share of helping the world.
I suppose it depends on what you as an individual think is fair, or what you think should be done to the money on very wealthy people. I think that it is entirely up to the individual to choose what they want to do with their money.
@yumagetbullet If they want to give it to charity then great! If they want to pass it on to their children, or invest it in businesses, then they are equally entitled to do that since it is their money. I don't think that anyone should tell someone else that they "should" give their money to charity - it should be entirely down to the person whose money it is.
@yumagetbullet Naturally I think that we should be doing all we reasonably can to help nations such as Zambia who cannot on their own provide a reasonable standard of living for its citizens, but I think that primarily it should be governments and international organizations who can pool resources who take action, rather than relying on the wealthiest individuals - though of course those individuals could help fund the governments if they so wish.
Thank you for pointing out the important difference between types of charity. I hate it when I hear about food drops and medicine distribution (as important and well meaning as those are) to areas that can't sustain a basic standard of living when all they need is some simple infrastructure. Thank you for doing what you do.
Hank, thank you for actually going to Haiti and for making these videos. When a charity asks me for money, I feel uncomfortable. Thanks for making it okay for me to give money to a group that will use it well.
So, I am an American, and I live in a town where the city water has just a teeny bit more iron in it than, say, a bottle of Evian. Residents joke about it all the time and I know a few who claim that they can't drink it, it makes them sick. I've had people try to convince me to buy $3000 water filters to save me from the beautiful, clean, cholera-free water that magically comes into my tiny apartment from five different sources, hot and cold.
Can I jus say that boh Hank and John do amazing jobs at presenting issues in a way that is frank and honest and good and if all PSA's were constructed as though we were talking to our family, instead of guilt tripping everyone, they would probably be more effective.
Originally I understood the need to have an infrastructure for the well. (Assuming that this place never had a well before.) So now I'm watching video of the old well and wondering if there were issues in the past on who used the old well? If not then why waste time putting in an infrastructure. They didn't have one before. Show how to build a well and repair it if it every breaks again. I'm now thinking the water.org process is a little screwed up and controlling. People are dieing.
@LittleMikeStarCraft People who do those things are in serious pain and in real need of help. There's being aware and there's being negative and judgmental. It's a gray line. . .

I don't understand why you'd walk that long to the water. Why don't they just.... move closer to the water? It literally makes no sense to live so far from the water - which is the most important thing, surely?
and this video just confirmed my desire to be a civil engineer to help get rid of this cause of worldsuck that is relatively easily fixed. Thanks :)
it's times like these when I question why we debate about funding for planned parenthood and not about funding to help people who are forced to drink disease-ridden and esentially deadly water.
Like, BlackBloodGhost I've also never been happier to be poorer. I sure hope those folks get a decent well soon. Drinking from a mud-pit is unacceptable. I know there are untold millions in this position, but you and I are only individuals and can only do what we can, and I'm very glad to have met you on this series of tubes and had you show me that I can help here.
My friend who doesn't have a youtube account would like to say she love's this video, and she also wanted to let you know that she is also trying to raise money for causes similar to this in our Koinonia club (Christian club) at school. NERDFIGHTERS FOREVER <3
Do they boil the water? Because that would kill the cholera. Also, one thing that could make the water safer to drink is water filters like the ones backpackers use. Once you get one, you just have to replace the actual filter part sometimes, which isn't that expensive. It's not a perfect solution, because the people would still have to walk a long was to get water, but it's something. Also, it is kind of time consuming.
oooh - houses on stilts - that's fascinating. i nly knew them as the russian sami, or `house on fowl's legs` (pictures at exhibition - mussorgsky/rimsky-korsikov)
When I started this video I had to pause it because I had to pee (which I have been doing often due to the amount of water I drank today). and that may sound like too much information but it made me think of how fortunate I am to get to pee in a toilet that leads to a sewer system instead of leading to my water source. and how thankful I am to have clean water running through my tap. Everyone should have that privilege.
This video means a lot to me, I spent a month of my summer in Madagascar seeing the same type of situation. Its good to know many people are trying to make a difference.
Hi! My schools FIRST robotics team 329 made a bunch of water filters and instructions of how to construct more down to another team we made contact to in Haiti, that can hopefully provide clean water to their entire village. Were trying to decrease world suck here too (:

Hank: A while back I commented on the Telescope video you made saying how it was more important to decrease world suck than to increase awesomeness ,and how African children were dying from Cholera, and that we needed to change it.
And now, you are helping give the clean water Haitians need to them, helping them help themselves, and inspiring others to do the same. I just wanted to thank you for what you are doing and let you know that you truly are a shining example of what I hope to become.
charity:water already does this, but thank you for supporting this cause! I am a huuuuge supporter of charity:water, with the funding for one well almost complete.
Hank's statement about needing to get to a doctor within a couple of days if you have cholera is actually a bit of an understatement. Cholera can kill within a few hours, but most people can be treated with just a simple electrolyte solution - sugars and salts dissolved in clean water. Sachets of electrolytes cost just a few pence/cents, and they can save so many lives - it's shocking that so many people are dying of cholera when an effective treatment is so cheap.
This reminds me of India and their water situation- you can smell the water before you see it and it's almost always filled with trash. Also I miss sugar cane. I've travelled along and almost every country I've been to you can buy sugar cane off the street. Anyway I liked this video though it made me miss travelling.
I love your video, but in the spirit of zipping the intellectual fly, I have a grammar comment to make.
The person who helped you overcome the language barrier was your interpreter, not your translator. An interpreter works with spoken or signed language, while a translator works with written language.
Besides donating money and not wasting water, is there anything we can do for water dot org? I'm unemployed and literally don't have money to give right now, but I still want to help.
I don't really feel bad for Haiti. A while ago we were there helping them until they decided they wanted us out and they killed us. Now that they are in trouble they expect us to aid them hmmm I wonder. Are we just that dumb that we keep pouring money into countries that don't even appreciate it. Hell America is in so much debt as it is we can't afford to help other countries.
@MrChickenwingzz no one likes america, so they might as well try to help their social status a bit, i mean cmon people here are suffering from what? eating to much while over their their barely getting what they should, and you dont want to help em? ok dont think of it as haiti think of it as people who are suffering, i mean its stupid to let all those people die just because their from this place or that place...
@unit9888 although i agree that helping people universally is really good, i must point out that there are people starving in america too. so if you would please stop stereotyping americans (even though i am not one) because they are not all obese food-stuffers, there are plenty of starving people over here as well, and people that do have enough to eat, but don't stuff their faces. also, you used the word 'their' twice in a row, when you should have said 'there they're'.
@chimerazz seems selfish though, overall Americans are much MUCH better off than Haitians, such as the ones in this video who have familiars dying of cholera. As far as I know homeless Americans don't die of cholera and unsafe water, they at least have water. And the way you turn your nose up to the Haitians is a lot like how unit9888 turns his nose up to Americans, generalizing a population over one factor. Not all Haitians are the same, and not all Americans.
@helliop it's interesting how i never said a single thing about haiti and you just said i turned my nose up at them and generalized them. i did not, in fact, even imply that americans or haitians were all the same. i was merely pointing out that every country has lots of people who are suffering.
@chimerazz erh im american first off lolz, and even if we are starving its much much worse everywhere else, then theirs people that publicly say well lets help ourselves then others, and then more people who publicly agree, then you understand why everyone hates us D: and trust me, even if their not obese americans eat alot, ive seen people eat in a day what would last my family a week, yet their perfectly healthy, erh... others dot he same and arent so healthy xD
@unit9888 okay, for goodness sakes, not all americans eat a lot. that's stupid generalizing. and it's not much worse EVERYWHERE else. we're not like the freaking pot of gold on the planet. australia, countries in europe, and other developed countries all have plenty to eat.
@chimerazz oh for the lvoe of, i know we dont eat that much, but when so many people make more then enough theyd rather live on more, i mean i can argue as to why id rather buy a tv then donate, but im not going to protect people who waste their money on 3 cars just because its more convienient, and its not just eating its money in itself, and at least other countries knwo when to save up money and not just spend it all on whatever, and i know not all americans do it but most do and thats a fact
@chimerazz its odd how the american is trashing america and u who isnt american is defending it but whatever, i know already that they donate alot, but they could donate more all im saying, the only reason most people donate is to put up masks, i means ure their are many legit donations out their but i cant really see america as a whole helping a country that isnt itself, and before you call me stupid how about you live in a america and see for your self...
@unit9888 i would defend any country that someone was bashing, no matter what nationality that person was:P it's not nice to just generalize like that! and also untrue. and america DOES help countries in ways that doesn't help itself, there are lots of people in america that care about other places and do their best to help out. and for your information, i DO live in america.
@chimerazz but you said you werent american before, and you also said u were canadian o.o that and im not generalizing it, the only person ive seen who would actually donate wasnt even an american, thats just sad... i mean forget the stuff about putting down minorities when only the minorities are helping others, those who are way better are dont bother... and its not generalzation its the truth...
@unit9888 yes, canadians can, in fact, live in america:P and just because you haven't met an american that likes to dontate in your tiny little life, doesn't mean that there aren't lots of them:P
@chimerazz ik canadians can live in america one of my best friends is canadian and he comes here once every so often, but its nto just i havent met any, i havent seen any that could care, i see people on the news saying donate this, then a bunch of regular joes donate yea, but thats about it, they raise something around 200k which is a lot of money dont get me wrong, but the possibilities are so much higher if people actualyl cared theyd only have to help a country out once...
Americans don't care about starving people in there country because they are mostly minorities and the media has brainwashed most citizens that they are the cause of everything wrong in the US.
What do you mean no? Its the truth, sorry if it hurts your feelings to the point you can't accept it (but it isn't surprising to see an American deny white privilege). Plus telling from your comments on this video you seem to have a habit of crying about the truth, so continue if it makes you feel better :)
@FuckingEnforcer Alright, well, i am actually CANADIAN, thank you very much. and the media doesn't brainwash people to hate minorities or whatever other conspiracy theories you come up with. most of my friends are minorities, and we're all happy little geeks that will grow up to be nice lawyers and doctors and whatnot. in fact, from what i've seen from the media, they are promoting diversity. so... no. it's not the truth, and you obviously are very ignorant.
Conspiracy theories? Really? Do you not watch the news (in America and not Canada you moron) or are you too blind/stupid to how minorities and the poor are portrayed. Plus why did you feel the need to point out you are friends with minorities? Do you think your retarded anecdote is enough to dismiss the truth? You obviously very ignorant, get out of your made-up black and white world; silly child.
@FuckingEnforcer I do watch the news in america. and i LIVE in america. and they are not portrayed that way. my point was not that my 'anecdote' as you say dismisses the truth, i'm just saying that i have never seen minorities treated less than white people in america! and you apparently live in a much more black and white world, thinking the whole media is out to get minorities you crazy retard.

I don't understand why you'd walk that long to the water. Why don't they just.... move closer to the water? It literally makes no sense to live so far from the water - which is the most important thing, surely?

I know it's not the most important issue in this video... but, um, it's cacti. Not cactuses.
dimplexxify 10 months ago 108
@dimplexxify Actually the plural HAS officially changed from cacti, to cactuses. Take it from an Arizona native.
SunsFanGuy 10 months ago 2
@dimplexxify WRONG! Both are technically correct, Cacti is just the more commonly used one. There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying cactuses.
Sparrow476 9 months ago 2
@dimplexxify Wrong! Cactuses is also a perfectly valid plural of cactus!

and this video just confirmed my desire to be a civil engineer to help get rid of this cause of worldsuck that is relatively easily fixed. Thanks :)
it's times like these when I question why we debate about funding for planned parenthood and not about funding to help people who are forced to drink disease-ridden and esentially deadly water.

Hank,
I love your video, but in the spirit of zipping the intellectual fly, I have a grammar comment to make.
The person who helped you overcome the language barrier was your interpreter, not your translator. An interpreter works with spoken or signed language, while a translator works with written language.

MrChickenwingzz 10 months ago
@MrChickenwingzz no one likes america, so they might as well try to help their social status a bit, i mean cmon people here are suffering from what? eating to much while over their their barely getting what they should, and you dont want to help em? ok dont think of it as haiti think of it as people who are suffering, i mean its stupid to let all those people die just because their from this place or that place...
unit9888 10 months ago
@unit9888 although i agree that helping people universally is really good, i must point out that there are people starving in america too. so if you would please stop stereotyping americans (even though i am not one) because they are not all obese food-stuffers, there are plenty of starving people over here as well, and people that do have enough to eat, but don't stuff their faces. also, you used the word 'their' twice in a row, when you should have said 'there they're'.
chimerazz 10 months ago
@chimerazz seems selfish though, overall Americans are much MUCH better off than Haitians, such as the ones in this video who have familiars dying of cholera. As far as I know homeless Americans don't die of cholera and unsafe water, they at least have water. And the way you turn your nose up to the Haitians is a lot like how unit9888 turns his nose up to Americans, generalizing a population over one factor. Not all Haitians are the same, and not all Americans.
helliop 10 months ago
@helliop it's interesting how i never said a single thing about haiti and you just said i turned my nose up at them and generalized them. i did not, in fact, even imply that americans or haitians were all the same. i was merely pointing out that every country has lots of people who are suffering.
chimerazz 10 months ago
@chimerazz okay, fair enough.
helliop 10 months ago
@chimerazz erh im american first off lolz, and even if we are starving its much much worse everywhere else, then theirs people that publicly say well lets help ourselves then others, and then more people who publicly agree, then you understand why everyone hates us D: and trust me, even if their not obese americans eat alot, ive seen people eat in a day what would last my family a week, yet their perfectly healthy, erh... others dot he same and arent so healthy xD
unit9888 10 months ago
@unit9888 okay, for goodness sakes, not all americans eat a lot. that's stupid generalizing. and it's not much worse EVERYWHERE else. we're not like the freaking pot of gold on the planet. australia, countries in europe, and other developed countries all have plenty to eat.
chimerazz 10 months ago
@chimerazz oh for the lvoe of, i know we dont eat that much, but when so many people make more then enough theyd rather live on more, i mean i can argue as to why id rather buy a tv then donate, but im not going to protect people who waste their money on 3 cars just because its more convienient, and its not just eating its money in itself, and at least other countries knwo when to save up money and not just spend it all on whatever, and i know not all americans do it but most do and thats a fact
unit9888 10 months ago
@unit9888 other countries are in debt too. and america is, in fact, the country that spends the most on charity for other countries. stupid.
chimerazz 10 months ago
@chimerazz its odd how the american is trashing america and u who isnt american is defending it but whatever, i know already that they donate alot, but they could donate more all im saying, the only reason most people donate is to put up masks, i means ure their are many legit donations out their but i cant really see america as a whole helping a country that isnt itself, and before you call me stupid how about you live in a america and see for your self...
unit9888 10 months ago
@unit9888 i would defend any country that someone was bashing, no matter what nationality that person was:P it's not nice to just generalize like that! and also untrue. and america DOES help countries in ways that doesn't help itself, there are lots of people in america that care about other places and do their best to help out. and for your information, i DO live in america.
chimerazz 10 months ago
@chimerazz but you said you werent american before, and you also said u were canadian o.o that and im not generalizing it, the only person ive seen who would actually donate wasnt even an american, thats just sad... i mean forget the stuff about putting down minorities when only the minorities are helping others, those who are way better are dont bother... and its not generalzation its the truth...
unit9888 10 months ago
@unit9888 yes, canadians can, in fact, live in america:P and just because you haven't met an american that likes to dontate in your tiny little life, doesn't mean that there aren't lots of them:P
chimerazz 10 months ago
@chimerazz ik canadians can live in america one of my best friends is canadian and he comes here once every so often, but its nto just i havent met any, i havent seen any that could care, i see people on the news saying donate this, then a bunch of regular joes donate yea, but thats about it, they raise something around 200k which is a lot of money dont get me wrong, but the possibilities are so much higher if people actualyl cared theyd only have to help a country out once...
unit9888 10 months ago
@chimerazz
Americans don't care about starving people in there country because they are mostly minorities and the media has brainwashed most citizens that they are the cause of everything wrong in the US.
FuckingEnforcer 10 months ago 2
@FuckingEnforcer erm... no.
chimerazz 10 months ago
@chimerazz
What do you mean no? Its the truth, sorry if it hurts your feelings to the point you can't accept it (but it isn't surprising to see an American deny white privilege). Plus telling from your comments on this video you seem to have a habit of crying about the truth, so continue if it makes you feel better :)
FuckingEnforcer 10 months ago
@FuckingEnforcer Alright, well, i am actually CANADIAN, thank you very much. and the media doesn't brainwash people to hate minorities or whatever other conspiracy theories you come up with. most of my friends are minorities, and we're all happy little geeks that will grow up to be nice lawyers and doctors and whatnot. in fact, from what i've seen from the media, they are promoting diversity. so... no. it's not the truth, and you obviously are very ignorant.
chimerazz 10 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@chimerazz
FuckingEnforcer 10 months ago
@FuckingEnforcer I do watch the news in america. and i LIVE in america. and they are not portrayed that way. my point was not that my 'anecdote' as you say dismisses the truth, i'm just saying that i have never seen minorities treated less than white people in america! and you apparently live in a much more black and white world, thinking the whole media is out to get minorities you crazy retard.
chimerazz 10 months ago
